How many relationships have been damaged because people believed assumptions instead of asking questions?
The argument began before their father’s funeral had even ended.
Outside the cremation grounds in Bengaluru, family members and neighbours gathered beneath large rain trees while waiting for the final prayers to conclude. Some quietly comforted one another. Others discussed travel arrangements for relatives returning to different parts of India. The atmosphere carried the familiar mixture of grief, exhaustion, and reflection that often follows the loss of someone deeply loved.
Inside the Mehra family, however, another emotion was beginning to surface.
Suspicion.
Rajesh Mehra, the eldest of four children, stood several metres away speaking quietly with the family lawyer. Their conversation appeared serious. The lawyer occasionally nodded before referring to a folder he carried beneath his arm.
Amit noticed immediately.
“Look at him,” he whispered to his younger sister Kavya. “Father hasn’t even been laid to rest and he’s already talking to the lawyer.”
Kavya glanced across the courtyard before lowering her eyes.
“Maybe it isn’t what you think.”
Amit gave a tired smile.
“When has Rajesh ever surprised us?”
Those words were not born that morning. They had been quietly forming for almost fifteen years.
Rajesh had always been different from the rest of the family. After graduating from university, he accepted a position with an international technology company in Bengaluru. Promotions followed quickly. So did international travel, demanding projects, and increasingly long working hours. Whenever weddings were held, Rajesh often arrived late or apologised that he could not come. During festivals he frequently sent expensive gifts instead of appearing in person. Birthdays were remembered with generous bank transfers and thoughtful messages, but rarely with his physical presence.
Their mother sometimes complained that she missed him. Their father usually defended him by saying work was demanding and opportunities like his did not come often. The younger siblings accepted the explanation for a while. Eventually they stopped believing it.
Slowly, without anyone announcing it, a story developed inside the family.
Rajesh loved success more than people.
He loved work more than family.
He had become too important for ordinary family life.
Nobody ever asked him whether those conclusions were true.
Over time, invitations became fewer. Family conversations became shorter. The siblings remained polite whenever they met, but something important had disappeared. They no longer knew one another’s lives.
Now their father was gone.
Old assumptions suddenly became fresh accusations.
As relatives gradually left the cremation grounds, the lawyer walked toward the four siblings.
“Your father requested that all of you meet tomorrow morning at his home,” he said. “There are some instructions he wanted delivered together.”
Amit folded his arms.
“I suppose Rajesh already knows what those instructions are.”
The lawyer looked genuinely surprised.
“Actually,” he replied, “your brother refused to discuss your father’s wishes until every one of you could hear them together.”
For the first time that day, Amit found himself without an immediate response.
Rajesh said nothing. He simply thanked the lawyer and walked quietly toward his car.
Kavya watched him leave.
Something about his face seemed different.
Not defensive.
Not proud.
Just… tired.
The next morning the four siblings gathered in the modest sitting room where they had grown up. Everything looked familiar. Their father’s favourite chair remained beside the window. The old clock still ticked steadily on the wall. Family photographs filled the shelves, capturing birthdays, graduations, holidays, and celebrations stretching back more than three decades.
The lawyer placed a large sealed envelope on the centre table.
Looking at each of them in turn, he spoke quietly.
“Your father left more than a will.”
He rested his hand gently on the envelope.
“He also left a letter.”
The room became completely silent.
None of them realised that before the morning ended, the story they had repeated about their brother for fifteen years would begin to unravel.
The lawyer waited until everyone had taken a seat before carefully breaking the seal on the large envelope. Inside were two documents. The first was the formal will. The second was a handwritten letter, several pages long, folded neatly and addressed simply:
To My Children.
He looked around the room.
“Your father asked that this letter be read before the will.”
The room fell completely silent.
The lawyer adjusted his glasses and began reading.
“My dear children,
If you are hearing this letter, then I have already gone home to the Lord. Do not allow my departure to divide the people I spent my life trying to keep together.
There is something I have carried in my heart for many years. I asked one of you to keep a promise. He has honoured that promise faithfully, even when it cost him your affection.”
Amit slowly turned toward Rajesh.
Rajesh kept his eyes fixed on the floor.
“Many years ago, when our family business failed, I became deeply concerned that none of you would know the burden your mother and I were carrying.
Rajesh had only just started his career.
I asked him not to tell anyone what I was about to ask of him.
He agreed.”
The lawyer paused briefly before continuing.
“From that day onward, your brother quietly carried responsibilities that belonged to me.
When Amit’s engineering fees could not be paid…
Rajesh paid them.
When Kavya received admission into medical school…
Rajesh paid those fees too.
When your mother’s heart surgery became necessary…
Rajesh insisted that I tell everyone the money came from my savings.
It did not.
It came from him.”
Nobody moved.
Kavya covered her mouth with both hands.
Amit stared at his brother without speaking.
“Every festival he missed…
He was working overtime.
Every wedding he declined…
He was travelling because overtime allowances paid your university bills.
Every birthday gift that arrived without him…
Represented another family event he sacrificed so that all of you could continue chasing your dreams.”
Rajesh quietly wiped his eyes.
No one had ever seen him cry.
“You may wonder why I never told you.
Because your brother asked me not to.
He never wanted gratitude.
He only wanted all of you to have opportunities I never had.
He once told me, ‘If they finish school and build good lives, that will be enough thanks for me.'”
The lawyer stopped reading for a moment.
The room was filled only with quiet sobbing.
“Children, I have watched something else happen over these years.
You slowly concluded that Rajesh loved his career more than his family.
I knew the truth.
He loved his family so much that he quietly allowed you to misunderstand him.
That is one of the greatest sacrifices I have ever witnessed.”
Amit lowered his head.
Every complaint.
Every sarcastic remark.
Every assumption.
They all came flooding back.
“Before you decide what kind of person someone is…
Please ask them to tell you their story.
Many families break apart because they listen to assumptions instead of one another.”
The lawyer gently folded the letter.
Nobody reached for the will.
It no longer seemed important.
Amit slowly walked across the room and stopped in front of his older brother.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Finally, Amit whispered words he should have spoken years earlier.
“Brother…
I never asked.”
Rajesh stood and embraced him.
For the first time in many years, the Mehra family listened to a story they had been living all along—but had never taken the time to hear.
One of the greatest dangers in every family is assuming we already know another person’s story. Time passes, conversations become fewer, and assumptions quietly replace understanding. Eventually we stop asking questions because we believe we already know the answers.
That is exactly what happened in Rajesh’s family. His siblings interpreted his absence as selfishness. They believed his career mattered more than his family because they judged his actions without understanding his sacrifices. Their conclusions felt reasonable because they were based on what they could see. Unfortunately, they never asked about what they could not see.
Listening requires humility. It admits that we may not know the whole story. It refuses to reduce people to isolated moments, incomplete information, or personal assumptions. True listening gives people the dignity of explaining their own lives before we decide what kind of people they are.
Jesus consistently did this throughout His ministry. He listened to blind beggars, grieving parents, discouraged disciples, desperate mothers, rejected tax collectors, and forgotten sinners. While others judged people by appearances, Jesus listened deeply enough to understand the heart. His followers are called to do the same.
Families become healthier when assumptions give way to conversations, accusations give way to curiosity, and pride gives way to humility. Restoration often begins with one simple question: “Help me understand.”

Psalm 80
Paul closes his first letter to the Corinthians by urging believers to recognise and honour faithful servants. Some people labour quietly behind the scenes, strengthening others without seeking recognition. Paul reminds the church not to overlook such people simply because their work is less visible. Faithfulness often goes unnoticed by people, but it never escapes God’s attention.
Exodus 30 describes the altar of incense. Every morning and every evening, fragrant incense rose continually before the Lord. Few people ever noticed it, yet God required that it never cease. Its ministry was quiet, hidden, and constant. Much of God’s work happens in places where few people are watching.
Psalm 80 is a heartfelt prayer asking God to restore His people. The repeated cry, “Restore us, O God,” reminds us that broken relationships, neglected communities, and wounded families can be renewed when people return to God with humble hearts. Restoration is one of God’s greatest delights.
Together these passages reveal a beautiful truth. God sees what people overlook. He honours hidden faithfulness. He receives quiet acts of sacrifice as worship. He delights in restoring relationships that have been damaged by misunderstanding. Like Rajesh, many faithful people carry burdens that nobody else sees. Before judging them, God invites us to listen.
Rajesh never asked for recognition. He quietly served, sacrificed, and carried burdens that nobody else knew about. His siblings interpreted silence as indifference when, in reality, it concealed extraordinary love. How many relationships suffer because we mistake hidden sacrifice for selfishness, or quiet faithfulness for lack of concern?
Paul urges believers to honour faithful servants. Exodus reminds us that unseen worship matters deeply to God. The psalmist cries out for restoration after seasons of pain and loss. Together they remind us that God sees what people overlook, values what others ignore, and restores what misunderstanding has damaged.
Today’s Connecting Question:
Who in your family, workplace, church, or community might you have misunderstood simply because you never took time to hear their story?
Before today ends, think about someone you may have misunderstood or someone whose motives you have questioned. Instead of making further assumptions, reach out to them if appropriate. Ask a sincere question, listen carefully, and seek understanding rather than confirmation of your own opinion.
You may begin with one of these simple questions:
Listen patiently. Resist the temptation to defend yourself, interrupt, or prepare your response while the other person is speaking. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you ears that hear with wisdom, humility, and compassion.
Personal
Father, forgive me for the times I have judged others without understanding them. Remove pride, prejudice, impatience, and every assumption that keeps me from loving people as You do. Teach me to listen carefully, to ask wise questions, and to see beyond outward appearances into the deeper realities of people’s lives. Help me become a person who brings healing rather than division wherever I go.
Immediate Family
Lord, restore trust within our homes. Heal misunderstandings between brothers and sisters, parents and children, husbands and wives. Remove resentment, suspicion, harsh words, and silent distance. Help us communicate honestly, forgive generously, and listen to one another with humility and love. May our homes become places where every member feels valued, understood, and encouraged.
Extended Family
Father, we lift before You our grandparents, grandchildren, uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and every member of our extended families. Heal relationships that have been broken by assumptions, unresolved conflicts, inheritance disputes, jealousy, and years of silence. Let reconciliation replace division, and may Your peace reign throughout our families.
Church Family and Community
Lord, make our churches communities of grace where people are known before they are judged, listened to before they are corrected, and loved before they are evaluated. Raise leaders who notice faithful servants working quietly behind the scenes. Let our communities reflect the compassion, humility, and unity of Jesus Christ.
Prayer for India
Father, we pray for the people of India. Strengthen families across every region of the nation. Heal divisions within homes, restore relationships between generations, and bless parents with wisdom as they raise their children. Encourage churches, pastors, evangelists, disciple-makers, and believers to be faithful witnesses of Christ. Open many hearts to receive the Gospel, and let Your peace and righteousness transform communities throughout the nation.
Prayer for Asia
Lord, we lift before You every nation across Asia. Raise men and women who will faithfully make disciples, serve with humility, and proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. Heal broken families, strengthen local churches, protect children, and raise a generation that seeks truth, justice, compassion, and reconciliation.
Prayer for the Unreached
Father, remember the unreached peoples throughout Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East. Send labourers into every community where Christ is not yet known. Open hearts to receive Your Word. Strengthen believers facing opposition, and establish multiplying disciple-making movements that will continue from generation to generation until every people group has had the opportunity to hear the Gospel.
Today I choose to listen before I judge.
I will seek understanding before forming conclusions.
I will honour those who quietly serve.
I will value people above assumptions.
I will pursue reconciliation instead of resentment.
I will speak with grace and listen with humility.
I will become an instrument of peace within my family, my church, and my community.
I will see like an eagle.
I will lead like a lion.
I will serve like Christ.
In Jesus’ name.
