Big Question: What stories are shaping the soul of nations?

The song began in a place most people would never visit.

It was written in a small room overlooking a crowded street in a city where cultures, languages, traditions, and generations constantly intersected. The songwriter, a young musician named Kai, had no idea that the melody he was composing would eventually travel thousands of kilometres beyond the walls of his apartment.

At the time, he was simply trying to express something he could not easily explain.

Like many artists, he was attempting to capture a feeling.

A question.

A longing.

A story.

When the song was finally released, its success surprised everyone.

Within weeks, people across multiple countries were listening to it. Videos appeared online featuring dancers, musicians, and content creators interpreting the music in different ways. The melody crossed borders, languages, and cultures. Some listeners connected with the lyrics. Others connected with the emotion behind them.

What fascinated Kai most was not the popularity of the song.

It was the influence.

People he had never met were repeating words he had written.

Communities he had never visited were embracing ideas he had expressed.

Entire audiences were being shaped by something that had once existed only in his imagination.

The experience forced him to confront a reality he had never fully considered before.

Stories are powerful.

Music is powerful.

Art is powerful.

Culture is powerful.

Several years later, Kai was invited to speak at a gathering of artists, filmmakers, writers, musicians, educators, and cultural leaders from across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. During one discussion, participants were asked a simple question.

“What is the purpose of art?”

The answers varied.

Some spoke about beauty.

Others spoke about creativity.

Some emphasised entertainment.

Others highlighted education, reflection, and social change.

Then an elderly filmmaker stood and addressed the room.

“Every culture is built upon stories,” he said.

The room became quiet.

“The stories people celebrate become the values they admire. The values they admire become the choices they make. The choices they make become the culture they create.”

The statement stayed with Kai long after the conference ended.

As his career progressed, he travelled extensively throughout the region. He observed how stories influenced entire generations.

Films shaped expectations.

Music influenced identity.

Literature inspired imagination.

Digital content affected behaviour.

Art reflected hopes, fears, dreams, struggles, and aspirations.

Some stories encouraged courage, sacrifice, integrity, compassion, and hope.

Others normalised selfishness, greed, violence, division, and despair.

The difference mattered.

One afternoon, while visiting a remote island community, Kai attended a cultural festival celebrating traditional songs, dances, and storytelling. Elders shared narratives passed down through generations. Children listened attentively as histories, values, and lessons were communicated through performance and song.

Watching the event unfold, Kai realised something profound.

Human beings have always been storytellers.

Long before social media.

Long before streaming platforms.

Long before cinema, television, or radio.

Stories carried wisdom from one generation to another.

Stories shaped identity.

Stories preserved culture.

Stories influenced behaviour.

Stories helped people understand who they were and where they belonged.

Scripture itself reveals the power of story. Jesus frequently taught through parables. The Bible communicates truth through narratives, poetry, songs, history, prophecy, and testimony. God understands the power of imagination because He created it.

The question, therefore, is not whether stories shape society.

They always have.

The real question is which stories are shaping society.

Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, artists, musicians, writers, filmmakers, performers, designers, storytellers, and creators influence millions of people every day. Through culture they help define what communities celebrate, reject, aspire to become, and pass on to future generations.

The influence is enormous.

So is the responsibility.

Years after writing the song that first crossed oceans, Kai was asked what he hoped people would remember about his work.

He thought carefully before answering.

“I hope the stories I tell help people become better versions of themselves.”

Perhaps that is one of the highest callings of art.

Not merely to entertain.

But to illuminate.

Not merely to attract attention.

But to inspire transformation.

Because the stories shaping the soul of nations will eventually shape their future as well.

Arts and culture influence how people understand themselves, their communities, and the world around them. Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, music, literature, film, theatre, visual arts, digital media, design, and storytelling play significant roles in shaping identity, values, aspirations, and public conversations.

Creative industries contribute economically, socially, and culturally. They preserve heritage, celebrate diversity, inspire innovation, and provide platforms for important conversations. At the same time, cultural content can either strengthen or weaken values, influence behaviour positively or negatively, and shape societal norms.

The Kingdom perspective views creativity as a gift from God. Artists and creators possess unique opportunities to communicate truth, beauty, justice, hope, wisdom, and human dignity. Creative expression can become a powerful tool for transformation when guided by godly values.

Reasons to Thank God

• Thank God for creativity, imagination, and artistic expression.
• Thank God for cultural diversity across nations and peoples.
• Thank God for artists, musicians, writers, filmmakers, and storytellers.
• Thank God for creative works that inspire hope, truth, and beauty.
• Thank God for opportunities to communicate the Gospel through creativity.

Prayer

Father, we pray for artists, musicians, writers, filmmakers, performers, designers, storytellers, and cultural leaders across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. Fill them with wisdom, creativity, integrity, and vision. Help them create works that reflect truth, beauty, hope, dignity, and purpose.

Raise up creative voices that inspire courage, compassion, justice, and faith. Protect societies from cultural influences that promote deception, hopelessness, division, and destruction. May creativity become a channel through which Your light shines into communities, cultures, and nations.

May Your Kingdom come through stories that heal, songs that inspire, and creative works that point people toward truth. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Declaration

Today I choose to value creativity as a gift from God. I will allow my mind, imagination, and influence to be shaped by truth, beauty, and wisdom. By God’s grace, I will use my gifts to inspire hope, encourage others, and contribute positively to the culture around me.
