BOOK 1 β AWAKENING
Learning to See
π DAY 12 β The Violin in the Attic
For forty years, nobody touched it.
The old violin sat inside a dusty wooden case beneath the sloping roof of a farmhouse in northern Austria. Generations had passed through the house. Children had grown up and moved away. Grandchildren visited during holidays. Rooms were renovated. Furniture was replaced.
Yet the violin remained exactly where it had been left.
Forgotten.
Or perhaps overlooked.
No one seemed entirely sure which.
The attic itself was rarely visited. The narrow staircase creaked with every step, and the low ceiling forced most adults to bend slightly as they moved around. Old trunks, boxes, photographs, and furniture occupied nearly every corner.
To most people, it was simply a storage space.
To twelve-year-old Lukas, it was an adventure.
The discovery happened during summer vacation.
Rain had fallen for three consecutive days, leaving him trapped indoors with little to do. After exhausting every board game and growing tired of television, he began exploring parts of the farmhouse he had never paid much attention to before.
That was how he found the attic.
And eventually, the violin.
The case rested beneath an old blanket near the back wall.
At first he thought it contained tools.
When he opened it, he found something entirely different.
The instrument was beautiful.
Even beneath layers of dust, its craftsmanship remained obvious.
The wood glowed warmly beneath the grime.
The curves were elegant.
The strings, though old, were still intact.
Lukas carefully lifted it from the case.
He knew almost nothing about violins.
But he immediately sensed it was special.
Later that evening he carried it downstairs.
His grandfather looked up from his newspaper.
“Where did you find that?”
“The attic.”
The old man’s expression changed.
Slowly he removed his glasses.
For several moments he simply stared at the instrument.
“I haven’t seen that in years.”
“Whose is it?” Lukas asked.
His grandfather leaned back in his chair.
For a moment he seemed to be traveling somewhere far away.
“It belonged to your great-grandfather.”
The answer surprised him.
Lukas had never met his great-grandfather.
The man had died decades before he was born.
“Was he a musician?”
His grandfather smiled.
“The best violinist in three villages.”
That answer created even more questions.
If the instrument belonged to such a talented musician, why had it been abandoned in an attic?
The old man seemed to anticipate the question.
“He stopped playing.”
“Why?”
The grandfather folded the newspaper and placed it aside.
“Because life happened.”
The answer felt unsatisfying.
But as the evening continued, the story slowly emerged.
As a young man, Lukas’s great-grandfather had dreamed of becoming a professional musician. He performed throughout the region. Local festivals invited him. Churches requested his participation. Some believed he might eventually join one of the larger orchestras in Vienna.
Then war came.
Everything changed.
Dreams were postponed.
Responsibilities increased.
Survival became more important than ambition.
After the war ended, marriage followed.
Then children.
Then farming.
Then more responsibilities.
Years passed.
The violin was used less and less.
Eventually it disappeared into the attic.
Waiting.
Not for days.
Not for months.
But for decades.
That night Lukas could not stop thinking about it.
The next morning he searched online for information about violins.
Then he watched videos.
Then he asked questions.
Before long he convinced his parents to let him take lessons.
At first progress was slow.
Very slow.
The sounds emerging from the instrument were often painful to hear.
Family members endured months of squeaks, scratches, and missed notes.
Several times Lukas considered quitting.
Yet something kept pulling him back.
Perhaps it was curiosity.
Perhaps determination.
Or perhaps something deeper.
Whatever the reason, he continued practicing.
Weeks became months.
Months became years.
Gradually the sounds improved.
Technique developed.
Confidence grew.
Teachers noticed unusual potential.
By sixteen, Lukas was performing publicly.
By eighteen, he had earned admission into a respected music conservatory.
By twenty-two, he was performing professionally.
The old violin accompanied him through every stage of the journey.
Then one autumn evening, something unexpected happened.
Lukas received an invitation to perform at a regional music festival.
Thousands attended every year.
The event featured some of the finest musicians in the country.
It was the largest audience he had ever faced.
Nervousness followed him throughout the day.
As evening approached, he found himself thinking about the attic.
The dust.
The forgotten case.
The rainy afternoon when everything began.
And the man he had never met.
Standing backstage, he called his grandfather.
“I wish he could have seen this.”
For several seconds there was silence.
Then his grandfather answered.
“You know, he almost did.”
“What do you mean?”
The old man laughed softly.
“There was something I never told you.”
Lukas waited.
“A few months before he died, we cleaned the attic together. We found the violin. I asked him whether we should throw it away.”
The story suddenly felt important.
“What did he say?”
His grandfather’s voice softened.
“He told me to leave it exactly where it was.”
“Why?”
“Because one day, someone would find it.”
Lukas felt a chill run through him.
“He said that?”
“He did.”
The old man paused.
“Then he smiled and said something else.”
“What?”
“He said, ‘Perhaps the dream isn’t finished yet.'”
For a long time neither spoke.
The concert that evening became one of the most memorable performances of Lukas’s life.
Not because it was perfect.
Not because of the applause.
Not because of the recognition.
But because he realized he was participating in a story much larger than himself.
The violin had never truly been forgotten.
The dream had never truly died.
It had simply been waiting.
Waiting for the right hands.
Waiting for the right time.
Waiting for the next chapter.
Many things in life appear abandoned when they are merely unfinished.
A calling may seem buried.
A dream may seem forgotten.
A gift may seem unused.
A purpose may seem delayed.
Yet God often works across generations.
Seeds planted in one season sometimes bear fruit in another.
What appears lost may simply be waiting for the moment God intends to restore it.
The violin spent forty years in darkness.
Yet its story was not over.
Neither was the dream connected to it.
And perhaps God is asking us a question today:
What gift, calling, dream, or purpose have you declared finished that God may still be preparing to use?
