Big Question

How many broken relationships could be restored if people simply spoke to one another instead of speaking about one another?

Story

Hope Mountain Fellowship stood on a hillside overlooking the green valleys outside Goroka in Papua New Guinea. Every Sunday, long before the worship service began, people could be seen making their way along narrow mountain paths from villages scattered across the surrounding hills. Some carried small children on their backs. Others walked together as families, laughing as they crossed streams and climbed the final slopes leading to the church. By the time the first song began, the wooden sanctuary was filled with joyful voices that echoed across the valley.

The church was known throughout the province for its love for God’s Word and for the remarkable unity shared among its members. Visitors often commented that there seemed to be a genuine affection between the leaders. Pastor Michael Kora thanked God for that often because he knew unity did not happen by accident. It was something that had been carefully nurtured through years of prayer, humility, forgiveness, and shared service.

Among the church leaders, two men were especially respected.

Samuel Aiye coordinated the church’s community outreach. He possessed an unusual gift for organising people and resources. Whenever floods damaged nearby villages or families faced unexpected hardship, Samuel quietly mobilised volunteers, gathered supplies, and ensured help reached those who needed it most. He rarely sought attention, preferring that the work speak for itself.

Peter Wama served in a very different way. His greatest joy was opening the Scriptures with new believers. Week after week he travelled to remote villages, leading Discovery Bible Studies beneath trees, inside family homes, and wherever people gathered to learn God’s Word. He possessed a gentle spirit, listened carefully, and had helped many young Christians take their first steps of faith.

Their personalities could not have been more different, yet for nearly fifteen years they had served side by side. Samuel planned carefully. Peter related naturally. Samuel focused on details. Peter focused on people. Together they complemented one another so well that members often joked they were like two hands working together to accomplish the same task.

Everything changed because of a conversation that never actually took place.

Preparations were underway for the church’s annual community medical outreach, one of the largest ministries Hope Mountain Fellowship organised each year. Doctors, nurses, volunteers, youth workers, and church members from several nearby villages all participated. During one planning meeting, the discussions ran much longer than expected. Several important decisions still needed to be made, but Peter quietly excused himself because an elderly church member had suffered a serious accident earlier that day and urgently needed a pastoral visit.

Pastor Michael asked Samuel to remain behind and coordinate the final arrangements before everyone went home.

Neither man thought anything unusual had happened.

A few days later, however, Peter was approached by a volunteer after a Bible study.

“I heard Samuel wasn’t very happy that you left the meeting early,” the volunteer said quietly. “Someone mentioned he felt you weren’t available when the real work needed to be done.”

Peter looked surprised. Samuel had never spoken to him about such a concern. He thanked the volunteer and dismissed the comment, convincing himself it was probably a misunderstanding.

But once a seed has been planted, the mind has a remarkable ability to water it.

During the following week, Peter noticed that Samuel seemed quieter than usual. At the next meeting, Samuel spoke briefly before returning to his notes. Had he always done that? Peter could not remember. Yet now every ordinary action seemed to carry hidden meaning.

Not long afterwards, Samuel experienced something similar. Another church member casually remarked, “Peter feels outreach decisions are becoming too centralised. He thinks you’re making too many decisions without consulting everyone.”

Samuel frowned. That did not sound like Peter at all. They had served together for years without serious disagreement. Still, instead of asking Peter directly, he quietly wondered whether there might be some truth behind the comment.

Over the next several weeks, nothing dramatic happened.

That was precisely the problem.

Both men remained polite. They prayed together during leadership meetings. They greeted one another warmly on Sundays. They continued serving faithfully. Yet the easy conversations they had once enjoyed slowly disappeared. Small misunderstandings went unasked. Honest questions remained unspoken. Trust quietly gave way to assumptions, while assumptions gradually became silent conclusions.

Pastor Michael noticed the change almost immediately. Not because anyone complained, but because two brothers who had once naturally laughed together now carefully avoided opportunities to speak alone. Their ministry continued, but their friendship slowly faded beneath the weight of words neither of them had actually spoken.

One Wednesday evening, after the elders finished praying together, Pastor Michael quietly asked Samuel and Peter to remain behind. The sanctuary was almost empty. He carried three simple wooden chairs into the centre aisle and arranged them facing one another.

The two men looked at each other with quiet curiosity.

Pastor Michael smiled gently before speaking.

“My brothers,” he said softly, “tonight I am not interested in what other people told you.”

He paused for a moment.

“I only want to hear what the two of you have actually said to each other.”

Silence settled over the empty sanctuary.

For the first time in many weeks, both men realised they had believed conversations that had never actually happened.

Story Continues

The three men remained seated in silence for several moments. Outside, the evening breeze moved gently through the open windows of the wooden sanctuary, carrying with it the distant sounds of children playing in the village below. Inside, no one seemed eager to speak first.

Pastor Michael finally smiled.

“Before either of you explains your side,” he said gently, “I’d like us to do something different.”

Samuel and Peter looked at him with curiosity.

“Samuel,” Pastor Michael continued, “I’d like Peter to speak first. Your responsibility is not to defend yourself. It is simply to listen. When Peter finishes, I want you to repeat back what you heard. Not what you think he meant. Not what you wish he had said. Simply what you heard.”

He turned to Peter.

“And Peter, you may only respond with one of two answers.”

“‘Yes, that is exactly what I meant,’ or, ‘No, let me explain it differently.’ Nothing else.”

Both men nodded quietly.

Peter took a deep breath.

“When people told me you thought I wasn’t committed to the outreach ministry, I felt hurt. Not because of the ministry itself, but because I believed after fifteen years you knew my heart. I left that meeting because Brother Luka had been seriously injured. I thought you understood why.”

Pastor Michael looked at Samuel.

“Now tell Peter what you heard.”

Samuel paused before answering.

“I heard you say you believed I questioned your commitment, and that what hurt you most was thinking I no longer trusted your heart after all these years.”

Peter looked at him thoughtfully.

“Almost,” he replied quietly. “It wasn’t only trust. It was that I felt our friendship had become less important than rumours.”

Samuel nodded slowly.

“Then let me try again.”

This time he spoke more carefully.

“You felt that instead of protecting our friendship, I allowed rumours to stand between us. What wounded you was not simply what people said. It was believing I never came to ask you whether any of it was true.”

Peter smiled for the first time that evening.

“Yes,” he said softly. “That is exactly what I meant.”

Pastor Michael did not interrupt. He simply nodded before turning toward Samuel.

“Now it is your turn.”

Samuel lowered his eyes for a moment.

“When people began telling me that you felt I was controlling the outreach ministry, I became disappointed. I respected you too much to believe you would speak against me, yet instead of asking you directly, I quietly began protecting myself. Every short conversation, every hurried meeting, every ordinary silence started confirming what I feared.”

Peter listened carefully.

Pastor Michael smiled gently.

“Now tell Samuel what you heard.”

Peter remained silent for a few moments before speaking.

“I heard that you were not angry with me. You were disappointed because you believed I no longer trusted you. Instead of asking me about it, you began watching everything through that disappointment until ordinary moments seemed to prove your fears.”

Samuel slowly nodded.

“Yes,” he whispered. “That is exactly what I meant.”

For several moments, no one spoke. The tension that had quietly grown over many weeks seemed to dissolve almost unnoticed. Nothing had changed about the original events. The outreach meeting had still ended late. Peter had still left early to visit the injured church member. Samuel had still coordinated the remaining plans.

The only thing that had changed was this.

For the first time in weeks, they had stopped listening to rumours and had finally begun listening to one another.

Pastor Michael quietly folded his hands.

“Brothers,” he said gently, “reconciliation rarely begins when someone wins an argument. It begins when someone finally feels understood.”

Neither Samuel nor Peter ever forgot those words.

Nor would the church.

Kingdom Insight

The conflict between Samuel and Peter did not begin with harsh words, betrayal, or deliberate wrongdoing. It began with assumptions. Neither man intended to damage their friendship, and neither desired division within the church. Yet both made the same mistake. They allowed the voices of others to become louder than the voice of the person they had known and trusted for many years. A friendship built over fifteen years was quietly weakened, not because truth had been spoken, but because truth had never been sought.

This is one of Satan’s oldest strategies. He often accomplishes far more through misunderstanding than through open persecution. A careless comment, an incomplete conversation, or an unverified report can plant a seed that gradually grows into suspicion. Once suspicion takes root, the human mind begins interpreting ordinary actions through the lens of imagined offences. A brief greeting suddenly appears cold. A delayed response feels intentional. Silence is interpreted as rejection. Before long, two people who sincerely love one another begin living as though they were opponents rather than fellow servants of Christ.

Pastor Michael understood that reconciliation requires more than bringing two people into the same room. It requires teaching them to listen. Most people believe they are listening when, in reality, they are preparing their defence. They hear enough to formulate a reply but not enough to understand the heart of the speaker. Genuine listening is different. It patiently seeks to understand before attempting to be understood. It asks questions instead of making assumptions. It values truth more than personal victory.

The exercise Pastor Michael introduced was simple, yet profoundly biblical. Before responding, each man had to repeat what the other had said until the speaker could honestly reply, “Yes, that is exactly what I meant.” Only then could the conversation move forward. For the first time in many weeks, Samuel and Peter were no longer arguing against rumours or defending themselves against assumptions. They were listening to one another’s hearts. Understanding replaced suspicion, and compassion began replacing disappointment.

The New Testament repeatedly calls believers to protect the unity of Christ’s Body. James urges us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. Paul appeals to the church to bear with one another in love, making every effort to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Jesus Himself teaches that when relationships are broken, His followers should pursue reconciliation rather than allow offence to grow. Biblical unity is not the absence of disagreement. It is the willingness to seek one another with humility, truth, grace, and forgiveness whenever disagreement arises.

Churches do not become strong because conflict never occurs. They become strong because believers know how to respond when conflict does occur. Mature disciples refuse to feed rumours, refuse to assume the worst, and refuse to allow misunderstanding to harden into bitterness. Instead, they courageously seek honest conversation, extending the same grace to others that Christ has so generously extended to them.

Seeing Life Through God’s Word

Samuel and Peter discovered that reconciliation did not begin when one of them apologised first. It began when each man finally understood the heart of the other. James teaches believers to listen carefully before speaking because words spoken without understanding often deepen wounds instead of healing them. God’s wisdom invites us to slow our reactions, examine our assumptions, and allow truth and grace to guide every conversation. Healthy churches are built by people who choose understanding over suspicion and reconciliation over resentment.

Exodus 38 describes the completion of the altar, basin, courtyard, and other parts of the tabernacle. It also records the careful accounting of the materials contributed by the people. This shows that God’s work requires both willing service and faithful stewardship. Every contribution mattered, and every responsibility had to be carried out with integrity for the benefit of the whole community.

Psalm 88 is an honest prayer from someone experiencing deep darkness, loneliness, and unanswered questions. It reminds us that members of the Body of Christ must not overlook those who are suffering quietly. The Church should become a place where people can express pain honestly, receive compassionate support, and know that they do not have to carry their burdens alone.

• Avoid allowing pride to prevent you from apologising or seeking forgiveness.
• Avoid listening only to prepare your response instead of understanding another person’s heart.
• Avoid allowing unresolved conflict to damage the unity of Christ’s Body.

Kingdom Action Step

Prayerfully examine your relationships. Is there someone with whom communication has become strained because of misunderstanding, disappointment, or assumptions? Rather than allowing silence to continue, ask God for the courage to initiate a gracious conversation. Approach that person with a desire to understand before seeking to be understood. Listen carefully, ask sincere questions, and resist the temptation to defend yourself too quickly. Let your goal be restoration rather than victory.

As you meet with your Discovery Bible Study group, family, or church leaders this week, practise intentional listening. Before responding to someone’s opinion or concern, summarise what you have heard and ask, “Have I understood you correctly?” This simple habit demonstrates respect, reduces misunderstanding, and creates an atmosphere where trust can flourish.

Prayer

Personal
Heavenly Father, thank You for reconciling me to Yourself through Jesus Christ. Thank You for extending grace to me even when I did not deserve it. Forgive me for the times I have allowed assumptions, pride, impatience, or unspoken disappointment to damage my relationships. Teach me to become quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. Give me the humility to seek understanding before drawing conclusions and the courage to begin difficult conversations when reconciliation is needed. Let my words reflect the gentleness, wisdom, and compassion of Christ so that I may become an instrument of peace wherever You place me.

For the Church
Lord Jesus, strengthen Your Church throughout the world. Protect us from gossip, suspicion, offence, misunderstanding, and every scheme that seeks to divide Your people. Help us to become communities where truth is spoken with love, forgiveness is offered generously, and relationships are restored quickly. May every congregation reflect the unity for which You prayed, so that the world may know that You were sent by the Father. Raise churches where believers choose humility over pride, understanding over accusation, and reconciliation over resentment.

For Church Leaders
Father, grant pastors, elders, deacons, and ministry leaders wisdom to shepherd Your people with patience and discernment. Help them recognise conflict before it grows into division and give them grace to guide difficult conversations with gentleness, truth, and biblical wisdom. May they model Christlike humility, becoming examples of peacemaking within the Body of Christ and equipping others to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Prayer for Papua New Guinea
Lord, we lift before You the churches and people of Papua New Guinea. Continue to strengthen believers across the towns, villages, mountains, and islands of the nation. Heal divisions wherever they exist, restore broken relationships within families and communities, and raise faithful disciple-makers who will demonstrate the love, humility, and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. May the Church throughout Papua New Guinea become a shining testimony of reconciliation and hope, drawing many people to faith in Christ.

Prayer for Oceania
Father, we pray for every nation and island throughout Oceania. Strengthen churches, encourage missionaries, protect Christian families, and raise servant-hearted leaders who faithfully proclaim the Gospel. Let disciple-making movements continue to multiply throughout the Pacific, bringing spiritual renewal, biblical unity, and transformed communities that reflect the Kingdom of God.

Prayer for the Unreached
Lord, remember every unreached people group throughout Oceania and across the nations of the earth. Open doors for the Gospel where access remains limited. Prepare hearts to receive Your Word, send labourers filled with the Holy Spirit into every community, and establish healthy disciple-making churches that will faithfully proclaim Christ from one generation to the next until every people group has had the opportunity to hear the Good News.

Today I choose to walk in the peace of Christ. I will listen with humility before I speak. I will seek truth before forming conclusions. I will refuse to believe rumours without seeking understanding. I will forgive as Christ has forgiven me. I will protect the unity of His Church.
