Kingdom Focus: Rising Seas, El Niño, Climate Pressures and Displaced Communities in Oceania, Asia and the Middle East

Big Question: What happens when an entire community loses its homeland?

The first sign was a coconut tree.

For decades it had stood near the shoreline, marking the place where children gathered after school and fishermen repaired their nets. Generations had taken photographs beneath its branches. Visitors often used it as a landmark when navigating the island.

Then one year, after a season of unusually high tides and powerful storms, the tree disappeared.

The ocean had claimed the ground beneath it.

At first, most people treated it as an isolated incident.

Storms happened.

Coastlines changed.

The sea had always been part of island life.

Yet over the following years, more changes became difficult to ignore.

Saltwater began reaching areas that had previously remained untouched. Wells occasionally became contaminated. Seasonal flooding increased. Several homes located near the coast required relocation. Some agricultural land became less productive as salt affected the soil.

The ocean seemed closer than before.

Much closer.

Among those observing the changes was a school principal named Litia.

She had spent her entire life on the island. Her parents were buried there. Her grandparents were buried there. Every important memory seemed connected to that small piece of land surrounded by water.

Like many residents, she found herself wrestling with difficult questions.

What happens when the place you call home begins to change?

What happens when the future becomes uncertain?

What happens when people begin discussing relocation, not as a possibility, but as a necessity?

One afternoon, while helping students prepare a project about local history, Litia listened as children interviewed elders about life on the island decades earlier.

The stories were fascinating.

Older residents described beaches that no longer existed.

Footpaths now underwater.

Fishing grounds that had changed.

Weather patterns that seemed increasingly unpredictable.

One elderly woman quietly summed up what many people were feeling.

“The island is teaching us that nothing on earth remains exactly the same.”

The comment stayed with Litia.

Several years later, she attended a regional gathering involving leaders from Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. Scientists, policymakers, environmental specialists, aid workers, community leaders, and faith representatives discussed issues affecting vulnerable communities.

The conversations covered rising sea levels, extreme weather events, droughts, flooding, water security, migration, food production, and the effects of recurring climate patterns such as El Niño.

The presentations contained statistics.

Graphs.

Projections.

Models.

Yet what affected Litia most were the stories.

A farmer described losing crops during prolonged drought.

A family recounted rebuilding after repeated flooding.

A community leader explained how changing weather patterns affected local livelihoods.

An island representative spoke about the emotional impact of potentially leaving ancestral land behind.

Suddenly the issue became deeply personal.

Because environmental pressures are never only environmental.

They affect families.

Communities.

Livelihoods.

Identity.

Culture.

History.

One speaker made an observation that resonated throughout the conference.

“When people speak about relocation,” he said, “they often focus on buildings, roads, and infrastructure. But communities are not merely collections of structures. Communities are memories, relationships, traditions, and shared stories.”

The room fell silent.

Because everyone understood.

Moving people is easier than moving a sense of belonging.

As the years passed, Litia continued serving her community. Adaptation projects strengthened infrastructure. Coastal protections were improved. Water systems were upgraded. Educational programs helped residents understand environmental changes and prepare for future challenges.

Hope remained alive.

Not because every problem had been solved.

But because communities were responding with resilience, wisdom, cooperation, and determination.

Scripture repeatedly reminds us that creation belongs to God. Human beings are called to steward it wisely while recognising that our ultimate security is not found in geography, governments, economies, or circumstances. It is found in God Himself.

At the same time, Scripture calls us to care deeply about people facing hardship, displacement, uncertainty, and loss.

Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, millions of people are already experiencing environmental pressures that affect daily life. Some face flooding. Others face drought. Some struggle with water scarcity. Others confront increasingly severe weather events.

The challenges are real.

Yet so is human resilience.

So is innovation.

So is hope.

One evening, while watching children play near the shoreline, Litia reflected on the future.

The ocean was still there.

The challenges remained.

But she also saw something else.

People adapting.

Communities helping one another.

Leaders planning responsibly.

Families refusing to surrender hope.

Perhaps that is one of the greatest lessons of all.

Even when circumstances change, hope does not have to disappear with them.

And even when the ocean comes closer, God remains near.

Understanding the Issue

Many communities throughout Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East are experiencing environmental pressures related to rising sea levels, coastal erosion, flooding, drought, changing rainfall patterns, water scarcity, extreme weather events, and recurring climate cycles such as El Niño. These challenges affect infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, public health, food security, economic stability, and community wellbeing.

For some island and coastal communities, concerns about displacement and relocation are becoming increasingly significant. Environmental pressures can impact not only physical infrastructure but also cultural identity, social cohesion, heritage, and emotional wellbeing.

The Kingdom perspective calls believers to respond with compassion, stewardship, wisdom, resilience, and hope. We are called to care for vulnerable communities while trusting God’s faithfulness amid uncertainty and change.

Reasons to Thank God

• Thank God for communities demonstrating resilience and adaptability.
• Thank God for scientists, planners, engineers, and leaders working toward solutions.
• Thank God for the beauty and provision of creation.
• Thank God for communities supporting one another during difficult seasons.
• Thank God that He remains our refuge and strength in every circumstance.

Prayer

Father, we pray for communities throughout Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East facing rising seas, flooding, drought, environmental pressures, water scarcity, and climate-related challenges. Strengthen families, leaders, and communities as they navigate uncertainty and change.

Grant wisdom to governments, scientists, planners, engineers, aid organisations, and community leaders working to protect vulnerable populations. Provide resources, innovation, cooperation, and resilience. Comfort those experiencing loss and strengthen those preparing for difficult decisions.

May Your Kingdom come through compassion, stewardship, wisdom, and hope. Help us care for one another faithfully and trust Your presence even when circumstances change. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Today I choose hope over fear and stewardship over indifference. I trust that God remains faithful through every season of change. By His grace, I will encourage resilience, support vulnerable communities, and help build a future marked by wisdom, compassion, and hope.
