Big Question: Who is shaping the stories that shape our lives?

The island was so small that many maps did not include it.

Located hundreds of kilometres from the nearest major city, it sat quietly in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Life moved at a slower pace there. Families knew one another. Fishing boats dotted the shoreline each morning. Children walked to school beneath palm trees. Visitors arrived occasionally, but not often enough to disturb the rhythm of daily life.

For generations, most news arrived slowly.

People learned about world events days or even weeks after they happened. Information travelled through visiting ships, occasional newspapers, radio broadcasts, and conversations with travellers passing through.

Then technology changed everything.

Within a few years, internet access reached the island. Smartphones became common. Social media connected residents to people and events occurring thousands of kilometres away. Suddenly, global conversations entered homes that had once been largely isolated from them.

Among those fascinated by the change was a secondary school teacher named Elena.

At first, she celebrated the transformation. Students could access educational resources previously unavailable. Families stayed connected with relatives living abroad. Local businesses reached new customers. Information that once required weeks to obtain became available instantly.

The opportunities seemed endless.

Yet over time, Elena began noticing something unexpected.

The technology delivering information was also shaping perception.

Students increasingly repeated opinions they had never personally examined. Rumours spread rapidly. False stories often travelled farther than true ones. Online arguments created divisions within communities that had previously enjoyed strong relationships. Influencers from distant countries affected local attitudes, values, aspirations, and behaviours.

One afternoon, while discussing current events with her students, Elena asked a simple question.

“How do you know whether something is true?”

The classroom became unusually quiet.

Several students offered answers.

“Because everyone is sharing it.”

“Because it appeared on a popular channel.”

“Because someone important said it.”

Elena listened carefully.

Then she realised that many people, not just students, relied upon similar assumptions.

The challenge facing society was no longer a lack of information.

The challenge was discernment.

Several months later, Elena attended a communications conference that brought together journalists, educators, media professionals, church leaders, technology specialists, and community representatives from across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East.

During one session, a veteran broadcaster shared a story from the early days of radio.

“When radio first arrived in many remote communities,” he explained, “people marvelled at the ability of a voice to travel across mountains, deserts, forests, and oceans. Entire villages would gather around a single receiver to hear news from distant places.”

He paused before continuing.

“Today we have far more powerful tools. Yet the fundamental question remains the same. What kind of voices are we allowing into our lives?”

The statement resonated deeply with Elena.

Because media is never merely about technology.

It is about influence.

Stories shape beliefs.

Beliefs shape decisions.

Decisions shape cultures.

Cultures shape nations.

As her work continued, Elena observed both the remarkable potential and significant risks associated with modern communication.

She witnessed social media helping families reconnect across continents. She saw digital platforms provide educational opportunities to remote communities. She watched journalists expose injustice and bring attention to important issues. She observed ministries sharing the Gospel with audiences that previous generations could never have reached.

At the same time, she saw misinformation create confusion. She witnessed online hostility damage relationships. She observed fear, outrage, and division being amplified because controversy attracted attention.

The same tools capable of building communities could also fracture them.

One evening, while walking along the shoreline near her home, Elena reflected upon a verse she had recently read.

Jesus described His followers as light.

Light does not compete with darkness by shouting louder.

Light simply shines.

The thought transformed how she viewed communication.

Perhaps the goal was not merely to consume information.

Perhaps the goal was to become a source of truth, wisdom, encouragement, and hope.

Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, billions of messages travel through television networks, radio stations, websites, podcasts, newspapers, messaging platforms, and social media feeds every day. Some inform. Some inspire. Some educate. Some manipulate. Some unite. Some divide.

The influence of media has never been greater.

Nor has the responsibility.

The question facing every generation is not simply what messages are being broadcast.

The deeper question is who is shaping the stories that shape our lives.

And whether those stories are leading people closer to truth, wisdom, and hope.

Understanding the Issue

Media and communication shape public understanding, cultural values, political discussions, social attitudes, and personal beliefs. Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, technological advances have dramatically increased access to information, education, entertainment, and global conversations.

These developments have created extraordinary opportunities for learning, connection, collaboration, and ministry. At the same time, misinformation, manipulation, sensationalism, digital addiction, online hostility, and information overload present significant challenges. The ability to communicate widely carries both influence and responsibility.

The Kingdom of God calls believers to become people of truth, wisdom, discernment, and grace. Whether consuming information or creating it, followers of Christ are called to use communication as a tool for encouragement, truth, justice, and hope.

Reasons to Thank God

• Thank God for communication technologies that connect people across great distances.
• Thank God for journalists, educators, broadcasters, and communicators serving with integrity.
• Thank God for media platforms that spread truth, education, and encouragement.
• Thank God for opportunities to share the Gospel through modern communication tools.
• Thank God that His truth remains constant in every generation.

Prayer

Father, we pray for media professionals, journalists, broadcasters, content creators, educators, communicators, and technology leaders across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. Grant wisdom, integrity, discernment, and courage. Help them communicate truth responsibly and resist the temptation to spread fear, division, or misinformation.

Raise up voices that encourage wisdom, justice, peace, and hope. Help communities navigate the challenges of the digital age with discernment and maturity. May communication technologies become tools that strengthen relationships, expand knowledge, and advance Your purposes.

May Your Kingdom come through words that heal, stories that inspire, and messages that point people toward truth. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Today I choose truth over deception and wisdom over noise. I will use my words, influence, and communication to build others up, encourage hope, and reflect the character of Christ. By God’s grace, I will become a voice that points people toward truth.
