Big Question

What invisible borders have we built that God never intended to exist?

Story

Far from the busy capitals of Jakarta and Port Moresby, two villages stood only a few kilometres apart. One lay on the Indonesian side of the island of New Guinea, while the other belonged to Papua New Guinea. Between them stretched an international border marked by signs, checkpoints, and official maps. Visitors often assumed the line had always existed. The older villagers knew otherwise.

Long before governments established boundaries, the people of the two villages had traded together, celebrated births together, mourned losses together, and travelled freely through the forests that connected their communities. Many families still traced their ancestry to the same grandparents. Some spoke different official languages, yet they shared stories, customs, songs, and memories that no political map could erase.

As the years passed, however, crossing the border became increasingly uncommon. New regulations were introduced. Identification documents became necessary. Military patrols increased. Suspicion quietly replaced familiarity. Children who grew up on opposite sides of the border heard more about differences than about the friendships that had once united their grandparents. Before long, many young people regarded one another as foreigners despite sharing generations of common history.

The older generation found the change deeply saddening. They often recalled stories of market days when families crossed freely carrying vegetables, woven baskets, fish, and handmade tools. They remembered festivals where laughter filled the valley long before anyone thought about passports or immigration checkpoints. Their memories belonged to a different generation, one that understood that political boundaries need not become barriers between hearts.

One afternoon, heavy rains caused a river running through the valley to overflow its banks. Within hours, several homes on the Indonesian side were surrounded by rising water. Roads became impassable, communication was interrupted, and many families found themselves isolated. News of the flooding quickly reached the neighbouring village across the border.

The village leaders gathered to discuss what should be done. Some reminded everyone that crossing the border without official permission could create unnecessary complications. Others quietly observed that by the time formal approvals arrived, families might already have lost everything. The discussion grew increasingly tense as fear, responsibility, compassion, and uncertainty competed with one another.

Finally, an elderly man who had lived through the years before the border existed slowly stood to speak.

Looking around the room, he said quietly, “The river does not know which country it is flowing through. Why should compassion stop where the water does not?”

The room fell silent.

Story Continues

For several long moments, no one spoke. The elderly man’s words settled heavily upon the gathering. Everyone understood the practical challenges. Borders existed for legitimate reasons, and no one wished to create unnecessary difficulties for either community. Yet they also knew that families only a few kilometres away were watching floodwaters rise around their homes. Compassion was asking a question that regulations alone could not answer.

After careful discussion, the village leaders contacted the nearest border authorities and emergency officials. They explained the situation and requested permission for a coordinated humanitarian response. While the formal arrangements were being organised, villagers gathered blankets, drinking water, dried food, medicine, clothing, and simple tools. Canoes were prepared, tractors fuelled, and young volunteers stood ready to help wherever they were needed. Nobody asked first which tribe, language, or nationality the families belonged to. They simply saw neighbours facing a crisis.

As soon as clearance was granted, the volunteers crossed together under the supervision of local officials. The flood had left behind scenes of heartbreaking destruction. Homes built over many years stood partially submerged. Crops were ruined. Livestock had been swept away. Parents searched anxiously for missing belongings while children clung quietly to one another, uncertain about what would happen next. The disaster had erased many of the differences people had once considered so important. Every family was simply trying to survive.

For several days the two villages worked side by side. Meals were prepared in shared kitchens. Temporary shelters were erected. Wells were cleaned, damaged roofs repaired, and fallen trees cleared from the roads. Men, women, and young people laboured together from sunrise until evening. Conversations gradually replaced suspicion. Laughter slowly returned where fear had once dominated. Older villagers smiled as they watched young people forming friendships that their grandparents had once considered perfectly normal.

One afternoon, a teenage volunteer from the Indonesian village sat beside another young man from Papua New Guinea while they rested after repairing a damaged footbridge. They discovered that their great-grandmothers had been sisters. Neither had known the family connection until that conversation. Looking at the broken bridge they had just repaired, one of them quietly remarked, “It’s strange. We spent years believing the border made us different. It took a flood to remind us how much we still share.”

When the emergency had finally passed, government officials from both sides met with community leaders to review the response. They agreed that future disasters would require even closer cooperation, better communication, and stronger relationships between the neighbouring communities. Plans were developed for joint emergency training, information sharing, and coordinated relief efforts so that lives could be protected more effectively in the years ahead.

As the final volunteers prepared to return home, the elderly man who had first spoken during the village meeting stood once more beside the river. The floodwaters had begun to recede, leaving the valley remarkably peaceful. Watching children from both communities play together on the riverbank, he smiled gently and said, “Perhaps the greatest bridge we rebuilt this week was never made of timber.”

Nobody replied.

They did not need to.

Kingdom Insight

Borders serve important purposes. They define nations, establish responsibilities, protect communities, and provide order within the world. Throughout history they have shaped cultures, languages, governments, and identities. Yet while borders may define where one nation ends and another begins, they were never intended to determine how much we value another human being. Every person, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, language, or culture, bears the image of the same Creator.

The flood in today’s story revealed a truth that disasters often uncover. When people lose their homes, search for missing family members, or struggle simply to survive, the labels that usually separate us become far less important. Hunger does not recognise citizenship. Grief does not require a passport. Fear does not stop at immigration checkpoints. Human suffering reminds us of our shared humanity and calls forth the compassion that God has placed within His people.

The Gospel goes even further. Through Jesus Christ, God has accomplished something no political treaty, peace agreement, or international organisation could ever achieve. Paul reminds us in Ephesians that Christ Himself is our peace. Through His death and resurrection, He broke down the dividing wall of hostility that separated people from God and from one another. Those who were once strangers have become members of one household, united not by geography or ethnicity but by the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

This does not erase the uniqueness of nations or cultures. Scripture celebrates the diversity of peoples whom God has created. The vision of heaven includes every tribe, every language, every people, and every nation worshipping before the throne of God. The Kingdom does not remove diversity; it redeems it. Followers of Christ are therefore called to honour their own nation while also recognising that their deepest citizenship is found in the Kingdom of God.

The elderly man’s question challenged the villagers to think differently: “Why should compassion stop where the water does not?” The Gospel asks an even deeper question. If Christ crossed the infinite distance between heaven and earth to reconcile us to God, what barriers are we still unwilling to cross in order to love our neighbours? Sometimes the borders that most need crossing are not marked on maps but hidden within our own hearts. They are built from prejudice, suspicion, fear, pride, historical grievances, or indifference. Jesus invites us to become bridge-builders who carry His peace wherever He sends us.

This calling extends beyond international borders. Every community has invisible boundaries that separate rich from poor, educated from uneducated, young from old, insiders from outsiders, and people who feel accepted from those who feel forgotten. Wherever Christ’s disciples go, they are called to cross those barriers with humility, compassion, truth, and grace. We do not ignore our differences; we demonstrate that the love of Christ is greater than them.

Exploring Today’s Scriptures

Paul reminds believers that, before coming to Christ, they were separated from God and divided from one another. Through the Cross, Jesus reconciled us to the Father and created one new people united by grace. The dividing wall of hostility was broken down, making peace possible through His sacrifice.

The neighbouring villages discovered that compassion became stronger than suspicion when they chose to serve one another during crisis. Their cooperation did not erase national boundaries, but it showed that shared humanity is greater than inherited fear. In the same way, Christ calls His Church to demonstrate a unity the world cannot fully explain.

Leviticus 2 describes the grain offering presented to God with careful preparation and dedication, while Psalm 92 celebrates the goodness, faithfulness, and enduring works of the Lord. Together with Ephesians 2, these passages remind us that God is forming a worshipping people whose lives are marked by gratitude, holiness, peace, and unity across every culture and generation.

Commands to Obey

• Love your neighbour regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or culture.

• Avoid allowing prejudice to shape your relationships.
• Avoid judging people because of their nationality, tribe, language, or culture.
• Avoid building walls where Christ has built bridges.
• Avoid confusing political differences with personal hostility.
• Avoid allowing fear to replace compassion.
• Avoid remaining indifferent to the suffering of others.
• Avoid forgetting that every person bears the image of God.
• Avoid limiting God’s love to people who look, speak, or live like you.

Kingdom Action Step

Prayerfully consider whether there is a person or group of people you have quietly kept at a distance because they seem different from you. Ask the Lord to reveal any attitudes of prejudice, fear, or indifference that may have taken root within your heart. Invite Him to replace them with genuine love, humility, and compassion.

This week, intentionally reach across a boundary that normally separates people. It may involve welcoming someone from another culture, encouraging a neighbour from a different background, supporting a missionary, praying for another nation, or extending practical kindness to someone outside your usual circle of relationships. Every small act of love becomes a testimony that Christ has broken down the walls that divide humanity.

Prayer

Personal
Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing me into Your family through Jesus Christ. Thank You that the Cross has removed every barrier separating me from You. Forgive me for the times I have judged others by outward differences instead of seeing them as people created in Your image. Give me a heart that loves as You love, serves as You serve, and welcomes others with humility and grace. Make me an instrument of peace who reflects the reconciling power of the Gospel wherever I go.

For Indonesia and Papua New Guinea
Lord, we lift before You the peoples of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Bless their leaders with wisdom, strengthen communities living along their shared border, and grant peace, justice, and mutual understanding. Protect families, encourage churches, and raise disciple-makers who will faithfully proclaim Christ with humility, courage, and love. May the Gospel continue to unite people across every language, tribe, and culture.

For the Nations
Father, we pray for the nations of the world. Give wisdom to presidents, prime ministers, governors, legislators, judges, diplomats, military leaders, and all entrusted with authority. Help them pursue justice, protect the vulnerable, preserve peace, and govern with integrity. Raise believers within every sphere of society who will shine as ambassadors of Your Kingdom and demonstrate the love of Christ through faithful service.

For the Church Worldwide
Lord Jesus, strengthen Your Church across every continent. Remove divisions that hinder the advance of the Gospel. Unite believers across denominations, cultures, languages, and traditions around the truth of Your Word and the mission You have entrusted to us. Let the world see the reality of Christ through the unity, humility, and love demonstrated by Your people.

Prayer for the Unreached
Father, remember every unreached people group throughout the nations. Send labourers into every village, city, island, and remote community. Open doors for the Gospel where they remain closed, prepare hearts to receive Your Word, establish multiplying disciple-making movements, and hasten the day when people from every tribe, language, people, and nation will worship before Your throne.

Daily Declaration

Today I declare that Jesus Christ is my peace. Through His Cross He has reconciled me to God and made me part of His eternal family. I will not build walls where Christ has built bridges. I will love my neighbour, honour every person as one created in God’s image, and become an ambassador of reconciliation wherever He sends me. I will pray for the nations, serve with humility, and proclaim the Gospel without partiality. I will see like an eagle. I will lead like a lion. I will serve like Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
