Kingdom Focus: Migration, Refugees and Displaced Peoples in Oceania, Asia and the Middle East

Big Question: What would you carry if you had to leave everything behind?

The announcement came just after sunrise.

No one expected it to happen so quickly.

For months, rumours had circulated throughout the town. Some spoke of growing tensions in nearby regions. Others worried about worsening economic conditions. A few families had already left quietly, seeking opportunities elsewhere. Most people, however, remained convinced that life would continue as it always had.

Then everything changed.

By mid-morning, vehicles filled the streets. Families hurriedly packed belongings. Shops closed. Conversations became urgent. Neighbours gathered outside homes trying to understand what was happening. Some carried suitcases. Others carried boxes. A few carried nothing at all.

Among them was a young mother named Miriam.

Standing in the doorway of her small home, she stared at the rooms that had shaped so much of her life. The kitchen where countless meals had been prepared. The wall marked with the heights of her children as they grew. The table where birthdays had been celebrated. The garden planted by her husband years earlier.

Suddenly she was faced with an impossible question.

What do you take when you cannot take everything?

She walked slowly through the house. Family photographs. Important documents. Clothing. Children’s toys. Medicines. Blankets. Keepsakes accumulated over years. Each item carried memories. Each item seemed important.

Yet space was limited.

Time was limited.

Choices had to be made.

As she packed, her youngest daughter asked a question she would never forget.

“When are we coming back?”

Miriam opened her mouth to answer.

No words came.

Because she did not know.

The journey that followed was difficult.

What began as a temporary relocation gradually stretched into months. Then years. The family moved through unfamiliar cities, temporary accommodations, and new communities. Languages changed. Customs changed. Schools changed. Friendships changed.

Many people were kind.

Some welcomed them generously.

Others viewed them with suspicion.

For the first time in her life, Miriam experienced what it meant to feel like a stranger.

Simple tasks became complicated. Forms needed completing. Jobs needed finding. Children needed enrolling in schools. Cultural misunderstandings created awkward moments. Every day seemed to require learning something new.

What surprised her most was not the practical challenges.

It was the grief.

People often think migration is only about moving from one place to another. Yet those who have experienced it know it is also about loss. Loss of familiarity. Loss of routines. Loss of relationships. Loss of identity. Loss of belonging.

Even positive migration can carry these emotions.

A student leaving home for university.

A family relocating for work.

A professional pursuing opportunities abroad.

A community displaced by conflict, disaster, rising sea levels, or economic hardship.

Every journey away from home carries invisible costs.

Several years later, Miriam attended a community gathering organised for families who had experienced displacement. During the event, participants were invited to share their stories.

One elderly man described leaving the village where generations of his family had lived.

A young professional spoke about migrating to another country for employment.

A fisherman described how environmental changes had affected his island community.

A refugee recounted fleeing violence with only a backpack and a few possessions.

The stories differed dramatically.

Yet a common thread connected them all.

Every person longed for a place to belong.

Every person wanted safety.

Every person wanted dignity.

Every person wanted hope.

As the meeting ended, an elderly pastor stood and addressed the group.

“One of the great themes of Scripture,” he said, “is that God cares deeply about strangers, foreigners, exiles, and travellers. Abraham left his homeland. Joseph lived in a foreign land. Ruth crossed borders. Israel experienced exile. Even Jesus spent part of His childhood as a refugee in Egypt.”

The room became quiet.

“Perhaps,” he continued, “God understands displacement better than we realise.”

Those words remained with Miriam long after the gathering ended.

Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, millions of people are currently on the move. Some migrate voluntarily in search of opportunity. Others relocate because of economic necessity. Some flee conflict. Others respond to natural disasters, environmental pressures, rising sea levels, political instability, persecution, or changing circumstances.

Behind every statistic is a story.

A family.

A dream.

A loss.

A hope for something better.

The question remains.

Understanding the Issue

Migration is one of the defining realities of the modern world. Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, millions relocate each year for employment, education, family reunification, safety, or survival. Some move voluntarily while others are displaced by conflict, persecution, natural disasters, environmental change, economic hardship, or political instability.

While migration often creates opportunities, it can also create challenges. Families become separated. Communities experience rapid change. New arrivals may struggle with language, employment, housing, education, legal systems, and social integration. At the same time, migrants frequently contribute significantly to the economic, cultural, and social development of the communities that receive them.

Scripture consistently calls God’s people to treat strangers with dignity, compassion, justice, and hospitality. The Church has a unique opportunity to demonstrate God’s love by welcoming, supporting, and serving those navigating unfamiliar journeys.

Reasons to Thank God

• Thank God for organisations and individuals serving migrants and refugees.
• Thank God for communities that welcome newcomers with compassion.
• Thank God for opportunities created through cultural exchange and cooperation.
• Thank God for stories of resilience, courage, and new beginnings.
• Thank God that He remains present with people wherever they journey.

Prayer

Father, we pray for migrants, refugees, displaced families, international students, foreign workers, and all those who have been forced or required to leave familiar places behind. Comfort those carrying grief, uncertainty, fear, and loss. Provide safety, opportunity, community, and hope.

Strengthen governments, churches, humanitarian organisations, and communities responding to migration challenges. Help people see one another not as statistics but as human beings created in Your image. Raise up compassionate leaders and communities that reflect Your heart for strangers, travellers, and those seeking refuge.

May Your Kingdom come through hospitality, justice, dignity, and love. Let displaced people find belonging, purpose, and new beginnings. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Declaration

Today I choose compassion over indifference and hospitality over exclusion. I will see people through God’s eyes and welcome those who are navigating unfamiliar journeys. By His grace, I will become a source of hope, encouragement, and belonging.
