THE 366-DAY DISCIPLE-MAKING JOURNEY
BOOK 2 β LISTENING
Hearing God. Loving People. Responding in Obedience.
See Like an Eagle. Lead Like a Lion. Serve Like Christ.
Profession of the Day: Nurse
Country of the Day: Philippines
Region: Asia
Prayer Focus: Nurses, caregivers, hospitals, migrant workers, families separated by work, and the witness of believers through compassionate service.
What happens when compassion helps us hear what people are too tired, ashamed, or afraid to say?
The night shift at San Isidro Medical Center in Manila had a rhythm only nurses truly understood. Monitors beeped, medication carts rolled softly across polished floors, families whispered prayers beside hospital beds, and doctors appeared at intervals with instructions that changed the shape of the night. By two in the morning, the hospital seemed quieter to outsiders, but Nurse Liza Mercado knew better. Pain often became louder after midnight, not always in cries or complaints, but in the way patients stared at the ceiling when everyone else thought they were sleeping.
Liza had worked as a nurse for seventeen years. She had served in emergency wards, surgical recovery rooms, paediatric units, and finally in the medical ward where long illnesses often revealed more than test results. She could change dressings, insert lines, calm anxious relatives, read vital signs, and recognise early danger in the face of a patient who insisted he was fine. But over the years, she had learned that nursing required more than clinical competence. It required listening to the body, listening to the family, listening to silence, and sometimes listening to what a patient was trying not to say.
That night, one patient kept drawing her attention. His name was Roberto Dela Cruz, a fifty-two-year-old security guard recovering from complications related to diabetes. His chart described him as stable. His blood sugar was being monitored. His wound care was scheduled. His blood pressure was acceptable. On paper, there was no emergency. Yet each time Liza entered the room, she felt that something about him was unsettled. He answered every question politely, smiled when expected, and thanked the staff more than most patients did, but his eyes seemed to carry a heaviness that medication could not touch.
Roberto was not alone in the ward, but he seemed alone in a deeper way. His wife had visited earlier in the evening with a small container of food he barely touched. His youngest daughter had sent a voice message from Cebu, telling him to get well soon and promising to visit after exams. He had listened to the message three times while pretending he was only checking his phone. When his wife left, he waved cheerfully, but after she disappeared through the doorway, his face changed. Liza saw it for only a moment before he turned toward the window.
Around three o’clock, Liza entered to check his vitals. The ward lights had been dimmed, and most patients appeared to be sleeping. Roberto was awake, his blanket pulled neatly to his chest, his phone lying face down beside him. His readings were not alarming, but his pulse was slightly higher than before. When she asked whether he had pain, he shook his head. When she asked whether he was comfortable, he nodded. When she asked whether he needed anything, he smiled and said, βNo, nurse. I am okay.β
Many nurses would have accepted the answer and moved on. There were charts to update, medications to prepare, and another patient down the hall who had been pressing the call bell every twenty minutes. But Liza remained beside the bed for a few extra seconds. She had heard βI am okayβ from too many people who were not okay. She placed the blood pressure cuff back on the tray and spoke gently.
βSir Roberto, your body is improving, but your face is telling me another story. What is troubling you tonight?β
The question seemed to surprise him. He looked toward the other beds, then lowered his voice. βNothing, nurse. I just cannot sleep.β
Liza pulled the curtain a little, not fully closing him off from the ward but giving him enough privacy to feel less exposed. βSometimes people cannot sleep because of pain. Sometimes because of fear. Sometimes because they are carrying something they do not want to give to their family. Which one is it tonight?β
Roberto tried to smile again, but this time the smile failed before it formed. For several moments he said nothing. Liza did not rush him. She had learned that silence, when held with kindness, could become a doorway. Eventually he covered his eyes with one hand and whispered that he was afraid of losing his job. The hospital bills were growing. His employer had already replaced some of his shifts. His eldest son worked overseas and sent money home, but Roberto felt ashamed that his children might have to carry him. He had spent his whole life protecting buildings, gates, offices, and people who passed through places without knowing his name. Now he could not even protect his own family from worry.
Once the first words came, the rest followed slowly. Roberto spoke about the fear of amputation that had entered his mind when the doctor explained the seriousness of his wound. He spoke about smiling whenever his wife visited because she was already tired from selling food in the neighbourhood. He spoke about the voice message from his daughter and how it broke him to hear her sound brave for his sake. He spoke about praying, then feeling guilty because his prayers were mixed with fear. He said he knew other patients had worse conditions, and perhaps he had no right to complain.
Liza listened without correcting his emotions. She did not tell him to be strong. She did not turn his fear into a lecture. She did not offer easy promises. Instead, she gave him what many suffering people rarely receive: the dignity of being heard without being hurried. When he finally became quiet, she asked whether she could pray with him. Roberto nodded, and in the dim light of the ward, beside machines and medicine trays, she prayed softly for healing, courage, provision, wisdom for the doctors, peace for his wife, and hope for his children.
After the prayer, Roberto wiped his face with the edge of the sheet and apologised for crying. Liza shook her head. βSir, tears are not a failure. Sometimes they are the body telling the truth after the mouth has worked too hard to hide it.β
Before morning, she made a note for the social worker to visit him and speak with the family about available assistance. She also briefed the doctor about his emotional distress, not as an afterthought but as part of his care. Over the next several days, Roberto became more willing to ask questions about his treatment. His wife met with the hospital team and understood the financial and medical options more clearly. His daughter called again, and this time he told her the truth gently instead of pretending everything was easy.
Weeks later, when Roberto was discharged, he walked slowly but steadily through the ward corridor with his wife beside him. His recovery would continue at home, and the future was still uncertain, but something had changed. Before leaving, he asked to see Liza. She was at the nursesβ station updating a chart when he approached, holding a small envelope. Inside was a handwritten note, the kind written carefully by someone who wanted every word to matter.
βYou cared for my wound,β the note read, βbut you also heard my fear. I thought I had to be strong by saying nothing. You helped me understand that being honest is also strength.β
Liza kept the note in her locker. Not because it praised her, but because it reminded her why listening mattered. Nurses were often overworked, underappreciated, and expected to carry emotional weight that never appeared in official reports. Yet she knew that every bedside was sacred in its own way. Every patient carried a story beyond symptoms. Every family carried burdens beyond forms. Every act of listening could become a small doorway through which Godβs comfort entered.
Years later, when younger nurses complained that patients often said they were fine when they were clearly not, Liza would tell them about Roberto. She would remind them that vital signs reveal important truths, but they do not reveal everything. A stable pulse can belong to a fearful heart. A healing wound can belong to a wounded spirit. A smiling patient can be quietly drowning in worry. βDo your clinical work well,β she would say, βbut never forget that compassion hears what charts cannot record.β
Perhaps God is asking us the same question today: Who around you has been saying, βI am okay,β while quietly hoping someone will love them enough to listen more deeply?
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10
Personal Journey β Full Bible Track:
Exodus 24
Psalm 74
In Exodus 24, the people hear the words of the Lord and respond with a commitment to obey. Godβs covenant is not built on casual hearing but on surrendered response. Listening to God always moves us toward obedience, reverence, and relationship.
In 1 Corinthians 10, Paul reminds believers to learn from the failures of those who came before them. He warns against pride, idolatry, grumbling, and careless living. He also reminds us that God is faithful and provides a way of escape in temptation. The passage teaches us to pay attention because spiritual danger often begins when people stop listening.
Psalm 74 is a cry of distress from a people asking God to remember them in a season of pain and destruction. It reminds us that God welcomes honest cries. He does not despise the voice of the wounded. He hears lament, grief, confusion, and longing, even when those cries are not polished or easy to explain.
Robertoβs medical chart said he was stable, but his heart was full of fear. Nurse Liza did not ignore the chart, but she also did not allow it to become the whole story. Her compassion helped her hear the pain that Roberto was too ashamed to speak openly.
Scripture reminds us that God hears more than formal words. In Exodus, He calls His people to hear and obey. In Corinthians, He warns believers to learn from the past and avoid careless confidence. In the Psalm, He receives the cry of a wounded people. God listens deeply, and those who belong to Him must learn to listen with the same compassion.
Many people around us carry hidden fears beneath polite answers. They may smile, work, serve, lead, or worship while quietly hoping someone will notice that they are tired. Love does not assume that a person is fine simply because they say the right words. Love pays attention. Love asks gently. Love makes room for truth to emerge.
Today’s Connecting Question:
Who is God asking you to listen to with deeper compassion today?
Think of one person who often says, βI am okay,β even when you sense they may be carrying more than they admit. Reach out today and ask gently, βHow are you really doing?β
Listen without rushing to fix everything. Then pray for them and, if possible, take one practical step to help carry their burden.
Personal
Heavenly Father, thank You because You hear the cries I speak and the burdens I do not know how to express. Teach me to listen with compassion and patience. Forgive me for rushing past people who needed care. Help me obey Your Word, learn from Your warnings, and become a vessel of comfort to those who are tired, afraid, or silently hurting.
Family
Lord, heal families where people hide pain behind silence, busyness, or forced smiles. Teach us to ask better questions, listen with love, and carry one anotherβs burdens. Let our homes become places where truth can be spoken without fear and where compassion is stronger than shame.
Asia
Father, we pray for nurses, caregivers, doctors, hospital workers, counsellors, and all who serve the sick and vulnerable across Asia. Strengthen them in body, mind, and spirit. Protect them from burnout, provide for their families, and use their compassion as a witness to Your love.
Prayer for the Philippines
Lord, we lift the Philippines before You today. Bless its families, churches, healthcare workers, leaders, schools, workers abroad, and communities. Comfort those separated from loved ones because of work and strengthen believers to shine as faithful witnesses wherever they serve. Let the hope of Jesus Christ spread throughout the nation and beyond.
Prayer for the Unreached
Father, we pray for unreached peoples throughout the Philippines, Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East. Send faithful labourers into every community, island, workplace, and family network. Open hearts to receive the Gospel, establish disciples, and raise multiplying witnesses who will carry the love of Christ to others.
Today I choose compassion over hurry.
I will listen beyond polite answers.
I will not ignore hidden pain.
I will obey Godβs Word with humility.
I will learn from His warnings.
I will comfort the weary and encourage the afraid.
I will serve people with patience and love.
I will see like an eagle.
I will lead like a lion.
I will serve like Christ.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.
Share today’s lesson with someone who serves as a nurse, caregiver, healthcare worker, counsellor, pastor, parent, mentor, or encourager.
Compassion hears what charts, reports, and polite answers cannot reveal.
Continue growing as a disciple and become part of God’s global movement.
