How dangerous is it to make decisions before listening to the whole story?
Justice Arvind Mehra had spent most of his adult life listening to people argue. Lawyers argued about evidence. Families argued about inheritance. Business partners argued about contracts. Police officers argued about procedure. Witnesses argued with memory. Defendants argued with accusations. Sometimes even silence seemed to argue in his courtroom, especially when someone had already lost hope before the hearing began.
After twenty-four years on the bench, he had developed a reputation across the High Court in Delhi. He was disciplined, punctual, prepared, and famously difficult to mislead. Lawyers knew better than to enter his courtroom without reading their files. He disliked delays, disliked theatrics, and disliked what he called “unnecessary noise.” To him, justice required clarity. Facts mattered. Procedure mattered. Time mattered. If a case could be decided, it should not be allowed to wander endlessly through adjournments and excuses.
On the morning the case of State versus Imran Qureshi came before him, Justice Mehra expected nothing unusual. The matter involved an alleged robbery at a jewellery shop in Old Delhi. The accused was a twenty-three-year-old mechanic who worked in a small repair shop near Jama Masjid. According to the prosecution, he had entered the shop with two other men shortly before closing time, threatened the owner, and escaped with cash and several gold chains. One suspect remained at large. Another had allegedly identified Imran during questioning. The police file included witness statements, recovered property, and what appeared to be a confession.
Everything about the file suggested a straightforward case.
Imran stood quietly beside his lawyer when the matter was called. He was thin, nervous, and younger-looking than his age. His shirt had been carefully ironed but was worn at the collar. He kept his hands clasped in front of him and looked at the floor more often than at the judge. His mother sat in the back row, her dupatta pulled close around her face, whispering prayers under her breath. His younger sister sat beside her, clutching a plastic folder filled with documents no one had yet asked to see.
The prosecutor was confident. The shop owner had identified Imran. A stolen chain had allegedly been recovered from a room where he sometimes slept. Most importantly, the police had recorded a confession. The defence lawyer, a tired legal aid advocate handling too many matters in one morning, argued that the confession was unreliable and that the recovery was questionable. But his arguments lacked force. He seemed underprepared, and the documents in his file were arranged in the desperate disorder of someone who had received the brief late.
Justice Mehra listened carefully, or at least he believed he did. He asked several questions. The prosecutor answered smoothly. The defence hesitated. The police officer repeated what was in the report. The shop owner insisted he was certain. By noon, the direction of the case seemed clear. There were details to settle, but the weight of evidence appeared to lean heavily against the accused.
Then the interpreter shifted in her chair.
Her name was Mrs. Leela Menon. She had worked around courtrooms for more than thirty years, translating when witnesses, defendants, or families struggled with Hindi, Urdu, English, Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, or whatever mixture of languages life brought into Delhi’s legal system. She was not dramatic. She was not easily impressed. Most days, lawyers barely noticed her unless they needed her. Judges respected her quietly, the way busy systems respect people who make difficult work possible without demanding attention.
Justice Mehra noticed her only because she looked troubled.
At first, he ignored it. The arguments continued. The prosecutor referred again to the confession. The defence objected weakly. The police officer repeated that the accused had admitted involvement voluntarily. Imran looked confused, but many defendants looked confused in court. Fear often produced that expression. So did guilt. So did poverty. So did the simple fact of standing before a system whose language could swallow a person whole.
Justice Mehra began making notes for his order.
That was when Mrs. Menon stood.
The movement was so unusual that the courtroom quieted before she spoke. Interpreters did not normally interrupt proceedings unless asked to translate. Lawyers turned toward her. The prosecutor frowned. The defence lawyer looked startled, as though even he had forgotten she was there.
“Your Lordship,” she said carefully, “before the Court proceeds further, may I request permission to clarify something?”
Justice Mehra looked over his glasses. “Clarify what, Mrs. Menon?”
She hesitated. “It concerns the accused.”
The prosecutor rose immediately. “My Lord, the interpreter is not a witness in this matter.”
“I am aware,” Justice Mehra replied. His eyes remained on Mrs. Menon. “What do you wish to say?”
She turned slightly toward Imran, then back to the bench. “My Lord, during today’s proceedings, I have observed that the accused does not appear to understand several parts of what has been said in Hindi or English. When I spoke to him briefly in Urdu, he responded, but even then, his dialect is not standard Delhi Urdu. It appears he is most comfortable in a regional dialect from eastern Uttar Pradesh.”
The prosecutor frowned. “My Lord, this is irrelevant. The accused signed his statement.”
Mrs. Menon did not look at the prosecutor. “That is what concerns me.”
The courtroom became still.
Justice Mehra leaned back. “Explain.”
Mrs. Menon spoke slowly now, choosing every word with care. “If the accused did not properly understand the questions put to him, or the statement read before him, then the Court may need to examine whether the confession was truly understood before it was signed. I am not saying what happened. I am only saying there may be a language issue that has not been addressed.”
A murmur moved through the courtroom. Imran’s mother covered her mouth. His sister began searching through the plastic folder in her lap with trembling hands. The defence lawyer suddenly became alert, as though someone had opened a window in a room he had not realized was suffocating.
Justice Mehra looked at Imran directly for the first time that morning, not as a file, not as an accused person, not as another matter on a crowded list, but as a young man whose future might depend on whether anyone had truly heard him. He asked Mrs. Menon to speak with him in the dialect she believed he understood best. The exchange was brief, but its effect was immediate. Imran’s posture changed. His eyes lifted. Words came faster. Confusion gave way to urgency.
Through the interpreter, he said he had not understood much of what the police had asked during the first interview. He said he had signed papers because he was afraid. He said he could not read English properly. He said he had told them he repaired a scooter near the jewellery shop that week, but he had not entered the shop. He said the room where the chain was found was shared by several workers who slept there when work ran late. He said nobody had called the shop owner’s assistant, who knew him by sight because he repaired machines in the lane.
The defence lawyer opened the plastic folder Imran’s sister had brought. Inside were receipts from the repair shop, a handwritten note from the shop owner where Imran worked, and the name of a security guard who had seen him elsewhere near the time of the robbery. None of it proved innocence immediately, but it proved something important: the story had not been fully heard.
Justice Mehra adjourned the matter and ordered further review. He directed that the accused be provided proper interpretation in all future proceedings. He required the investigating officer to explain how the confession had been recorded and whether the accused understood the language used. He ordered the defence to examine the additional documents and permitted the calling of further witnesses. The prosecutor objected, but less confidently than before.
Weeks passed before the fuller picture emerged. The case against Imran weakened. The so-called confession had been poorly recorded. The recovery was doubtful. The missing assistant from the jewellery shop confirmed that Imran had been known in the area as a mechanic, not as one of the men who entered the shop that night. The security guard’s statement raised serious questions about timing. Eventually, the court found that the evidence was insufficient to convict him.
When the decision was delivered, Imran’s mother wept without sound. His sister pressed the plastic folder against her chest as though it had become something sacred. Imran stood motionless, unable to understand everything until Mrs. Menon translated the result. Then he covered his face with both hands.
Justice Mehra watched quietly.
For most people in the courtroom, the case ended that day. For him, it did not. Long after the lawyers left and the next matters were called, he kept thinking about how close the system had come to swallowing a young man because everyone believed they had heard enough. The prosecutor had heard the police. The police had heard what they expected to hear. The defence had heard too little. The judge had almost heard only the file. And the interpreter, the person with the least authority in the room, had heard what everyone else missed.
That evening, Justice Mehra remained in his chambers after the staff had gone. Delhi’s traffic hummed beyond the courthouse walls. Files waited on his desk. More cases would come tomorrow. More arguments. More accusations. More people hoping the system would not reduce their lives to paperwork.
He opened a small notebook he rarely used and wrote a sentence across the page.
Justice must listen before it speaks.
He sat with the sentence for a long time.
Years later, when he addressed young judges at a training programme, he told them about the case without using names. He spoke about procedure, evidence, language, poverty, and the danger of confidence that has not made room for humility. Then he said something they did not forget.
“The most dangerous judgments are not always made by corrupt people. Sometimes they are made by busy people, proud people, tired people, or experienced people who believe they have already heard enough.”
He paused before adding, “Never forget the quiet voice at the edge of the room. Sometimes that voice is the last witness truth has left.”
Perhaps God is asking us the same question today: Before you judge a person, a situation, a family, a leader, a child, a nation, or even yourself, have you listened to the whole story?

Psalm 71
Exodus 21 reminds us that God cares deeply about justice. Even in a society very different from ours, He established laws that protected life, restrained abuse, and held people accountable for their actions. Justice has always mattered to God because every human being is created in His image.
In 1 Corinthians 7, Paul repeatedly encourages believers to remain faithful to God’s calling wherever they are. Whether married or single, free or enslaved, every believer belongs to Christ and is called to honour Him in daily life. Obedience begins by listening to God’s voice above every other influence.
Psalm 71 is the prayer of someone who trusts God to defend, rescue, and uphold him. It reminds us that the Lord is a righteous Judge who never overlooks the innocent and never ignores those who cry out to Him.
Justice Mehra almost made a life-changing decision based on what appeared to be sufficient evidence. Nothing seemed obviously wrong until one quiet voice asked permission to speak. That single moment changed the entire direction of the case.
God’s Word consistently reminds us that justice requires patience, humility, and truth. Exodus teaches us that justice is not merely about punishment; it is about protecting people and doing what is right. Paul reminds believers that every area of life belongs to Christ, including the decisions we make about others. The Psalmist encourages us to trust the Lord because He alone judges perfectly.
Many broken relationships, divided churches, damaged families, and unfair decisions happen because people stop listening too soon. We hear rumours instead of facts. We judge motives instead of asking questions. We react before seeking understanding. Love, however, is patient enough to listen, humble enough to ask, and wise enough to wait before reaching conclusions.

Before the day ends, pray for wisdom and ask yourself, “Have I truly heard the whole story?” If appropriate, have a respectful conversation that seeks understanding rather than proving yourself right.
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you become someone known for fairness, humility, and compassion.

Heavenly Father, thank You because You are perfectly just and perfectly loving. Forgive me for the times I have judged too quickly, spoken too soon, or failed to listen carefully. Give me a humble heart that seeks truth above convenience and wisdom above assumptions. Help me to hear Your voice clearly and treat every person with dignity, fairness, and compassion.
Family
Lord, strengthen our families by teaching us to communicate with honesty and patience. Help us to listen before reacting, to forgive before bitterness grows, and to seek understanding instead of making assumptions. Let our homes become places where truth and grace walk together.

Father, we pray for judges, lawyers, police officers, investigators, interpreters, public servants, and everyone involved in the administration of justice throughout Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. Give them wisdom, integrity, courage, and compassion. Protect them from corruption, prejudice, fear, and injustice, and help them to serve with humility and truth.

Lord, we lift India before You today. Bless its leaders, courts, schools, families, churches, and communities. Raise men and women of integrity who will pursue justice, defend the vulnerable, and serve the nation with humility. Open doors for the Gospel, strengthen believers, and reveal the love of Christ to millions who have not yet come to know Him.
Prayer for the Unreached
Father, we remember the many unreached peoples across India and throughout Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East. Send faithful labourers into every village, town, city, and language group. Open hearts to receive the Good News of Jesus Christ, and establish multiplying communities of disciples who will faithfully make disciples of others.
Today I choose wisdom over assumptions.
I will listen before I judge.
I will seek truth before I speak.
I will honour every person as someone created in the image of God.
I will not ignore the quiet voices around me.
I will walk in humility.
I will pursue justice with compassion.
I will obey God’s voice above every other voice.
I will see like an eagle.
I will lead like a lion.
I will serve like Christ.
In Jesus’ name.
