Big Question: What is success worth if it costs your soul?

By every visible measure, Victor Rahman was a success.

His company operated in several countries. Thousands of people depended directly or indirectly on the business he had built. Industry magazines frequently featured his achievements. Government officials invited him to economic forums. Young entrepreneurs studied his journey and hoped to follow a similar path.

From the outside, his story looked inspiring.

And in many ways, it was.

He had grown up in a modest household where opportunities were limited. His parents worked hard to provide for their family. From a young age, Victor learned the value of discipline, sacrifice, and persistence. While others saw obstacles, he often saw possibilities.

Over the years, he built businesses, took risks, overcame setbacks, and gradually accumulated wealth. There were seasons when success seemed unlikely. Economic downturns threatened his ventures. Competitors challenged his position. Unexpected crises tested his resolve. Yet somehow he continued moving forward.

People admired his determination.

What they could not see were the questions that increasingly occupied his thoughts.

Those questions became particularly difficult after the death of his father.

Standing beside the grave, Victor found himself reflecting on the contrast between his father’s life and his own. His father had never been wealthy. He had never owned multiple companies. He had never appeared in newspapers or spoken at conferences.

Yet as friends, neighbours, former colleagues, and family members shared stories, Victor noticed something remarkable.

Nobody talked about what his father owned.

They talked about who he was.

They remembered his generosity.

His honesty.

His kindness.

His willingness to help people without expecting anything in return.

As the funeral ended, one elderly neighbour approached Victor.

“Your father was one of the richest men I ever knew,” he said.

Victor almost corrected him.

But the man continued.

“Not because of what he possessed. Because of what he gave.”

The statement stayed with him.

Months later, Victor faced one of the most important decisions of his career.

A major contract had become available. Securing it would significantly expand the company’s influence across several regions. Advisors described it as a once-in-a-generation opportunity.

There was only one problem.

The process was not entirely honest.

No one used the word corruption.

People rarely do.

Instead they used softer language.

“Facilitation.”

“Relationship management.”

“Necessary adjustments.”

The meaning remained the same.

If Victor was willing to compromise certain principles, the opportunity could become reality.

Several advisors urged him to proceed.

“Everyone does it.”

“You’re only protecting the company.”

“Think about the jobs this will create.”

“Don’t let idealism get in the way of success.”

The arguments sounded persuasive.

For several days, Victor wrestled with the decision.

One evening, unable to sleep, he found himself reviewing old family photographs. Among them was a picture of his father standing beside a small market stall many years earlier. The business was modest. The future uncertain. Yet the expression on his father’s face reflected something Victor suddenly realised he envied.

Peace.

Not comfort.

Not wealth.

Peace.

The following morning, Victor declined the deal.

Several colleagues considered the decision foolish.

Some questioned his judgment.

Others predicted long-term consequences.

Perhaps they were right.

There were consequences.

Growth slowed.

Opportunities were lost.

Competitors moved ahead.

Yet something else happened as well.

Employees noticed.

Partners noticed.

Customers noticed.

Trust deepened.

Years later, many people could not remember the contract he rejected.

They remembered the reputation he protected.

During a leadership conference near the end of his career, a young entrepreneur asked him what he considered his greatest business decision.

The audience expected him to mention a successful acquisition, expansion strategy, or investment.

Instead he spoke about the opportunity he refused.

“Business,” he explained, “is ultimately a test of stewardship. Profit matters. Growth matters. Innovation matters. But there are some things more valuable than all of them combined.”

He paused before continuing.

“Once you lose your integrity, everything else becomes more expensive.”

The room became silent.

Because everyone understood what he meant.

Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, businesses play a vital role in creating jobs, generating wealth, developing innovation, and strengthening communities. Entrepreneurs, investors, employers, and workers contribute enormously to the flourishing of nations.

Yet every generation eventually faces the same question.

How much are we willing to sacrifice in pursuit of success?

Scripture never condemns productive work, wise stewardship, or responsible prosperity. Instead, it repeatedly challenges people to ensure that success remains a servant rather than a master. Wealth is a tool. Influence is a stewardship. Business is an opportunity to serve.

The question remains.

Understanding the Issue

Business and commerce shape the lives of billions of people. Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, entrepreneurs, employers, employees, investors, and innovators contribute significantly to economic growth and human development. Ethical business practices build trust, create opportunity, strengthen communities, and support long-term prosperity.

At the same time, pressures related to competition, profit, corruption, short-term gains, and personal ambition can tempt individuals and organisations to compromise their values. Sustainable success requires more than financial performance. It requires integrity, accountability, stewardship, transparency, and a commitment to serving people well.

Reasons to Thank God

• Thank God for ethical business leaders serving with integrity.
• Thank God for entrepreneurs creating jobs and opportunities.
• Thank God for innovation that improves lives and strengthens communities.
• Thank God for organisations that prioritise people alongside profit.
• Thank God for His provision, wisdom, and guidance in every sphere of work.

Prayer

Father, we pray for business leaders, entrepreneurs, employers, employees, investors, and professionals across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. Grant wisdom, integrity, courage, and discernment. Help people pursue success without compromising truth, justice, or righteousness.

Protect organisations from corruption, greed, dishonesty, and exploitation. Raise up leaders who create opportunity, steward resources wisely, and use influence for the benefit of others. May businesses become places where dignity, innovation, service, and ethical leadership flourish.

May Your Kingdom come in boardrooms, factories, farms, offices, shops, marketplaces, and enterprises of every kind. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Declaration

Today I choose integrity over compromise and stewardship over selfish ambition. I will pursue excellence without sacrificing character. By God’s grace, I will use every opportunity, resource, and influence entrusted to me for His glory and the good of others.
