Kingdom Focus: Leadership and Governance in Oceania, Asia and the Middle East
Big Question: What kind of leaders do nations deserve?
For many years, the people believed their greatest problem was a lack of resources.
The nation possessed fertile land, valuable minerals, strategic trade routes, talented citizens, and a rich cultural heritage stretching back centuries. Visitors often remarked on the country’s potential. Economists published reports describing opportunities for growth. International organisations highlighted its strengths. On paper, the future looked promising.
Yet year after year, progress remained frustratingly slow.
Roads deteriorated faster than they were repaired. Schools struggled with inadequate resources. Hospitals carried burdens they could barely manage. Young people graduated with dreams yet often struggled to find opportunities. Farmers worked tirelessly while remaining vulnerable to forces beyond their control.
Whenever people gathered in markets, homes, cafés, offices, or places of worship, conversations eventually turned toward the same question.
Why are things not improving?
Everyone had an answer.
Some blamed the economy.
Others blamed foreign powers.
Still others blamed history, geography, or circumstances beyond anyone’s control.
Few realised that the deeper issue was not a lack of resources.
It was a crisis of leadership.
In the capital city stood an imposing government building where important decisions were made every day. Ministers held meetings. Advisors prepared reports. Officials debated policies. Press conferences announced new initiatives. Committees formed and dissolved with regular frequency.
Yet despite all the activity, many ordinary citizens felt increasingly disconnected from those leading them.
One of those citizens was a schoolteacher named Elias.
For nearly thirty years he taught history to secondary school students. He loved his country deeply and believed strongly in the potential of future generations. Every year he encouraged young people to become honest leaders, responsible citizens, and contributors to society.
Yet privately he carried a growing frustration.
Many leaders seemed more interested in maintaining power than serving people.
Promises appeared during election seasons and disappeared afterward. Decisions affecting millions were often made without consulting those most impacted. Public trust declined steadily. Cynicism became common.
“Nothing ever changes,” people frequently said.
Elias hated hearing those words.
Because once a society loses hope, even good opportunities become difficult to recognise.
One year, a severe drought affected several regions of the country. Crops failed. Food prices increased. Rural communities struggled. Newspapers covered the crisis extensively. Government officials issued statements. Experts proposed solutions.
Then something unexpected happened.
The nation’s leader announced that he would personally visit several of the affected areas.
Most people assumed it was simply another public relations exercise.
They had seen similar visits before.
Convoys would arrive.
Photographs would be taken.
Speeches would be delivered.
Then everyone would leave.
This time was different.
Instead of spending a few hours in carefully selected locations, the leader remained for several days. He visited farms. He met community leaders. He listened to teachers, healthcare workers, business owners, parents, and young people. He walked through villages without extensive ceremony. He asked questions. More importantly, he listened to the answers.
One afternoon he met Elias.
The conversation lasted less than fifteen minutes, yet it became one of the most discussed moments of the entire visit.
After listening to local concerns, the leader asked whether anyone had additional comments.
Elias raised his hand.
The room became quiet.
“Your Excellency,” he began respectfully, “the problem is not that our people are unwilling to work. The problem is not that we lack ideas. The problem is not even that we lack resources.”
The room grew even quieter.
“The greatest problem,” Elias continued, “is that too many leaders spend their time asking, ‘How can people serve me?’ when they should be asking, ‘How can I serve the people entrusted to me?’ “
Several officials shifted uncomfortably.
Others stared at the floor.
The leader said nothing for several moments.
Then he thanked Elias for his honesty.
Most assumed the conversation would be forgotten.
It wasn’t.
Over the following months, noticeable changes began appearing. Government consultations expanded. Community leaders gained greater access to decision-makers. Several long-ignored projects received renewed attention. Transparency measures increased. Problems did not disappear overnight, but people began noticing something different.
Leadership was becoming less about authority and more about responsibility.
Years later, when journalists asked the leader what influenced many of those decisions, he often returned to that meeting.
“I realised something important,” he once explained. “The higher a person rises in leadership, the easier it becomes to stop listening. When leaders stop listening, they eventually stop leading.”
Those words spread widely.
Because they touched a truth far larger than one nation.
Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, millions of people long for leaders who listen, serve, act with integrity, pursue justice, and place the wellbeing of citizens above personal ambition. Whether in government, business, education, media, ministry, or community organisations, leadership shapes the future of nations.
Scripture consistently presents leadership not as privilege but as stewardship. God entrusts influence to people not for personal gain but for the flourishing of others. The best leaders understand that authority is not measured by how many people serve them, but by how faithfully they serve those entrusted to their care.
Perhaps the future of many nations depends less on finding powerful leaders and more on finding servant leaders.
Leaders who are willing to listen.
Leaders who are willing to learn.
Leaders who remember that every policy, decision, and action eventually affects real people.
And perhaps the most important question is not simply what kind of leaders nations have, but what kind of leaders nations choose to become.
Mark 10:42-45
Proverbs 29:2
1 Timothy 2:1-2
Leadership shapes the direction of nations. Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, decisions made by political leaders, public servants, community leaders, educators, business executives, and religious leaders influence the daily lives of millions of people. Good leadership can strengthen institutions, improve opportunities, build trust, and create environments where communities flourish. Poor leadership often produces instability, division, corruption, injustice, and lost opportunities.
Throughout Scripture, leadership is presented as stewardship rather than status. God entrusts authority to individuals so they may serve others faithfully. The biblical model of leadership emphasises humility, wisdom, integrity, accountability, courage, compassion, and justice. Jesus Himself demonstrated that true greatness is found not in being served, but in serving others.
Many societies today are not merely searching for stronger leaders. They are searching for trustworthy leaders. The future of nations often depends upon whether leaders remain willing to listen, learn, and place the common good above personal ambition.
Identify one area where God has entrusted you with influence, whether in your family, workplace, church, business, or community. Commit to listening more carefully, serving more intentionally, and leading with greater humility and integrity.
My Action Step: __________________________
Father, we lift before You the leaders of Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. We pray for presidents, prime ministers, monarchs, governors, legislators, judges, community leaders, educators, business leaders, and spiritual leaders. Grant them wisdom, humility, courage, integrity, and compassion.
Raise up servant leaders who value people above power, stewardship above status, and righteousness above personal gain. Give leaders ears to hear the concerns of those they serve and hearts willing to act with justice and mercy. Protect nations from corruption, abuse of power, and selfish ambition.
May Your Kingdom come through leadership that reflects Your character. Let decisions promote peace, justice, opportunity, dignity, and human flourishing. Strengthen those who lead faithfully and raise up a new generation committed to serving others. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Today I choose to lead through service, integrity, and humility. I will use every opportunity God gives me to serve others faithfully. By His grace, I will influence my family, community, and generation for righteousness and good.
