Big Question: Who pays when creation is neglected?

When Arun was a child, the river was the heart of the town.

Every important memory seemed connected to it.

Children learned to swim there. Fishermen launched their boats before sunrise. Families gathered along the banks during festivals. Farmers depended on its waters to nourish their crops. Birds nested among the trees lining its edges. The river provided food, livelihoods, beauty, and identity.

For generations, people spoke of it with affection.

It was more than a river.

It was part of who they were.

Years later, after completing his studies in environmental science, Arun returned home.

The first thing he noticed was the smell.

Before he even reached the riverbank, he knew something had changed.

The water that had once flowed clear now carried a dull, murky appearance. Plastic waste collected along the shoreline. Fish populations had declined significantly. Several species of birds were no longer common. Residents spoke about recurring health problems that previous generations rarely experienced.

The river was still there.

But it was not the same river.

As Arun began investigating, he discovered that no single event had caused the decline.

The damage had accumulated slowly.

Year after year.

Decision after decision.

Small compromises had gradually produced large consequences.

Waste disposal practices changed as the town expanded. Industrial activity increased. Population growth placed additional pressure on infrastructure. Environmental regulations existed but were not always enforced. Many people assumed someone else would address the problem.

Instead, the problem grew.

One afternoon, while speaking with an elderly fisherman who had spent most of his life on the river, Arun asked when things began to change.

The old man stared across the water for several moments before answering.

“The river did not change overnight,” he said quietly.

“People simply stopped paying attention.”

The answer stayed with Arun.

Over the following years, his work took him throughout Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. He visited coastal communities affected by plastic pollution. He studied regions struggling with contaminated water supplies. He met families living near heavily polluted industrial areas. He observed how environmental degradation affected agriculture, fisheries, tourism, public health, and local economies.

Everywhere he travelled, he encountered a similar pattern.

Environmental problems rarely remained environmental problems.

They eventually became health problems.

Economic problems.

Social problems.

Human problems.

In one city, air pollution contributed to rising respiratory illnesses. In another region, contaminated water increased the risk of disease. Elsewhere, waste management challenges affected both tourism and community wellbeing. Communities that depended upon healthy ecosystems found themselves struggling as environmental conditions deteriorated.

The consequences extended far beyond nature itself.

People paid the price.

Especially the most vulnerable.

One evening, during a regional environmental summit, a public health specialist presented research linking environmental quality and human wellbeing.

After reviewing extensive data, she concluded with a statement that captured the attention of the entire room.

“The environment is not something separate from human life,” she said. “The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and the ecosystems that support them are part of the same story.”

The room remained silent.

Because everyone understood.

Human flourishing and environmental stewardship are deeply connected.

Scripture presents creation as something entrusted to humanity. From the beginning, people were called to cultivate, care for, and steward the world God created. Stewardship was never merely about extracting value. It was also about preserving, protecting, and passing on what had been entrusted to future generations.

As Arun continued his work, he became increasingly convinced that environmental stewardship was not simply a scientific issue.

It was a moral issue.

A leadership issue.

A community issue.

A spiritual issue.

Because stewardship ultimately reflects how people view responsibility.

Years after returning home, Arun stood once again beside the river of his childhood. Restoration efforts had begun producing results. Community groups organised clean-up initiatives. Schools educated students about stewardship. Businesses adopted more sustainable practices. Local leaders invested in environmental improvements.

The river was recovering.

Slowly.

Patiently.

One decision at a time.

Watching the water flow past, Arun realised something important.

Neglect accumulates.

But stewardship does too.

The question facing every generation is whether it will leave creation healthier or weaker than it found it.

Because when creation is neglected, someone eventually pays the price.

And when stewardship is embraced, entire communities can flourish.

Understanding the Issue

Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, environmental challenges include pollution, waste management, water contamination, air quality concerns, habitat loss, plastic pollution, industrial emissions, and ecosystem degradation. These issues affect not only the environment but also public health, economic productivity, food security, tourism, and quality of life.

Environmental degradation often impacts vulnerable communities most severely. Poor air quality can contribute to respiratory illnesses. Contaminated water can increase disease risks. Ecosystem decline can affect agriculture, fisheries, and livelihoods. Effective stewardship therefore benefits both creation and human wellbeing.

The Kingdom perspective recognises creation as God’s handiwork. Humanity is called to steward, protect, and responsibly manage the resources entrusted to us. Caring for creation reflects gratitude, responsibility, and love for both God and neighbour.

• Thank God for the beauty and abundance of creation.
• Thank God for rivers, forests, oceans, farmland, and ecosystems that sustain life.
• Thank God for scientists, conservationists, educators, and community leaders working toward environmental solutions.
• Thank God for communities embracing stewardship and restoration.
• Thank God for His provision through the natural world.

Father, we thank You for the beauty, abundance, and provision found throughout Your creation. We pray for Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East as communities address environmental challenges affecting health, livelihoods, and future generations. Grant wisdom to leaders, businesses, scientists, educators, and citizens as they seek sustainable solutions.

Help us become faithful stewards of the resources You have entrusted to humanity. Protect communities from the harmful effects of pollution and environmental degradation. Inspire innovation, responsibility, cooperation, and long-term thinking that promotes both human flourishing and environmental health.

May Your Kingdom come through wise stewardship, restoration, and care for creation. Help us leave a healthier world for those who come after us. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Today I choose stewardship over neglect and responsibility over indifference. I recognise that creation belongs to God and has been entrusted to our care. By His grace, I will help protect, preserve, and restore the world around me for the benefit of others and future generations.
