Big Question

How often do we treat what hurts on the outside while overlooking what is breaking on the inside?

Story

Nestled in a quiet valley outside Thimphu stood a modest community health clinic that served several neighbouring villages. It was not a large medical centre, nor did it possess the latest equipment found in major hospitals. Yet it was known throughout the region for one reason. People trusted the doctor who worked there.

For more than twenty years, Dr. Tenzin Dorji had faithfully cared for the community. He was highly respected, remarkably knowledgeable, and rarely made mistakes. His diagnoses were accurate, his treatments were effective, and many families insisted on waiting for him rather than seeing another physician. Young medical students occasionally visited the clinic simply to observe his careful attention to detail and learn from his years of experience.

Every morning the waiting area filled before sunrise. Farmers arrived after tending their animals. Shopkeepers came before opening their businesses. Mothers carried young children wrapped warmly against the cool mountain air. Elderly couples quietly sat together while waiting for their turn. Dr. Dorji greeted nearly everyone by name, reviewed their symptoms carefully, examined them thoroughly, and prescribed whatever treatment was needed. By every measurable standard, he was an excellent doctor.

Yet over the years something began to trouble him. Certain patients returned again and again with different physical complaints. One month it was headaches. Another month persistent fatigue. Later it became stomach pain, sleepless nights, dizziness, or unexplained chest discomfort. Every examination suggested they were physically healthy. Laboratory tests repeatedly confirmed the same conclusion. The medicine relieved the symptoms for a while, but before long they returned carrying a different complaint.

At first Dr. Dorji assumed the illnesses had simply been difficult to diagnose. He ordered additional tests, consulted specialists, and carefully reviewed medical journals. Still, the pattern continued. The prescriptions changed, but the people kept returning. It was as though he was treating one illness while another remained hidden beneath the surface.

Everything changed one rainy afternoon when an elderly widow named Pema arrived at the clinic complaining of persistent headaches. Dr. Dorji completed the examination exactly as he had many times before. Her blood pressure was normal. Her heartbeat was steady. Every test appeared reassuring. As he reached for his prescription pad, Pema quietly remained seated without saying a word.

The silence lingered longer than usual.

Dr. Dorji slowly placed his pen back on the desk.

Then, instead of asking another medical question, he gently looked at her and said, “Pema… you’ve answered all my questions about your body. Would you tell me how your heart has been?”

The elderly woman lowered her eyes. Tears quietly filled them before she whispered, “Doctor… no one has asked me that since my husband died three years ago.”

For several moments neither of them spoke. The room became completely still as Dr. Dorji realised that for years he had become remarkably skilled at hearing symptoms, yet had often failed to hear suffering.

That brief conversation with Pema remained with Dr. Dorji long after the clinic had closed for the evening. As he drove home through the winding roads, he found himself replaying the silence that had filled the consulting room before she finally spoke. It was not the silence of uncertainty. It was the silence of someone who had been waiting a long time for permission to tell the truth. For years he had carefully listened to heartbeats through his stethoscope, yet he wondered how often he had failed to hear the quiet cries that no medical instrument could ever detect.

The following morning he opened the clinic as he always had. The waiting room was already full. Children coughed softly while sitting beside their parents, elderly villagers greeted one another warmly, and farmers patiently waited after finishing their early morning chores. Everything appeared perfectly ordinary, yet Dr. Dorji entered the consulting room with a different perspective. He resolved that before writing another prescription, he would first seek to understand the person sitting in front of him.

His first patient that day was a middle-aged shopkeeper who had visited the clinic several times during the previous six months complaining of stomach pains. Every examination had been normal. The medicines had offered only temporary relief. Instead of immediately asking where the pain was located, Dr. Dorji leaned forward and quietly said, “Tell me what has been happening in your life since I last saw you.”

The man looked surprised. For a few moments he seemed unsure how to respond. Then the words came rushing out. His business was failing. Debts had begun to accumulate. His eldest son wanted to leave school to help support the family. He had hardly slept for weeks because every night he worried about losing everything he had worked for. By the time he finished speaking, tears had replaced the tension that had been visible on his face when he first entered the room.

Later that same day, a young mother arrived complaining of persistent exhaustion. Her medical records showed no obvious illness. This time Dr. Dorji resisted the temptation to interrupt with more clinical questions. He simply listened. She explained that she had become the sole caregiver for both her ageing parents and her three young children after her husband accepted work in another district. She had not enjoyed a full night’s sleep in almost a year. What appeared to be physical weakness was, in reality, the weight of relentless responsibility.

As the weeks passed, Dr. Dorji noticed something remarkable. His medical practice had not become less scientific; it had become more complete. Patients still received careful examinations, appropriate tests, and effective treatment, but they also experienced something they had quietly longed for. They felt heard. Many discovered that speaking honestly about their fears, grief, loneliness, or anxiety became the first step toward healing. Some still needed medicine. Others needed practical support from family members or neighbours. A few simply needed someone to acknowledge that the burden they carried was real.

News of the small clinic spread throughout the surrounding communities. Interestingly, people did not travel there because Dr. Dorji possessed extraordinary medicines unavailable elsewhere. They came because they believed they would be treated with dignity. Villagers often said, “The doctor never rushes you.” Others remarked, “He remembers what you told him last time.” Some simply smiled and said, “He listens.”

One afternoon, a young medical student completing her community placement asked Dr. Dorji what she considered to be the secret of his success. She expected him to speak about advanced diagnostic techniques or years of clinical experience. Instead, he walked to the window overlooking the waiting area where dozens of people sat patiently waiting their turn.

After watching them quietly for a moment, he smiled and said, “Medical school taught me how to recognise disease. Life has been teaching me how to recognise people. Never forget that patients are not illnesses with names attached to them. They are people whose illnesses have become part of their story. If you only treat the disease, you may help them recover. If you care for the person, you may help them heal.”

The young student carried those words with her for the rest of her career. Years later she would struggle to remember many of the lectures she had attended at university, but she never forgot the lesson she learned in a small clinic in Bhutan. The most powerful instrument in a healer’s hands is not always found inside a medical bag. Sometimes it is a compassionate heart that has learned to listen before it speaks.

Kingdom Insight

Dr. Dorji’s greatest discovery was not a new medicine or a better medical procedure. It was the realisation that every patient carried a story as well as a symptom. For many years he had carefully diagnosed diseases while unknowingly overlooking the burdens that often lay beneath them. His growing ability to listen did not replace good medicine; it made his medical care more complete because he began seeing people instead of merely treating conditions.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus demonstrated this same pattern. He never reduced people to their visible problems. Blind Bartimaeus was more than a blind man. Zacchaeus was more than a dishonest tax collector. The woman who touched His garment was more than a long-term medical case. The paralytic lowered through the roof was more than a man who could not walk. Jesus consistently looked beyond the outward condition to the deeper needs of the human heart. He understood that true healing often begins where no one else is looking.

When the paralysed man was brought before Jesus, the crowd expected only one outcome. They believed his greatest need was physical healing. Yet before Jesus restored his body, He spoke words of forgiveness. To many people present, that seemed unexpected, perhaps even unnecessary. But Jesus knew that human beings are more than bodies requiring treatment. We are spiritual, emotional, relational, and physical beings created in the image of God. Our deepest need is always reconciliation with Him, and from that relationship flows healing that touches every other area of life.

This truth extends far beyond healthcare. Parents sometimes focus so intensely on correcting behaviour that they never ask what pain may be producing it. Employers measure productivity without recognising discouragement or exhaustion. Churches celebrate attendance while overlooking loneliness. Communities respond to visible crises but often miss the hidden grief that quietly shapes people’s lives. Like Dr. Dorji before his transformation, we can become highly efficient at solving problems while failing to understand the people living behind those problems.

Listening with compassion does not mean we always have immediate solutions. It does mean that we are willing to slow down, pay attention, and value people above the issues they present. Sometimes God uses practical help. Sometimes He provides wisdom, encouragement, correction, or comfort. At other times, the greatest gift we can offer is our attentive presence. Many hurting people begin healing not because every problem has disappeared, but because someone finally cared enough to hear their story without rushing to judgement.

As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to follow His example. We are not merely problem-solvers; we are people-lovers. We are not called simply to fix situations but to walk with people toward Christ. Every conversation becomes an opportunity to reflect His compassion. Every act of patient listening becomes a testimony that God sees, knows, and cares for those who are carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone.

Exploring Today’s Scriptures

The friends who carried the paralysed man to Jesus believed they were bringing him for physical healing, and their faith was richly rewarded. Yet Jesus first addressed the man’s spiritual need by declaring his sins forgiven. In doing so, He revealed that God’s work in our lives reaches deeper than what human eyes can see. The miracle that followed demonstrated His authority over both sin and sickness, reminding us that Christ alone brings complete restoration.

Dr. Dorji’s experience echoes that same principle. His patients often arrived describing pain in their bodies, but many were also carrying grief, fear, loneliness, anxiety, or exhaustion that medicine alone could not remove. As he learned to listen more carefully, he discovered that compassionate presence often opened the door to deeper healing, stronger relationships, and practical support from family and community.

Exodus 40 records the completion and setting up of the tabernacle exactly as God commanded. When the work was finished, the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle and His presence guided Israel throughout their journey. This reminds us that when every member faithfully fulfils their responsibility, the Church becomes a place where God’s presence is honoured and His people are guided together.

Psalm 90 reflects on the brevity of human life and asks God to teach His people to number their days wisely. It reminds believers to use their time, gifts, and opportunities faithfully, depending upon God to establish the work of their hands. Every member of Christ’s Body should serve with purpose, humility, and an awareness that our labour has lasting value when it is surrendered to Him.

• Avoid reducing people to their problems or circumstances.
• Avoid offering quick answers to deep wounds.
• Avoid becoming too busy to notice those who are quietly hurting.
• Avoid judging people whose pain you do not fully understand.
• Avoid ignoring emotional and spiritual needs while focusing only on outward concerns.
• Avoid allowing routine to replace genuine compassion.
• Avoid forgetting that every person is created in the image of God.

Kingdom Action Step

Prayerfully think about someone who has been carrying a difficult season of life. Rather than immediately trying to solve their problems, arrange time to simply be present with them. Listen without interrupting, resist the temptation to compare their experience with your own, and allow them the freedom to express what they are feeling. Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer is not advice but compassionate presence that reflects the love of Christ.

As you move through this week, ask the Holy Spirit to help you become more attentive to people whose pain is hidden behind ordinary conversations. There may be a colleague whose smile conceals discouragement, a neighbour who quietly carries loneliness, or a family member who has been waiting for someone to notice their struggle. Ask God to make you an instrument of His comfort and encouragement.

Prayer

Personal
Heavenly Father, thank You for knowing me completely and loving me without condition. You understand every burden I carry, even those I struggle to express in words. Forgive me for the times I have been too quick to speak, too eager to fix problems, or too distracted to notice the pain of others. Teach me to become more like Jesus, who always saw beyond appearances and responded with truth, compassion, and grace. Give me a listening heart that reflects Your love wherever You send me.

For Families and Communities
Lord, strengthen families, neighbourhoods, churches, and communities to become places where people feel safe to share their struggles without fear of rejection. Raise men and women who are willing to walk alongside those who are hurting, offering encouragement, wisdom, and practical support. Let compassion replace indifference and understanding overcome judgement so that Your love may be clearly seen through Your people.

Father, we pray for the people of Bhutan. Bless its communities, healthcare workers, families, educators, and leaders. Strengthen believers who faithfully follow Christ, and open doors for the Gospel throughout the nation. Raise disciple-makers who demonstrate Your compassion through humble service, faithful witness, and lives that reflect the character of Jesus. May many come to know the hope that is found only in Him.

For South Asia
Lord, continue to move throughout South Asia. Encourage Your Church, protect those who face hardship because of their faith, and empower believers to share the Gospel with wisdom, courage, and love. Let communities throughout the region experience the transforming power of Christ as hearts are healed, relationships restored, and disciples multiplied.

Prayer for the Unreached
Father, remember every unreached people group across South Asia and throughout the world. Send faithful labourers who will proclaim the Good News with humility, compassion, and perseverance. Prepare hearts to receive Your Word, establish healthy disciple-making communities, and let every nation, tribe, and language hear the message of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Today I choose to see people as Christ sees them. I will listen with patience, respond with compassion, and walk with humility. I will not judge people by what I see on the outside but will remember that God alone knows every heart. I will become an instrument of comfort, hope, and healing wherever the Lord leads me. I will see like an eagle. I will lead like a lion. I will serve like Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
