The first time it happened, nobody recognised it for what it was.
Sixteen-year-old Ethan was sitting in the middle of a mathematics examination when his chest suddenly tightened. At first he assumed he was becoming ill. His hands felt cold. His breathing became shallow. The room seemed smaller than it had moments earlier. He tried to focus on the questions in front of him, but the numbers began to blur. A strange fear rose inside him, powerful and irrational, as though something terrible was about to happen.
He asked permission to leave the room.
Outside, he leaned against a wall and struggled to catch his breath.
Within twenty minutes the feeling passed.
By evening he had convinced himself it was nothing serious.
Unfortunately, it was not the last time.
Ethan lived in a city where achievement was celebrated almost like a religion. Parents wanted the best for their children. Schools competed for academic rankings. Students carried schedules that would have exhausted many adults. Success was not merely encouraged; it was expected. Examination scores influenced future opportunities. University placements shaped careers. Careers influenced status. Status influenced how people viewed themselves and how others viewed them.
From an early age, Ethan learned that performance opened doors.
His parents loved him deeply, but like many parents they wanted him to have opportunities they never had. They sacrificed financially to place him in a respected school. They encouraged discipline, focus, and excellence. Teachers praised his intelligence. Relatives frequently compared him with other students. Family gatherings often included discussions about grades, scholarships, future careers, and professional success.
No one intended harm.
Yet over time, a subtle message settled deep within Ethan’s heart.
Your value depends on your performance.
If you succeed, you matter.
If you fail, you disappoint everyone.
The message was never spoken so directly, but he heard it anyway.
As academic demands increased, so did the pressure. His days began before sunrise and often ended well after midnight. School was followed by tutoring. Tutoring was followed by assignments. Assignments were followed by exam preparation. Weekends disappeared beneath revision schedules and practice tests. The few moments of rest he allowed himself often carried guilt because someone else might be studying harder.
What troubled him most was that nothing ever seemed enough.
A score of ninety percent brought relief for a day.
Then came the next examination.
A class ranking generated satisfaction for a week.
Then expectations rose again.
Every achievement became another step in a race that never ended.
The panic attacks became more frequent.
At first Ethan hid them carefully. He worried that people would think he was weak. He feared disappointing his parents. He feared becoming the subject of conversations among relatives and teachers. Most of all, he feared losing the image everyone seemed to have of him.
Eventually his mother noticed the changes.
He no longer laughed as easily.
He slept poorly.
He seemed constantly exhausted.
One evening she found him sitting alone at the dining table long after everyone else had gone to bed. Books surrounded him. Notes covered the table. A half-finished cup of tea sat untouched beside a stack of textbooks.
For several minutes she simply watched.
Then she asked a question.
“Are you happy?”
Ethan looked up, surprised.
The question seemed almost irrelevant.
People asked about grades.
People asked about exams.
People asked about university.
Very few asked whether he was happy.
At first he tried to dismiss the question. Then, unexpectedly, tears filled his eyes. The pressure he had carried silently for years finally surfaced. He spoke about the fear of failure, the constant comparisons, the exhaustion, and the feeling that no matter how much he achieved, it never seemed enough.
His mother listened quietly.
When he finished, she reached across the table and took his hand.
“You know we love you, don’t you?” she asked.
“Of course.”
“Not because of your grades.”
He looked down.
“Not because of a university acceptance letter.”
Still he said nothing.
“Not because of your achievements.”
For the first time, Ethan realised he was not entirely sure he believed her.
That realisation troubled him deeply.
Over the following months, Ethan began speaking with a mentor from his church. Their conversations gradually shifted away from examinations and toward identity. Together they explored a question he had never seriously considered.
Who are you when you are not achieving?
At first he struggled to answer.
Like many young people across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, he had spent years building his identity around performance. Academic success, professional goals, athletic accomplishments, social recognition, and public approval had become the foundation upon which he measured his worth.
Yet foundations built upon achievement are fragile because achievement can always be lost.
Eventually his mentor opened to a familiar passage of Scripture and read aloud how Jesus was baptised before beginning His public ministry. Before Jesus healed anyone. Before He preached. Before He performed miracles. Before He accomplished anything publicly, the Father declared, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
The words stayed with Ethan.
For the first time, he considered the possibility that identity might come before achievement rather than after it.
Years later, Ethan would graduate, build a successful career, and achieve many of the goals that once seemed so important. Yet when people asked what changed his life, he rarely mentioned the awards, certificates, or accomplishments.
Instead, he spoke about a different discovery.
He learned that success is a wonderful servant but a terrible master.
He learned that achievement can enrich life but cannot define it.
And he learned that when success becomes a god, it demands sacrifices it was never meant to receive.
Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, millions of students, professionals, entrepreneurs, and families are navigating similar pressures. Ambition is not the enemy. Excellence is not the problem. Hard work remains valuable. The danger arises when identity becomes attached to performance and human worth becomes measured by accomplishment.
The question remains as relevant today as it was for Ethan.
What happens when success becomes a god?
And what freedom becomes possible when we remember that our deepest value comes not from what we achieve, but from whose we are?
Matthew 3:17
Mark 8:36
Colossians 3:23-24
Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, many young people are growing up under intense pressure to succeed academically, professionally, socially, and financially. In some communities, examination results can feel like a verdict on a child’s future. In others, professional status, income level, public recognition, family expectations, and social comparison place enormous emotional weight on students and young adults.
Excellence is not wrong. Diligence is not wrong. Hard work, discipline, and ambition can honour God when they are placed under His lordship. The danger begins when achievement becomes the foundation of identity. When people believe they are valuable only when they succeed, failure becomes more than disappointment; it becomes a threat to the soul.
The Gospel offers a better foundation. Before Jesus performed any public miracle, preached any sermon, or fulfilled any visible ministry assignment, the Father declared Him beloved. This reminds us that identity comes before assignment. We work from love, not for love. We pursue excellence as stewards, not as slaves. Our worth is rooted not in performance, applause, certificates, wealth, or status, but in the God who created us, loves us, redeems us, and calls us His own.
Encourage one student, young adult, professional, or family member this week. Remind them that their worth is not defined by grades, income, titles, performance, or public approval. Pray with them if possible and help them see achievement as stewardship, not identity.
My Action Step: __________________________
Father, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, we lift before You students, young people, professionals, parents, teachers, and families across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East who are carrying heavy pressure to perform, achieve, succeed, and prove their worth. Bring peace to anxious hearts. Bring rest to weary minds. Bring truth where comparison, fear, and unrealistic expectations have created bondage.
Lord, teach us to pursue excellence without worshipping success. Help parents, teachers, mentors, leaders, and churches to affirm identity before achievement. Deliver this generation from the lie that human worth depends on performance. Let young people know they are seen, loved, called, and valued by You.
May Your Kingdom come in classrooms, homes, universities, workplaces, examination halls, businesses, and communities. Raise a generation that works diligently, serves faithfully, and lives freely from the security of being loved by You. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Today I reject the lie that my worth is defined by performance. I will pursue excellence as stewardship, not as slavery. I am loved by God before I achieve anything, and by His grace I will encourage others to find their identity in Him.
