BOOK 2 β€” LISTENING
Hearing God. Loving People. Responding in Obedience.

See Like an Eagle.
Lead Like a Lion.
Serve Like Christ.

Theme

Listening before acting.

Big Question

What happens when experience, position, or pressure causes us to stop listening carefully?

Story

Dr. Aamir Rahman had learned to make decisions quickly. In the emergency department of a large hospital in Lahore, hesitation could cost lives. Patients arrived with injuries from road accidents, complications from untreated illnesses, high fevers, breathing problems, heart pain, childbirth emergencies, and fears their families could barely explain. By the time Aamir became a senior doctor, younger doctors admired his speed, nurses trusted his judgment, and families often felt reassured simply because he walked into the room.

That Monday morning, the hospital was already stretched beyond capacity before the boy arrived. The waiting area was crowded. Two nurses had called in sick. A transformer fault had interrupted power earlier in the day, and the backup system was carrying more than it should. A road accident had brought in several patients at once, and the ward was filled with the sound of hurried footsteps, anxious relatives, ringing phones, and doctors calling for results. Everyone was moving. Everyone was needed somewhere.

Then a woman entered carrying her eight-year-old son. Her name was Mrs. Farah Siddiqui, and the boy’s name was Yusuf. At first glance, Yusuf looked like many children Aamir had seen during fever season. His body was hot, his eyes were heavy, and his mother’s face carried the tired fear of someone who had not slept all night. A junior doctor had already written the first notes: fever, vomiting, weakness, no obvious injury, no breathing distress. Aamir scanned the chart, examined the boy quickly, and asked the usual questions.

β€œWhen did it start?” he asked.

β€œYesterday evening,” Farah replied. β€œBut this morning he changed.”

Aamir looked up briefly. β€œChanged how?”

Farah looked at her son, then back at the doctor. β€œHe is not himself. He looks at me as if he wants to answer, but the words are not coming properly. He knows me, but somehow he is far away.”

Aamir had heard similar descriptions many times. Parents often became frightened when fever made children weak, confused, or unusually quiet. He checked Yusuf’s temperature, pulse, chest, abdomen, hydration, and pupils. Nothing immediately contradicted the common explanation forming in his mind. Most likely a severe infection. Possibly malaria or typhoid. Tests would clarify. Fluids would help. Medication would begin. The case needed attention, but it did not yet appear unusual.

β€œWe will start treatment and run tests,” he said. β€œLet us monitor him closely.”

Farah nodded, but her face did not relax. β€œDoctor, please check him again. I know my son. This is not ordinary fever.”

Aamir heard the words, but he was already thinking about the next patient. A man with chest pain was waiting. The road accident victims still needed follow-up. A lab technician was asking for clarification. A nurse needed approval for medication. The whole department seemed to be leaning on him at once.

β€œMadam, we are checking him,” he said, not unkindly, but with the firmness of someone trying to keep order. β€œPlease allow us to do our work.”

For the next hour, Aamir moved from bed to bed. He reviewed reports, corrected prescriptions, answered calls, and gave instructions. When he passed Yusuf’s bed again, Farah was still standing beside him, one hand resting gently on his shoulder. Her lips moved silently. Perhaps she was praying. Perhaps she was repeating his name. Perhaps she was trying to keep herself from crying.

Then she called him again. β€œDoctor, please.”

Aamir returned to the bedside. Yusuf looked drowsy. His fever remained high. His breathing was stable. Nothing appeared dramatic enough to justify the urgency in his mother’s voice.

β€œFever does not come down immediately,” Aamir explained. β€œWe have started treatment.”

Farah shook her head. β€œIt is not only the fever. He is not hearing me properly.”

Something about that sentence should have slowed Aamir down, but pressure has a way of making people selective listeners. He heard the anxiety. He heard the emotion. He did not yet hear the warning. To him, the mother sounded like many frightened parents. To her, the doctor sounded like many busy professionals who had already decided before truly listening.

β€œDoctor,” she said quietly, β€œyou are hearing me, but you are not listening.”

The words struck him with unexpected force. For a moment, Aamir almost defended himself. He had trained for years. He was carrying responsibility for many lives. He was not careless. He was not ignoring the boy. Yet before he could answer, Yusuf made a small sound and turned his face slightly away from the light above the bed. It was a tiny movement, almost nothing, but this time Aamir saw it differently.

He stopped.

Not because the ward became quiet. It did not. Not because the pressure disappeared. It remained. He stopped because, for the first time since Yusuf arrived, he allowed the mother’s concern to interrupt his conclusion.

Aamir bent closer and called the boy’s name. Yusuf’s eyes moved, but slowly. Too slowly. His neck was not freely relaxed. His responses were delayed. The complaint about light now mattered. The mother’s description of confusion now mattered. The unusual silence now mattered. What had looked like ordinary fever began to rearrange itself into something more serious.

He asked Farah to repeat the story from the beginning, slowly this time. She described the vomiting, the headache, the strange speech before dawn, the way Yusuf had stared at her as though he understood but could not respond. Aamir listened without interrupting. Within minutes, the entire direction of care changed. Tests were escalated. Treatment was adjusted. A consultant was called. Yusuf was moved for urgent management.

By evening, the danger was not over, but the team knew they had acted in time. Farah sat near the intensive care entrance, exhausted, her scarf loose around her shoulders, her hands clasped tightly together. Aamir stood nearby, holding a file he had already read twice. He wanted to say something professional, something reassuring, something that would restore the distance between doctor and family. Instead, he remained silent.

Farah looked up at him and said, β€œThank you for listening.”

Aamir wanted to believe he had listened from the beginning, but the truth would not allow it. He had heard her from the beginning. He had not listened from the beginning. There was a difference, and that difference had nearly mattered more than all his training.

That night, long after his shift ended, Aamir sat in his car outside the hospital and could not bring himself to start the engine. The city moved around him. Motorcycles passed. Vendors called out. Horns sounded from the road. Lahore was alive with noise, but inside him one sentence kept returning: β€œYou are hearing me, but you are not listening.”

He thought about doctors, nurses, teachers, pastors, parents, presidents, judges, CEOs, and community leaders. He thought about how easily responsibility can become deafness when people begin to trust their position more than truth. He thought about how many people suffer because someone with authority hears complaints but not pain, hears reports but not reality, hears words but not warning. He also thought about God, and how often people ask Him to speak while refusing to listen to the people He has placed around them.

Yusuf recovered slowly. Not instantly. Not easily. But steadily. When he was finally discharged, Farah brought him to the nurses’ station to say goodbye. Yusuf was thinner than before, but his eyes were clear. He held a small drawing in his hand. It showed a doctor, a mother, a hospital bed, and a boy smiling under a bright yellow sun. At the bottom, in uneven handwriting, he had written: β€œThank you for helping me.”

Aamir kept that drawing in his office for years. Not because it praised him, but because it humbled him. Whenever he became too busy, too certain, or too quick to conclude, he looked at it and remembered that listening is not weakness. Listening is love paying attention. Listening is humility slowing down. Listening is responsibility refusing to rush past the human being in front of you.

From that day forward, before making important decisions, Aamir began asking one question: β€œWhat am I not hearing?” Sometimes he asked nurses. Sometimes he asked junior doctors. Sometimes he asked patients. Sometimes he asked families. Sometimes, before entering the next room, he asked God.

Years later, when he trained young doctors, he told them, β€œYou must learn to read charts, scans, symptoms, and test results. Learn them well. But never forget to listen to people. A mother may not know the medical name for what is wrong, but she may know something has changed. A nurse may not have your title, but she may have noticed what you missed. A patient may not understand your diagnosis, but he can still tell you where it hurts. And above all, listen to God, because skill without humility can harm people, but skill surrendered to God can become an instrument of mercy.”

Perhaps God is asking us the same question today: Who has been speaking around you that you have heard but not truly listened to?

Reflecting on the Story

  • What part of today’s story stayed with you the longest?
  • Which person did you identify with most: Dr. Aamir, Yusuf, Farah, the nurses, or someone else?
  • Have you ever been in a position where someone tried to tell you something important, but you did not truly listen?
  • Have you ever been the person speaking, but others dismissed your concern?
  • What does this story reveal about the danger of pride, pressure, experience, or position?
  • What do you think changed in Dr. Aamir when he finally slowed down?
  • What area of your life requires you to ask, β€œWhat am I not hearing?”

Today’s Bible Reading

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 5

Personal Journey β€” Full Bible Track:
Exodus 19
Psalm 69

Discovery Questions

  • What does today’s reading teach us about God?
  • What does today’s reading teach us about people?
  • Is there a command to obey?
  • Is there a promise to believe?
  • Is there a warning to heed?
  • Is there a sin to avoid?
  • Is there an example to follow?
  • What is God saying to you personally today?

Reflecting on Scripture

In 1 Corinthians 5, Paul addresses a serious matter that the church had failed to confront. The issue was not merely that sin existed among them. The deeper danger was that the community had become careless about what God called holy. They had heard the truth, but they had not responded with obedience.

In Exodus 19, God prepares His people to meet Him at Sinai. They are called to consecration, reverence, and obedience. Listening to God was not casual. It required preparation of heart and life.

Psalm 69 gives voice to distress, rejection, zeal, and dependence on God. It reminds us that people in pain are not always silent because they have nothing to say. Sometimes they are waiting for someone to listen.

  • What verse stood out most to you today?
  • Why do you think that verse caught your attention?
  • What do you sense God may be saying through today’s reading?
  • What area of your life might God be addressing?
  • Is there something He wants you to start doing?
  • Is there something He wants you to stop doing?
  • Is there someone He wants you to encourage?
  • Is there someone He wants you to forgive?
  • Is there a step of faith He is inviting you to take?

Bringing the Story and Scripture Together

Dr. Aamir’s greatest challenge was not a lack of medical knowledge. It was the temptation to let experience become louder than the voice of a concerned mother. His knowledge was valuable, but his willingness to slow down and truly listen became even more valuable.

Today’s Scriptures reveal the same principle from different perspectives. In 1 Corinthians 5, Paul challenges the church because they knew God’s truth but failed to respond to it. In Exodus 19, God calls His people to prepare themselves to hear and obey Him. Psalm 69 reminds us that God hears the cries of those who are hurting, even when others overlook them.

Listening is one of the clearest expressions of love. Jesus taught that the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and the second is to love our neighbour as ourselves. We cannot honestly say we are listening to God while refusing to listen to the people He has placed around us. The way we respond to people often reveals how seriously we take God’s voice.

Dr. Aamir nearly missed what mattered most because pressure, experience, and responsibility competed with compassion. The turning point came when he chose humility over assumption. That same choice confronts every one of usβ€”whether we are parents, teachers, doctors, pastors, business leaders, government officials, or students.

Today’s Connecting Question:
Where is God inviting you to listen more carefullyβ€”to Him, and to someone He has placed in your life today?

Commands to Obey

  • Love God by listening to His Word and responding in obedience.
  • Love people by listening before speaking or making conclusions.
  • Treat every person with dignity, regardless of their position, education, age, or background.
  • Remain teachable, even when you are experienced or hold authority.
  • Be willing to pause, ask questions, and seek understanding before making important decisions.
  • Respond to God’s correction with humility and without delay.
  • Allow your love for God to be demonstrated by the way you serve people.

Things to Avoid

  • Avoid allowing position, success, or experience to make you unteachable.
  • Avoid hearing words without understanding the heart behind them.
  • Avoid making assumptions before listening carefully.
  • Avoid ignoring correction because it comes from someone with less authority.
  • Avoid becoming too busy to notice the needs of people.
  • Avoid separating your love for God from your treatment of people.
  • Avoid delaying obedience when God has made His will clear.

Kingdom Action Step

Prayerfully ask God to show you one person you have not been listening to well.

Today, give that person your full attention. Listen without interrupting, defending yourself, or preparing your response. Ask God to help you hear not only their words but also their heart.

Then spend a few quiet moments asking the Lord, “Father, what are You trying to teach me through this person?” Write down what you sense He is showing you and act on it.

Prayer

Personal
Heavenly Father, thank You because You are a God who hears. Teach me to become a person who listens as You listen. Remove pride, impatience, distraction, and assumptions from my heart. Help me to hear Your voice through Your Word, obey Your Spirit without hesitation, and recognize what You may be saying through the people You bring into my life. Let my listening produce love, humility, wisdom, and faithful obedience.

Family
Lord, strengthen our families by teaching us to listen to one another with patience, kindness, and understanding. Heal relationships that have been damaged because people stopped listening. May our homes become places where truth is spoken in love and where every person feels valued and heard.

Oceania, Asia & the Middle East
Father, throughout Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, raise leaders, professionals, parents, pastors, educators, healthcare workers, business leaders, and public servants who fear You and genuinely care for the people they serve. Give them humble hearts that listen wisely, pursue justice, protect the vulnerable, and lead with compassion and integrity.

Prayer for Pakistan
Lord, we lift Pakistan before You today. Pour out Your peace upon its people. Grant wisdom to government leaders, integrity to public servants, compassion to healthcare workers, courage to believers, and hope to families. Open doors for the Gospel, strengthen Your Church, and raise men and women who will love You wholeheartedly and serve their neighbours faithfully.

Prayer for the Unreached
Father, we remember the millions across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East who have never had the opportunity to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ. Send labourers into every city, village, island, and people group. Prepare hearts to receive Your Word, reveal Yourself through Scripture, dreams, relationships, and faithful witnesses, and draw many into Your Kingdom.

Daily Declaration

Today I choose to listen with humility.
I will not allow pride to close my ears.
I will not allow pressure to harden my heart.
I will hear God through His Word.
I will listen to people with love.
I will respond to truth with obedience.
I will correct what must be corrected.
I will serve where God places me.
I will see like an eagle.
I will lead like a lion.
I will serve like Christ.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.
