Kingdom Focus: Persecution and Courage in Oceania, Asia and the Middle East

Big Question: Would your faith survive if following Christ cost you everything?

The song began softly.

At first, only Miriam heard it. She had been sitting near the back of the small room, close enough to the door to notice every movement outside and far enough from the window to remain hidden if anyone passed by. The gathering had already lasted longer than usual, and everyone knew it was time to leave. In their town, believers had learned not to stay in one place too long. They arrived separately, left separately, and rarely used the same house twice in the same month.

The room was ordinary in every visible way. A wooden table stood near the wall. A woven mat covered part of the floor. Several cups of tea had gone cold beside a plate of bread that no one had finished. If a neighbour had entered suddenly, they might have thought it was nothing more than a family visit. That was how it had to be. In some places faith could be announced with bells, choirs, banners, microphones, and open doors. In this town, faith had learned to whisper.

There were twelve of them that night. A widow who sold vegetables in the market. A teacher from the government school. A young father whose brother had warned him never to attend again. Two students who came only after dark. An elderly man who still carried scars from an interrogation years before. Miriam sat with her hands folded tightly in her lap, listening as Pastor Elias read from a small Bible whose cover had been repaired so many times that it no longer looked like a Bible at all.

He read from the book of Acts. His voice was low, but steady. The believers leaned forward so they would not miss a word. Outside, the town continued its evening rhythm. Motorbikes passed along the road. Someone shouted in the distance. A baby cried in a neighbouring house. Nothing about the night appeared unusual, yet everyone in the room understood that ordinary nights could change without warning.

Miriam had not grown up among Christians. Her family was respected in the community and deeply loyal to the faith of their ancestors. As a child, she had learned the prayers, ceremonies, festivals, and expectations that shaped life around her. She never considered questioning them. To belong was to follow. To follow was to be safe. To be safe was to avoid bringing shame upon the family.

Then she met Laila.

Laila was a nurse at the clinic where Miriam had gone after a long illness left her weak for several weeks. She was gentle, unusually patient, and never seemed hurried even when the waiting room was full. Over time, Miriam noticed something different about her. It was not merely kindness. Many people could be kind when others were watching. Laila carried peace in a way Miriam could not explain. One afternoon, after a difficult appointment, Miriam asked her why she seemed so calm.

Laila hesitated before answering. In their town, careless words could travel quickly. A misplaced sentence could cost a job, a home, or worse. But something in Miriam’s face must have persuaded her, because she spoke quietly about Jesus.

That conversation became the beginning of everything.

At first Miriam only listened. She asked questions carefully, almost defensively, as though trying to prove that nothing she heard could disturb the world she had always known. But the more she listened, the more unsettled she became. The stories of Jesus did not sound like religious arguments. They sounded like life. He touched the untouchable. He forgave sinners. He welcomed the ashamed. He saw women others ignored. He spoke of a Father who searched for the lost and rejoiced when one came home.

Months passed before Miriam asked to read the Scriptures for herself. Laila brought her a small Gospel of Luke wrapped in cloth and warned her to keep it hidden. Miriam read at night after everyone slept. Sometimes she would stop after only a few verses because the words seemed too alive to continue reading casually. She read about the prodigal son and wept silently. She read about the woman who touched the hem of Jesus’ garment and felt as though her own hidden fears had been exposed. She read about the cross and could not sleep afterward.

When she finally decided to follow Christ, she told no one except Laila.

For several months her faith lived quietly inside her. She prayed silently while preparing meals. She whispered Scripture while walking to the market. She attended secret gatherings only when she could do so without raising suspicion. Yet secrecy did not remove the cost. It only delayed it.

Her younger brother found the Gospel of Luke first.

He did not confront her immediately. Instead, he took it to their father. By evening, the entire household knew. The questions began calmly, then grew sharper. Who gave this to you? How long have you been reading it? Have you abandoned your people? Do you understand what this will do to our family? Miriam tried to answer gently, but every word seemed to deepen the wound. Her mother wept as though someone had died. Her father did not speak to her for three days.

After that, life in the house changed. Meals became silent. Relatives stopped visiting when she was present. Her brother refused to walk beside her in public. A marriage proposal that had once seemed certain disappeared without explanation. At the market, conversations ended when she approached. No official announcement had been made, yet everyone seemed to know.

Still, she returned to the gatherings.

That was why she was sitting near the back of the room when the song began.

It came from the elderly man in the corner. His name was Yusuf, though most of the younger believers called him Uncle Yusuf. He had followed Christ for more than thirty years and had paid for it in ways no one in the room fully understood. He had lost work, friends, inheritance, and several teeth during a beating that was never investigated. Yet whenever he prayed, he sounded less like a victim than a man who had already seen the end of the story and knew Christ would not be defeated.

The song he began was an old one. Miriam did not know all the words, but she knew the melody. It spoke of Christ as light in darkness, refuge in trouble, and shepherd of the scattered. His voice trembled slightly at first, not from fear but from age. Then the widow joined him. Then Laila. Then Pastor Elias. One by one, the room filled with quiet singing.

For a few minutes, fear lost its grip.

Miriam closed her eyes. She thought of her mother’s tears, her father’s silence, and the future that had become uncertain. She thought of Laila risking her safety to share the Gospel. She thought of Uncle Yusuf and the scars he never mentioned unless someone asked. She thought of the believers in other towns, other cities, other nations, gathering behind closed doors because following Jesus had made them strangers in their own communities.

Then someone knocked.

The song stopped immediately.

No one moved.

A second knock came, louder this time.

Pastor Elias looked toward the door, then toward the window. The students lowered their heads. Laila reached for Miriam’s hand beneath the edge of her shawl. Uncle Yusuf remained seated, his expression calm in a way that made Miriam both afraid and strangely comforted.

The knock came again.

This time a voice followed.

“Open.”

What happened next would be remembered differently by each person in the room. Some would remember the sound of the latch. Others would remember the cold air entering as the door opened. Miriam would remember the shoes first, muddy from the rain outside, then the faces of the men standing in the doorway. They were not strangers. That made it worse. One of them had once bought vegetables from the widow. Another had a nephew in the school where the teacher worked. The third was a local official whose presence changed the atmosphere before he spoke a word.

The questions came quickly. Why were they gathered? What were they reading? Who was leading them? Were there foreigners involved? Did they understand the consequences of disturbing the community? Pastor Elias answered carefully. The official was not satisfied. He ordered them to surrender the Bible, the notebooks, and any other materials they had brought.

Miriam watched as Uncle Yusuf slowly stood.

For a moment she feared he would argue. Instead, he picked up the old Bible and held it with both hands. The room seemed to stop breathing. The official stepped forward and took it from him. Uncle Yusuf did not resist.

Then, almost too softly to hear, he began singing again.

The same song.

Only this time his voice did not tremble.

The official turned sharply. “Be quiet.”

Uncle Yusuf stopped for a moment, not out of fear but as though deciding whether obedience to man had finally reached its limit. Then the widow joined him. Her voice was thin but clear. Laila followed. Pastor Elias joined next. Miriam felt her own throat tighten. She wanted to sing, but fear pressed heavily against her chest.

She thought of her family. She thought of the market. She thought of what people would say if her name was written down. She thought of the future she might lose.

Then she remembered the cross.

Her voice entered the song quietly at first, barely more than a whisper. But it was enough. She was singing.

The official shouted again, but the room did not fall silent. No one sang loudly. No one shouted. No one tried to provoke. It was not defiance in the way the world usually understood defiance. It was worship. Quiet, costly, trembling worship offered in a room where fear had every reason to win.

By morning, several of them had been taken for questioning. Others were warned not to gather again. The Bible was not returned. News spread through the town before sunrise. Miriam’s father heard before she arrived home. He was waiting in the courtyard when she entered.

He did not shout this time.

That hurt more.

“Was it worth it?” he asked.

Miriam stood before him, exhausted, frightened, and unable to pretend that nothing had changed. She thought about the song. She thought about Uncle Yusuf standing without anger, the widow singing through fear, Laila’s hand holding hers beneath the shawl, and the name of Jesus resting quietly in a room where people had tried to silence it.

She did not answer immediately.

The morning sun had begun to rise above the rooftops. Somewhere nearby, vendors were opening their shops. Children were walking to school. The town was returning to its usual rhythm, as though nothing had happened.

But Miriam knew something had happened.

A song had been threatened.

And still it had continued.

Years later, when Miriam tried to explain that night to others, she would struggle to describe it. She would not speak first about fear, though there had been fear. She would not begin with the officials, though they had been there. She would not even begin with the cost, though the cost had been real. She would begin with the song.

Because long after the door opened, long after the threats were spoken, long after the Bible was taken, and long after people in the town thought they had succeeded in frightening the believers into silence, the song remained.

And so did the question.

Understanding the Issue

Across parts of Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, following Jesus can carry serious social, legal, economic, and personal consequences. In some places, believers face government restrictions, surveillance, imprisonment, harassment, family rejection, loss of employment, or threats from extremist groups. In other places, persecution is quieter but still painful. A believer may be excluded from family life, denied marriage opportunities, mocked in school, watched by neighbours, or pressured to return to former religious systems.

Persecution does not always look the same everywhere. Sometimes it is public and violent. Sometimes it is private and relational. Sometimes it comes through laws. Sometimes it comes through family pressure, cultural shame, economic punishment, or fear. Yet in every generation, the Church has been strengthened by believers who refused to deny Christ even when faith became costly.

The call to pray for persecuted believers is not optional. Scripture tells us to remember those in bonds as though we were bound with them. Their suffering is not distant from us. They are members of the same Body. When one part suffers, the whole Body is called to care, pray, support, and stand with them.

Reasons to Thank God

• Thank God for believers who remain faithful under pressure.
• Thank God for underground churches, house fellowships, and quiet gatherings where Christ is still worshipped.
• Thank God for pastors, evangelists, disciple-makers, and families serving courageously in difficult places.
• Thank God that persecution cannot silence the Gospel.
• Thank God for the grace He gives His people to endure suffering with hope.

Prayer

Father, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, we lift before You every believer in Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East who is suffering because of faith in Your Son. Strengthen those who gather secretly. Comfort those rejected by family. Encourage those who have lost jobs, homes, friendships, freedom, or safety because they chose to follow Jesus.

Lord, remember those in prison. Stand with those under interrogation. Protect those who are watched, threatened, or falsely accused. Give courage to pastors, evangelists, disciple-makers, families, young believers, and underground churches. Let their faith not fail. Let their witness shine. Let their worship rise even in difficult places.

Forgive us for forgetting those who suffer for Christ. Deliver us from comfortable Christianity that does not remember the persecuted Body. Teach us to pray as though we are bound with them. Let Your Kingdom come in places of opposition, fear, and restriction. May Jesus be glorified through the courage, endurance, and love of His people. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Declaration

Today, I remember the persecuted Church. I will not forget believers who suffer for Christ. I will pray with compassion, stand in faith, and ask God to strengthen His people. By the grace of God, I will follow Jesus with courage, whether faith is convenient or costly.
