The question arrived unexpectedly.
Pastor Benjamin had spoken to thousands of people over the course of his ministry. He had preached in churches, conference halls, schools, villages, and community gatherings. He had answered difficult theological questions, mediated family disputes, and sat with leaders wrestling over decisions that affected entire communities. Yet the question that stayed with him for years came not from a scholar, pastor, politician, or church elder.
It came from a ten-year-old girl sitting in the front row of a small gathering.
Her name was Hannah.
The church met in a modest building on the edge of a growing city. Around it stood apartment complexes, shopping centres, schools, internet cafés, and construction sites. The city seemed to expand every month. New technology arrived constantly. Young people moved there from rural communities seeking education, employment, and opportunity. The future appeared to be arriving faster than anyone could process.
Benjamin had just completed a teaching session on faith.
When he finished, he invited questions.
Several adults asked predictable things. One wanted clarification about prayer. Another asked about church leadership. A third raised a question concerning end-times prophecy.
Then Hannah raised her hand.
“Pastor, why does God seem closer to people in the Bible than He does to people now?”
The room became quiet.
Benjamin smiled and gave an answer that seemed reasonable at the time. He spoke about faith, Scripture, prayer, and the presence of the Holy Spirit. Hannah listened respectfully.
Then she asked another question.
“If God still speaks, why do so many Christians seem confused about what He wants them to do?”
A few adults laughed softly.
Benjamin did not.
Something about the question unsettled him.
Not because it was disrespectful. Quite the opposite. It was honest.
Over the following weeks, Hannah continued asking questions.
Why do people pray for peace and still go to war?
Why do some adults say Jesus is important but never talk about Him at home?
Why are so many young people leaving church?
Why do people spend more time on their phones than with their families?
Why do children learn mathematics, science, technology, and history, but sometimes know very little about God?
Benjamin discovered that answering children required a different kind of honesty. Adults often learned how to hide behind language, traditions, and explanations. Children frequently walked around those defences and went directly to the heart of the matter.
Several months later, Benjamin attended a regional gathering involving church leaders from multiple countries across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. The conference addressed many important subjects. Speakers discussed economic pressures, social change, migration, technology, leadership development, discipleship strategies, and church growth.
During one session, participants were asked to identify the greatest challenge facing the Church over the next twenty years.
Responses varied.
Some mentioned political instability.
Others pointed to secularism.
Some highlighted persecution.
Others focused on poverty, conflict, technology, artificial intelligence, misinformation, or cultural change.
All of them were important.
Yet Benjamin found himself thinking about Hannah.
Eventually he stood and spoke.
“What if our greatest challenge is not what is happening outside the Church, but what is not happening inside the next generation?”
The room grew quiet.
Benjamin continued.
“What if many of our children know church activities but do not know how to hear God’s voice? What if they know Bible stories but have never been taught how to obey Scripture? What if they know Christian vocabulary but have never experienced disciple-making relationships? What if they inherit our programs without inheriting our faith?”
The conversation that followed lasted nearly two hours.
Leaders shared stories from different nations.
Some described young people overwhelmed by academic pressure.
Others spoke about children navigating social media environments that previous generations never faced.
Some described families struggling to spend meaningful time together.
Others spoke about identity confusion, loneliness, anxiety, addiction, and spiritual uncertainty.
Yet alongside the challenges came remarkable stories of hope.
A youth movement emerging in a Pacific island nation.
Students gathering for prayer before classes.
Teenagers leading Bible studies among their friends.
Families rediscovering the importance of praying together.
Young believers using technology not merely for entertainment but for evangelism, discipleship, and encouragement.
The more Benjamin listened, the more he realised something important.
The next generation was not merely the future of the Church.
They were part of the Church now.
Too often adults spoke about young people as though they were waiting to become important someday. Yet throughout Scripture, God repeatedly called and used young people.
Samuel heard God’s voice as a child.
David was a young shepherd when God chose him.
Josiah led reform while still young.
Mary carried the greatest assignment in human history while still a young woman.
Timothy was instructed not to let others despise his youth.
God has never waited for people to become older before He begins using them.
Several weeks after returning home, Benjamin saw Hannah again.
She was helping arrange chairs before a gathering.
When she noticed him, she smiled.
“Pastor, can I ask another question?”
Benjamin laughed.
“Of course.”
Hannah thought for a moment.
“Do adults realise children are listening even when they are not teaching?”
Benjamin stood silently for several seconds.
Then he smiled.
It was another question he would never forget.
And perhaps it is one we should not forget either.
The next generation is watching.
Listening.
Learning.
And asking questions that deserve honest answers.
The question is whether we are prepared to answer them.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7
Psalm 78:4-7
1 Timothy 4:12
Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, young people are growing up in rapidly changing environments shaped by technology, education, urbanisation, migration, media influence, and cultural transformation. Many face increasing pressure related to identity, achievement, relationships, mental health, and future uncertainty. While access to information has never been greater, spiritual wisdom often remains scarce.
The next generation represents one of the greatest opportunities for Kingdom transformation. Children and young people are not merely future leaders. They are present disciples, evangelists, worshippers, prayer warriors, and change agents whom God desires to use today.
Identify one child, teenager, or young adult you can intentionally encourage, mentor, disciple, or pray for during the coming month. Ask God to help you become part of the spiritual formation of the next generation.
My Action Step: __________________________
Father, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, we lift before You the children, teenagers, and young adults of Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. Draw them to Yourself. Reveal Your love, truth, purpose, and calling to this generation. Protect them from deception, hopelessness, addiction, confusion, and destructive influences.
Raise up parents, teachers, pastors, mentors, and disciple-makers who will faithfully invest in young lives. Let homes become places of prayer. Let schools become places where truth is pursued. Let churches become environments where young people encounter Jesus personally and grow as disciples.
Lord, awaken a generation that loves Your Word, hears Your voice, obeys Your commands, and carries the Gospel to the nations. Let Your Kingdom come among the next generation. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Today I commit to investing in the next generation. I will pray, encourage, mentor, and model faithful discipleship. By God’s grace, I will help raise disciples who know Christ, follow His Word, and impact their generation for His glory.
