THE 366-DAY DISCIPLE-MAKING JOURNEY
BOOK 2 β LISTENING
Hearing God. Loving People. Responding in Obedience.
See Like an Eagle. Lead Like a Lion. Serve Like Christ.
National Focus: Endurance, Patience and Trust During Long Seasons of Waiting.
Country of the Day: New Zealand
Region: Oceania
Prayer Focus: Those living through prolonged hardship, families experiencing uncertainty, churches serving their communities during difficult seasons, and believers learning to trust God’s timing.
How do we continue trusting God when the answer we are praying for seems to take much longer than we expected?
For the first few days, everyone welcomed the rain.
The farms around the small New Zealand town had needed it. Rivers had been running lower than usual, pastures were beginning to dry, and many farmers quietly thanked God as steady showers soaked the ground. Children splashed happily through puddles on their way to school while the sound of rain tapping against rooftops became the comforting rhythm of everyday life.
But the rain continued.
One week became two. Two weeks became three. The skies remained grey almost every day. Rivers slowly crept beyond their banks. Hillsides became unstable. Roads were repeatedly closed because of flooding and landslides. Fields that had first welcomed the rain could no longer absorb it. Livestock had to be moved to safer ground, and families living near vulnerable areas watched weather forecasts with growing concern.
Among the residents was a young sheep farmer named Caleb. Only six months earlier he had taken over the family farm from his parents after years of careful planning. He had invested his savings, borrowed additional funds, and dreamed of building a future for his young family. Each morning he walked through fields that seemed to sink deeper into mud with every passing day. Fences collapsed. Access roads disappeared beneath water. Repairs that should have taken hours now required days.
At first Caleb remained optimistic. “The weather will change next week,” he told his wife. Then he began saying, “Perhaps the week after.” Eventually, he stopped making predictions altogether.
One evening, after another day of relentless rain, Caleb visited his elderly neighbour, Thomas, who had farmed the same valley for more than fifty years. The old farmer welcomed him inside, placed a kettle on the stove, and listened patiently as Caleb spoke about mounting repairs, growing financial pressure, and the exhausting uncertainty of not knowing when the rain would finally end.
When Caleb had finished speaking, Thomas quietly poured two cups of tea and looked out through the rain-covered window.
After a long silence he said,
“Most people think faith is learned when the sun comes back. I’ve discovered that faith is usually learned while you’re still waiting for the clouds to move.”
Caleb stared quietly into his cup.
For the first time in weeks, he realised that perhaps the greatest battle was no longer happening in his fields.
It was happening in his heart.
Thomas did not offer Caleb easy answers. He did not promise that the rain would end the following week, nor did he minimise the genuine difficulties the young farmer was facing. Instead, he quietly reached for an old notebook resting on the shelf beside his chair. Its pages had yellowed with age, and the leather cover showed the marks of many years of use.
Opening it carefully, Thomas turned to a page dated more than thirty years earlier.
“This was the year we lost nearly everything,” he said softly. “Floods destroyed the lower pastures. Disease spread through the livestock. Prices collapsed just when we needed income the most. I remember asking God almost every day why He seemed so quiet.”
Caleb listened without interrupting.
Thomas smiled gently as he continued reading.
“Today nothing changed. The rain continued. The bills remained unpaid. The fields were still flooded. But God was faithful today, and tomorrow I will trust Him again.”
Thomas closed the notebook.
“I wrote something similar for almost three months,” he said. “At the time, I thought those pages were recording the weather. Looking back, I realise they were recording what God was doing inside me.”
Caleb looked surprised.
“Did everything eventually work out?” he asked.
Thomas laughed quietly.
“Not exactly. Some things recovered. Some never did. A few dreams had to be replaced by better ones that I could never have imagined at the time. But I discovered something far more valuable than having every problem solved.”
He leaned forward.
“I learned that God’s faithfulness is not measured by whether life becomes easier. It is measured by His presence while life remains difficult.”
The following morning, before returning to the flooded fields, Caleb began a new notebook of his own.
He did not record rainfall totals or financial losses.
Instead, at the top of each page he wrote three simple questions:
The rain continued for many more days.
Yet something had already begun to change.
Not the weather.
The way Caleb walked through it.
Months later, when the skies finally cleared and the valley slowly recovered, Caleb realised that the greatest answer to his prayers had not been the return of sunshine.
It had been the quiet work God accomplished in his heart while the clouds still covered the sky.
There are seasons in life when our greatest challenge is not surviving a crisis but enduring a process that seems to have no clear ending. We pray faithfully, yet the answer appears delayed. We continue obeying God, yet circumstances remain unchanged. We serve, trust, and persevere while wondering why heaven seems so quiet. These are often the moments when faith is refined most deeply.
Caleb expected God to change the weather. Instead, God began changing Caleb. While the rain continued to fall upon the valley, the Holy Spirit quietly cultivated something far more valuable within the young farmer’s heart. His perspective matured. His dependence upon God deepened. His gratitude grew stronger. The circumstances remained difficult, but the person walking through those circumstances was no longer the same.
The Apostle Paul describes this remarkable process in Romans 5. Because we have been justified through faith, we stand securely in God’s grace even when life becomes difficult. Paul then makes a surprising statement. He tells believers that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance produces proven character; and proven character produces hope. This hope is not wishful thinking or mere optimism. It is a confident assurance rooted in God’s unchanging love, poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.
Notice that Paul does not say suffering automatically produces maturity. Many people become discouraged, resentful, or bitter when trials come. The transforming work occurs when we continue trusting Christ in the middle of adversity. As we persevere in faith, the Holy Spirit shapes our character. Over time, we begin responding differently to disappointment, uncertainty, delay, and hardship. Our confidence shifts away from favourable circumstances and becomes anchored in the faithfulness of God Himself.
Throughout Scripture we repeatedly see God preparing His servants through seasons of waiting. Noah continued building the ark long before rain ever appeared. Abraham waited years before the promised son was born. Hannah prayed through seasons of disappointment before Samuel arrived. David was anointed king years before he wore the crown. The disciples spent long hours waiting in prayer before the Holy Spirit was poured out at Pentecost. In every case, God was not merely delaying events. He was preparing people.
Waiting is never wasted in the Kingdom of God when it is entrusted to Him. Every day of faithful obedience strengthens spiritual muscles that cannot be developed any other way. Patience grows. Humility deepens. Compassion increases. Faith becomes steadier. We begin learning to trust God’s character even when we cannot understand His timetable.
Thomas understood this after decades of walking with Christ. His notebook had never really been about rainfall. It had become a record of God’s faithfulness. Caleb eventually discovered the same truth. The greatest miracle was not that the skies finally cleared. The greater miracle was that he emerged from the long season with stronger faith, deeper character, greater hope, and a more intimate walk with God than he had ever known before.
God’s timetable rarely matches our own, but His purposes are always trustworthy. What feels like delay from our perspective may actually be the careful shaping of a disciple whose life will one day encourage many others. When we remain faithful while the rain continues to fall, God quietly prepares us for assignments that only mature character can sustain.
Scripture: Romans 5:1β5
Personal Journey β Full Bible Track:
Leviticus 6
Psalm 96
What does Paul say suffering produces?
How does perseverance shape character?
Why does biblical hope never disappoint?
What promises stand out in todayβs passage?
How can believers encourage one another during prolonged seasons of waiting?
What is God saying to you personally today?
Romans 5 teaches that suffering is never meaningless in Godβs hands. As we trust Him, suffering produces perseverance, perseverance develops character, and character strengthens hope. This hope does not disappoint because Godβs love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.
Calebβs greatest harvest was not measured by his fields but by the transformation of his heart during the waiting. God often accomplishes His deepest work in seasons we would not have chosen.
Leviticus 6 emphasises responsibility, restitution, faithful worship, and keeping the altar fire burning. Psalm 96 calls all nations to worship the Lord and proclaim His salvation. Together with Romans 5, these passages remind us to remain faithful through hardship, keep our devotion alive, and declare Godβs goodness while we wait.
Today’s Connecting Question:
If God is using this season of waiting to produce perseverance, character, and hope within you, what might He be preparing you to become before He changes what you are praying about?
Choose one area of your life where you have been waiting upon God. Rather than asking only when your circumstances will change, spend time asking what He may be teaching you during this season. Begin keeping a simple journal of His daily faithfulness. Record answered prayers, unexpected encouragements, Scriptures that strengthen you, and opportunities to serve others. Over time, you may discover that what seemed like an ordinary record of difficult days has become a testimony of God’s unfailing presence.
Look for someone else who is walking through a prolonged season of uncertainty. Encourage them with a visit, a message, a meal, a prayer, or practical assistance. One of the greatest ways to remain hopeful is to become a source of hope for someone else. As you strengthen others, God often strengthens you as well.
Personal
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your constant presence through every season of my life. Forgive me for the times I have allowed delay to become discouragement or uncertainty to weaken my faith. Teach me to trust Your heart even when I cannot understand Your timetable. Produce within me perseverance, proven character, and enduring hope through the work of Your Holy Spirit. Help me to remain faithful in prayer, steadfast in obedience, and joyful in hope until Your purposes are fulfilled.
For New Zealand
Father, we pray for the people of New Zealand. Strengthen families, churches, farmers, emergency workers, community leaders, and all who face the challenges of severe weather, flooding, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. Grant wisdom to those responsible for protecting communities and rebuilding infrastructure. May Your Church be a beacon of hope, compassion, practical service, and faithful witness throughout the nation.
For Those Waiting
Lord, we remember all who are waiting todayβfor healing, employment, restoration, provision, reconciliation, guidance, justice, or the fulfilment of promises You have placed within their hearts. Strengthen them while they wait. Renew their courage each day. Guard them from despair and remind them that Your timing is always perfect. Let hope arise where weariness has settled, and may they experience Your peace that surpasses understanding.
For the Church Worldwide
Father, build within Your Church a steadfast faith that is not dependent upon favourable circumstances. Raise disciples who continue serving, worshipping, praying, giving, and loving even during seasons of uncertainty. May our perseverance become a testimony that points the world to the unchanging faithfulness of Jesus Christ.
Prayer for the Unreached
Lord of the harvest, remember every unreached people group throughout the earth. Send labourers filled with compassion and endurance into every nation, island, village, and city. Open hearts to receive the Gospel, establish multiplying disciple-making communities, and reveal the hope of Christ to those who have never heard His name.
Today I choose to trust God regardless of my circumstances. My hope is anchored in His unchanging character and not in what I can presently see. I will continue praying, obeying, serving, and believing while I wait. Every trial is producing perseverance. Every step of obedience is shaping my character. Every promise of God remains trustworthy. I will walk forward in faith, strengthened by His grace and sustained by His love. I will see like an eagle. I will lead like a lion. I will serve like Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Share today’s lesson with someone who has grown weary while waiting for an answer to prayer. Encourage them to remember that God is always at work, even when His work is not immediately visible. The same Lord who shapes our circumstances also shapes our hearts, preparing us for the future He has planned. Hope grows strongest when it is anchored in His faithfulness rather than in immediate results.
“Waiting is not wasted when it is spent walking faithfully with God. While we wait for Him to change our circumstances, He is often preparing us to carry His purposes.”
