Big Question

How many priceless testimonies disappear simply because nobody stopped long enough to listen?

Story

Lin Wei loved telling stories through a camera. At seventeen years of age, he rarely went anywhere without one. His phone contained thousands of photographs, while his computer held carefully edited videos of sunsets over Taipei, bustling night markets, high-speed trains racing across the countryside, mountain trails after heavy rain, and short documentaries he created for school assignments. His teachers often remarked that he had an unusual eye for detail. He could find beauty in ordinary places and tell stories that other people completely overlooked.

Ironically, the greatest story in his life was quietly unfolding inside his own home, yet it remained the one story he had never thought to record.

Lin Wei lived with his parents and his grandfather, Chen Guoliang, in a modest apartment on the outskirts of Taipei. Every evening after dinner, Grandpa Chen followed the same familiar routine. Carrying a small flask of tea, he would slowly make his way downstairs to a shaded courtyard where several elderly neighbours gathered beneath large banyan trees. They talked about family, politics, old memories, changing times, and occasionally about the years that had shaped their generation. Sometimes Lin Wei would pass by with his camera slung over his shoulder, eager to meet friends or capture another video before sunset.

Each time, Grandpa Chen greeted him with the same warm smile.

“Lin Wei,” he would say, “one day I’ll tell you about the village where I grew up. It was a very different world from this one.”

His grandson always smiled respectfully before answering in almost exactly the same way. “I’d like that, Grandpa. Maybe tomorrow.” Then he would hurry on, convinced there would always be another opportunity.

Tomorrow quietly became next week. Next week became next month. Months slowly turned into years. Grandpa never stopped asking, not because he wanted attention, but because he carried memories he hoped someone in the family would preserve before they were gone forever. Lin Wei, like many young people, assumed those stories would always be waiting whenever he finally found the time to listen.

One Monday morning, Lin Wei’s media studies teacher announced the school’s annual documentary competition. This year’s theme appeared on the classroom screen in large bold letters:

“THE STORY THAT MUST NEVER BE LOST.”

The assignment immediately excited the class. Students began discussing ideas about famous temples, disappearing traditions, indigenous communities, ancient architecture, and cultural festivals. Lin Wei considered filming one of Taiwan’s historic villages or documenting traditional lantern craftsmen. The ideas were interesting, yet none of them felt especially original.

At the end of the lesson, as the students packed away their equipment, their teacher offered one final thought. “Many people believe history only lives in museums,” she said. “Sometimes the greatest history is sitting quietly at your own dinner table, waiting for somebody to ask the right questions.”

Those words refused to leave Lin Wei’s mind. Throughout the journey home, they echoed repeatedly in his thoughts. By the time he reached the apartment, he realised that for years he had been searching for extraordinary stories everywhere except the place where they were most likely to be found.

The following afternoon he walked downstairs carrying not only his camera but also a tripod, a microphone, spare batteries, and a notebook filled with questions. Grandpa Chen looked up from his tea, smiled broadly, and laughed. “Well,” he said, “it seems you have finally decided to interview an old man.”

Lin Wei laughed with him as he began setting up the equipment beneath the shade of the trees. “I think I’ve spent years looking for stories,” he replied, “without realising the greatest one has been sitting here all along.”

Grandpa Chen grew quiet for a moment before looking thoughtfully into the distance. “Then don’t waste today,” he said softly. “Some stories cannot wait forever.”

Neither of them realised how true those words would soon become.

Lin Wei pressed the record button, checked the audio levels one final time, and settled into the chair opposite his grandfather. For a brief moment neither of them spoke. The familiar courtyard suddenly felt different. What had begun as a school assignment was becoming something much more personal, though neither of them fully understood it yet.

“Let’s begin at the beginning,” Lin Wei said with a smile. “Tell me about your childhood.”

Grandpa Chen looked beyond the apartment buildings toward the distant mountains. It was as though his eyes had travelled many decades into the past. When he finally spoke, his voice was calm and unhurried, carrying the quiet confidence of someone who had long ago made peace with difficult memories.

“I was born in a small farming village,” he began. “Life was simple, but it was never easy. We owned very little, yet somehow we always had enough. Your great-grandfather believed that a person’s wealth should never be measured by the size of his land but by the condition of his character. I did not appreciate those words when I was young. Like many boys, I dreamed about adventure, travel, and success. I thought happiness was somewhere beyond the mountains.”

He paused for a moment before continuing. “Then everything changed. Conflict reached our region, and families began leaving with only what they could carry. Some were separated forever. Others never discovered what became of parents, brothers, sisters, or close friends. When people speak about war, they usually count victories and defeats. Those who lived through it remember something different. We remember empty chairs at dinner tables.”

Lin Wei found himself lowering the camera slightly before realising he was still recording. He had expected stories about farming, old traditions, and village festivals. Instead, his grandfather was opening a door into a world he had never imagined.

Grandpa Chen smiled gently when he noticed his grandson’s expression. “You see why I kept asking you to listen?” he said. “History is not only made by famous people. Most history is carried quietly by ordinary families.”

The interview continued through the afternoon. Grandpa described arriving in Taiwan with little more than a small cloth bag containing two changes of clothes, a family photograph, and a notebook given to him by his father. Finding work proved difficult. Some nights he slept in abandoned buildings with other young men trying to build new lives. There were seasons when hope seemed painfully distant, yet he never forgot the words his father had spoken before they were separated.

“He placed his hand on my shoulder and said, ‘Chen, if we never see one another again, remember this. Never allow hardship to make your heart bitter. A bitter heart loses twice.’ I did not understand those words until many years later.”

Lin Wei leaned forward. “Did you ever see him again?”

Grandpa slowly shook his head. “No. Not in this life. For many years I prayed that one day we would be reunited. Eventually I realised that some prayers are answered differently from the way we expect. I stopped asking only for reunion and began asking God to help me become the kind of man my father prayed I would become.”

The conversation gradually shifted from history to faith. Lin Wei had known that his grandfather attended church every Sunday, but he had never asked why his faith remained so steady after everything he had endured.

Grandpa Chen’s face brightened immediately. “That is the greatest story of all,” he said warmly. “Several years after arriving in Taiwan, I met an elderly missionary couple. They had very little money, yet they treated lonely young workers as though we were members of their own family. They never argued with me about religion. They simply loved people. One evening the husband opened his Bible and read the words of Jesus: ‘Come to Me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.’ Until that moment I had spent my entire life trying to survive. That night I discovered Someone who wanted to give me rest.”

He smiled quietly as he looked toward the Bible resting beside his chair. “I gave my life to Christ that evening. My circumstances did not change overnight. I was still poor. I still missed my family. I still worked long hours. But something inside me became different. Hope moved into my heart, and it never left.”

Lin Wei noticed tears forming in his grandfather’s eyes. “Do you know what I have prayed every morning for almost forty years?” Grandpa asked. Without waiting for an answer, he reached into his shirt pocket and carefully unfolded a small, worn piece of paper. The edges had become soft with age from being opened thousands of times.

Across the page were handwritten names.

Beside every name was a short prayer. Some asked for wisdom. Others for protection, salvation, faithful marriages, or courage to follow Christ. Lin Wei found his own name near the bottom of the page. Beside it Grandpa had written, “Lord, let him use his gifts to tell stories that point people to You.”

Lin Wei could no longer hold back his emotions. Throughout his childhood he had admired his grandfather’s kindness, yet he had never realised that every day, long before anyone else in the family awoke, Grandpa Chen had quietly been carrying each of them before the throne of God.

As the afternoon sunlight slowly faded, Lin Wei looked at the recording timer on his camera. More than four hours had passed, yet it felt as though only minutes had gone by. He had started the interview hoping to preserve family history. Instead, he had discovered the spiritual inheritance that had quietly shaped his family for generations.

When the interview finally ended, Grandpa Chen gently rested his hand on his grandson’s shoulder. “Remember this,” he said. “The greatest inheritance parents and grandparents leave is not land, money, or possessions. It is a life that teaches the next generation to trust Jesus.”

Lin Wei carefully switched off the camera, unaware that within a few short weeks those words would become one of the greatest treasures he had ever received.

Kingdom Insight

Every family possesses an inheritance that cannot be measured by bank accounts, land titles, or treasured possessions. Long before wealth is transferred from one generation to another, something far more valuable is already being passed down. It is the inheritance of faith, wisdom, character, perseverance, answered prayers, and the testimonies of God’s faithfulness through ordinary lives.

Sadly, many families discover this inheritance only after it has almost disappeared. Grandparents grow older. Parents become busier. Children become occupied with education, careers, technology, and endless responsibilities. Conversations become shorter while opportunities quietly disappear. Eventually, voices that once filled family gatherings become silent, taking with them stories that could have strengthened generations yet to come.

Lin Wei almost lost that inheritance. He admired his grandfather, respected him, and loved him deeply. Yet love alone was not enough. Until he intentionally stopped to listen, he never realised the extraordinary testimony God had been writing through his grandfather’s ordinary life. What began as a school documentary became a sacred moment of discipleship between two generations.

Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly instructed His people to remember, to teach, and to tell. The faithfulness of one generation was never intended to end with them. Every testimony was meant to become encouragement for the next generation, revealing that the God who sustained yesterday remains faithful today and forever.

Listening is therefore more than a communication skill. It is one of God’s chosen methods for preserving spiritual legacy. Every conversation between generations has the potential to strengthen faith, deepen wisdom, and remind us that God has been working long before we were born.

Exploring Today’s Scriptures

In 2 Corinthians 2, Paul writes to a church that had experienced sin, correction, sorrow, and strained relationships. A serious offence had occurred within the Christian community, and disciplinary action had been taken. However, when the offender showed genuine sorrow and repentance, Paul instructed the believers not to continue punishing him indefinitely. Instead, they were to forgive, comfort, and reaffirm their love for him so that he would not be overwhelmed by excessive grief.

This teaches us that biblical correction is never intended to destroy a person. Its purpose is to awaken repentance, protect the community, restore what has been damaged, and bring the person back into healthy fellowship with God and others. There may be times when firm correction is necessary, but when genuine repentance occurs, believers must also know how to extend mercy. A family, church, or community that knows only how to expose failure but not how to restore the repentant person does not fully reflect the heart of Christ.

Paul also warns that unresolved bitterness and an unwillingness to forgive can give Satan an opportunity to divide God’s people. The enemy does not only work through obvious rebellion; he can also exploit prolonged anger, resentment, humiliation, and the refusal to restore someone who has sincerely repented. Forgiveness does not mean pretending that wrongdoing never happened, nor does it remove the need for wisdom, accountability, or appropriate boundaries. It means refusing to allow an offence to control the future or permanently define the person who committed it.

Later in the chapter, Paul describes believers as people whom God leads in Christ’s triumphal procession. Through them, God spreads the knowledge of Christ like a fragrance. To those who are being saved, the message of Christ carries the fragrance of life, but to those who reject Him, it exposes the seriousness of remaining separated from God. Paul therefore asks who is sufficient for such a responsibility. His question reminds us that representing Christ is not a casual assignment. Our conduct, words, relationships, responses to failure, and treatment of others communicate something about the God we claim to serve.

Paul concludes by distinguishing sincere servants of God from those who treat God’s Word as merchandise. He refuses to manipulate the message for personal advantage. He speaks sincerely, as one sent from God and accountable to Him. This is an important lesson for every generation: the truth of God must be handled with humility, integrity, and reverence rather than altered for applause, profit, popularity, or influence.

Exodus 32 presents a painful contrast. While Moses remained on Mount Sinai receiving God’s instructions, the Israelites became impatient because his return appeared to be delayed. Rather than waiting upon God, they pressured Aaron to make visible gods that could go before them. Aaron collected their gold, fashioned a calf, and presented it as the god that had brought them out of Egypt.

The people had witnessed extraordinary miracles, crossed the Red Sea, received provision in the wilderness, and heard God’s covenant. Yet when they could no longer see Moses and did not understand what God was doing, they quickly turned to something they could see, touch, celebrate, and control. Their actions reveal how easily impatience can become a doorway to idolatry. When people become uncomfortable with God’s timing, they may create substitutes that promise immediate satisfaction but ultimately lead them away from Him.

The golden calf was not merely a statue. It represented the human tendency to replace the living God with something more convenient. Money, success, family expectations, political influence, public recognition, technology, tradition, religious personalities, or personal ambition can gradually occupy the place that belongs to God alone. Anything we trust, pursue, fear, or obey more than God can become an idol of the heart.

Aaron’s response also reveals the danger of weak leadership. Instead of resisting the people’s pressure, he cooperated with their rebellion. Later, when Moses confronted him, Aaron minimised his responsibility and gave an explanation that attempted to make the calf’s appearance sound almost accidental. His failure reminds us that leaders must not allow the demands of people to become more influential than obedience to God. True spiritual leadership requires courage, truthfulness, accountability, and a willingness to resist collective pressure when that pressure contradicts God’s Word.

Moses responded differently. He confronted the sin, but he also interceded for the people. He appealed to God’s covenant, reputation, and promises. Moses did not excuse the people’s rebellion, yet he stood before God pleading for mercy. His example shows that mature spiritual leadership holds truth and compassion together. It neither conceals sin nor abandons those who have fallen. It confronts wrongdoing, calls for repentance, and intercedes for restoration.

Psalm 82 shifts our attention to another area of accountability. God stands in judgment over rulers, leaders, and those entrusted with authority. He confronts them because they have judged unjustly and shown partiality to the wicked. He commands them to defend the weak and the fatherless, uphold the rights of the poor and oppressed, rescue the weak and needy, and deliver them from the power of the wicked.

This psalm teaches that authority is a sacred trust rather than an opportunity for exploitation. Whether a person leads a nation, church, organisation, business, household, school, or community, God expects that authority to be used justly. Leaders will answer to Him for the way they treat those who possess less influence, wealth, education, protection, or social standing.

Psalm 82 also exposes the consequences of failed leadership. When those responsible for justice walk in darkness, the foundations of society are shaken. Corruption at the top eventually produces suffering throughout the community. The poor remain unprotected, the vulnerable are silenced, the powerful act without restraint, and wrongdoing begins to appear normal.

Yet the psalm ends with a declaration of hope: “Rise up, O God, judge the earth.” Human systems may fail, but God remains the final Judge. No authority is beyond His reach, no injustice is hidden from His sight, and no powerful person is exempt from accountability. God sees those who have been neglected, exploited, mistreated, or denied justice, and He calls His people to share His concern for them.

Taken together, today’s readings show us that spiritual inheritance must include more than stories of success. We must also pass on lessons about failure, repentance, forgiveness, courage, justice, and restoration. Future generations need to know not only what God has done for us, but also how He corrected us when we wandered, forgave us when we repented, delivered us from the idols we created, and taught us to stand for those who could not defend themselves.

An honest testimony does not pretend that every decision was right or that every season was easy. It acknowledges human weakness while magnifying the mercy and faithfulness of God. Such testimonies help younger generations understand that failure does not have to become the end of the story when people humble themselves, receive correction, return to God, and make restitution where necessary.

Seeing Life Through God’s Word

Lin Wei originally believed that he was simply preserving his family’s history. He wanted to record the stories of migration, hardship, sacrifice, business struggles, cultural change, and perseverance that had shaped his grandfather’s generation. He expected accounts of courage and achievement that could inspire his children and grandchildren.

As the conversations continued, however, his grandfather began to share more than heroic memories. He spoke honestly about decisions he regretted, seasons when fear influenced him, relationships that had been damaged through pride, and moments when the pressure to provide caused him to neglect those closest to him. He also described how God had confronted him, how painful apologies had opened the door to reconciliation, and how forgiveness had prevented certain family divisions from becoming permanent.

Lin Wei discovered that his grandfather’s greatest gift was not the image of a flawless man. It was the testimony of a man who had learned to repent, receive mercy, correct injustice, forgive others, and return to God after making serious mistakes. His story demonstrated that spiritual maturity is not proven by pretending we have never failed. It is revealed in the humility with which we respond when God exposes our failure.

Second Corinthians 2 teaches us that genuine repentance must be met with forgiveness, comfort, and reaffirmed love. The purpose of correction is not endless humiliation but restoration. Lin Wei’s grandfather had experienced the pain of broken relationships, but he had also witnessed how sincere apologies and patient forgiveness could rebuild trust over time.

Exodus 32 warns us that people can quickly abandon what they know is right when they become impatient, afraid, or desperate for something they can control. Lin Wei’s grandfather admitted that some of his poorest decisions were made during seasons when he could not understand God’s timing. Rather than waiting, praying, and seeking wisdom, he sometimes created his own solutions. Those choices produced consequences, but they also became enduring lessons about the danger of replacing trust in God with self-made security.

Psalm 82 reminded Lin Wei that a family testimony should also include how people used their authority. His grandfather spoke about workers he had failed to treat fairly, relatives whose needs he had once ignored, and vulnerable people he later learned to defend. He wanted the younger generation to understand that success without justice is not true success and that God measures leadership partly by how the weakest people are treated.

Through these conversations, Lin Wei realised that preserving family history meant preserving both victories and warnings. A testimony loses much of its power when every failure is removed, every conflict is concealed, and every ancestor is presented as faultless. The next generation needs honest stories that explain how pride damages relationships, how impatience creates idols, how injustice wounds communities, how repentance begins healing, and how God’s mercy can redeem what human weakness has broken.

Lin Wei’s grandfather did not merely leave behind memories. He left a spiritual map showing where the family had wandered, where God had corrected them, where forgiveness had restored them, and where future generations needed to walk more wisely.

Commands to Obey

Things to Avoid

Avoid continuing to punish someone who has genuinely repented and taken responsibility.

Avoid using another person’s past failure as a weapon during every disagreement.

Avoid allowing bitterness to become a permanent inheritance within your family.

Avoid confusing forgiveness with the absence of accountability or appropriate boundaries.

Avoid altering God’s Word to gain money, admiration, influence, or acceptance.

Avoid creating substitutes for God when you become impatient with His timing.

Avoid allowing public pressure to lead you into disobedience.

Avoid excusing your decisions by blaming the people who influenced you.

Avoid covering family failures so completely that future generations cannot learn from them.

Avoid presenting a false image of perfection that prevents others from understanding God’s mercy.

Avoid showing partiality to the powerful while ignoring the rights of the vulnerable.

Avoid measuring leadership only by achievement while neglecting justice and compassion.

Avoid remaining silent when weak or oppressed people require protection.

Avoid assuming that earthly status, wealth, or authority can prevent divine accountability.

Kingdom Action Step

Before this week ends, intentionally spend time with an older family member, mature believer, trusted leader, or someone whose life contains valuable lessons for the next generation. If distance prevents a personal visit, arrange a telephone or video conversation. With their permission, record the discussion or write down the important parts so the testimony can be preserved.

Do not ask only about achievements, promotions, possessions, or moments of success. Create room for an honest conversation about failure, correction, forgiveness, justice, and restoration. Approach the discussion respectfully, without attempting to expose or shame anyone. The purpose is to understand how God worked through the real events of their life.

You might ask questions such as:

“How did you first come to know Jesus Christ?”

“Was there a time when impatience or fear led you to make a decision you later regretted?”

“Has God ever corrected you strongly about an attitude, relationship, or action?”

“Is there someone you had to forgive before healing could begin?”

“Was there a relationship that God helped you restore after a serious disagreement?”

“What mistake would you warn the next generation not to repeat?”

“Have you ever had to apologise, make restitution, or accept responsibility for hurting someone?”

“How did God teach you to use authority or influence more justly?”

“Who among the vulnerable, poor, or overlooked influenced your understanding of compassion?”

“What truth about God’s mercy would you most want your children and grandchildren to remember?”

“How can I pray for you today?”

Listen carefully and without condemnation. Honour their courage if they share painful memories. Do not circulate sensitive information carelessly or turn their testimony into gossip. Preserve only what they have given you permission to preserve, and treat their vulnerability as a sacred trust.

After the conversation, consider your own story. Write down one failure from which God taught you an enduring lesson, one relationship in which forgiveness became necessary, one idol God exposed in your heart, and one occasion when He taught you to defend or care for someone vulnerable.

End by recording what you would like the next generation to learn from these experiences. Let your testimony communicate not that you were perfect, but that God was merciful, patient, just, and faithful through every season.

Personal
Heavenly Father, thank You for every person You have placed in my life to teach, encourage, correct, and strengthen my faith. Give me a humble heart that is willing to learn from those who have walked with You for many years. Help me never to become so busy that I overlook the wisdom You desire to pass on through older generations. Make my own life a testimony that points others to Jesus Christ.

Immediate Family
Lord, strengthen relationships within our homes. Help parents faithfully disciple their children, children honour their parents, and grandparents joyfully pass on the stories of Your goodness. Let conversations within our families become opportunities to share faith, encourage one another, and remember Your faithfulness through every season of life.

Father, we thank You for every generation within our families. Bless our grandparents, parents, children, grandchildren, uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Heal broken relationships, restore communication where silence has grown, and preserve every testimony that will strengthen those who come after us. Church Family and Community
Lord, build churches where generations walk together rather than apart. Raise older believers who willingly mentor younger disciples, and give younger believers hearts that eagerly receive wisdom. Protect the Church from becoming divided by age, culture, or preference. Let every congregation become a family where spiritual fathers and mothers invest faithfully in future generations.

Prayer for Taiwan
Father, we pray for the people of Taiwan. Strengthen families throughout the nation and restore meaningful relationships between grandparents, parents, and children. Bless churches as they disciple the next generation, encourage elderly believers with renewed strength, and raise young men and women who will faithfully carry the Gospel into every community. May Your peace, wisdom, and salvation spread throughout the nation.

Prayer for Asia
Lord, we lift before You the nations of Asia. Raise generations of faithful disciples who will preserve the truth of Your Word and proclaim the Gospel with courage. Strengthen families, renew churches, and help believers pass on a vibrant faith that transforms homes, communities, and nations for generations to come.

Prayer for the Unreached
Father, remember every unreached people group across Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East. Send labourers filled with Your Spirit to every language, tribe, and community. May entire families come to know Christ, and may new believers quickly become disciple-makers who faithfully pass the Gospel from one generation to another until every people group has heard the Good News.

Daily Declaration

Today I choose to value the wisdom of those who have gone before me.
I will honour the generations God has placed in my life.
I will listen carefully to testimonies of His faithfulness.
I will preserve the spiritual inheritance entrusted to my family.
I will faithfully pass my faith to the next generation.
I will become a disciple who remembers God’s goodness and proclaims it to others.
I will see like an eagle.
I will lead like a lion.
I will serve like Christ.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.
