Learning to See

🌍 DAY 21 — The Seed Beneath the Snow

Everyone believed it was dead.

By February, even Elias had stopped looking for it.

The small patch of earth sat behind his grandfather’s cottage in the Swiss Alps, buried beneath months of snow and ice. Winter had arrived early that year and settled heavily across the mountains. The garden disappeared beneath a blanket of white so deep that the stone borders could barely be seen.

Nothing moved.

Nothing grew.

Nothing seemed alive.

The world appeared frozen.

And somewhere beneath all that snow lay a single seed.

The seed had been planted the previous autumn.

Elias remembered the day clearly.

His grandfather had called him into the garden shortly before sunset.

The air had been cold enough for jackets but not yet cold enough for snow. Golden leaves drifted from nearby trees while the mountains glowed orange beneath the fading light.

His grandfather knelt beside a patch of freshly turned soil.

In his weathered hand rested a single seed.

It looked unimpressive.

Small.

Ordinary.

Forgettable.

“What kind is it?” Elias asked.

His grandfather smiled.

“Wait and see.”

The answer frustrated him immediately.

Children prefer information.

Adults aren’t much different.

“What will it become?”

Again the old man smiled.

“Wait and see.”

Together they planted the seed.

Covered it carefully.

Watered the soil.

Then walked back toward the cottage.

That should have been the end of the story.

Instead it became the beginning.

Because Elias returned the next day.

And the next.

And the next.

Nothing happened.

Days passed.

Nothing appeared.

Weeks passed.

Still nothing.

Then winter arrived.

Snow covered the garden.

Temperatures dropped.

The mountains disappeared behind storms.

And eventually Elias stopped checking.

One afternoon in January he finally voiced what he had been thinking for weeks.

The two of them sat beside the fireplace while snow drifted outside the window.

“I think the seed died.”

His grandfather looked up from his book.

“What makes you think that?”

“It never grew.”

The old man nodded.

Then returned to reading.

The conversation seemed finished.

Until several minutes later.

Without looking up, he asked a question.

“What do you think a seed does during winter?”

Elias shrugged.

“Nothing.”

His grandfather closed the book.

“Are you sure?”

The boy nodded confidently.

The old man smiled.

Then pointed toward the snow-covered garden outside.

“The most important things are happening right now.”

Elias looked confused.

“Nothing is happening.”

His grandfather shook his head.

“Nothing visible is happening.”

The distinction meant little to him at the time.

The garden remained buried.

The seed remained invisible.

Winter continued.

Life moved on.

February arrived.

Then March.

Gradually the snow began disappearing.

Small patches of earth emerged.

The mountains changed color.

Birds returned.

Streams flowed again.

Spring arrived quietly.

One afternoon Elias ran outside.

At first he wasn’t looking for the seed.

He was simply enjoying the warmer weather.

Then he noticed something.

Near the edge of the garden, a tiny green shoot pushed through the soil.

Small.

Fragile.

Easy to overlook.

Yet undeniably alive.

He stared at it.

Then ran toward the cottage.

“Grandpa!”

The old man appeared at the door.

Elias pointed excitedly.

“It’s growing!”

His grandfather looked toward the garden.

Then smiled.

Not with surprise.

With satisfaction.

As though he had expected this all along.

The days that followed felt magical.

The small shoot grew steadily.

Leaves appeared.

The stem strengthened.

By early summer, the tiny seed had become something remarkable.

Not merely a plant.

A flowering alpine rose unlike anything else in the garden.

Visitors stopped to admire it.

Neighbors commented on it.

Photographs were taken.

The flower became one of the most beautiful things on the property.

Yet what fascinated Elias most was not what he could see.

It was what he couldn’t.

One evening, while watering the garden, he remembered the conversation beside the fireplace.

The seed had not been doing nothing.

Not at all.

During those long winter months, unseen work had been taking place beneath the surface.

Roots had been forming.

Life had been developing.

Preparation had been happening.

Growth had been occurring where no one could observe it.

The flower visible in summer was only possible because of the invisible work that happened during winter.

Years later, long after his grandfather had passed away, Elias would still remember that lesson.

Especially during difficult seasons.

Especially during periods when progress seemed absent.

Especially during moments when prayers appeared unanswered.

Life contains winters.

Seasons where growth feels impossible.

Seasons where dreams appear buried.

Seasons where answers remain hidden.

Seasons where nothing seems to be happening.

At least on the surface.

The temptation during those seasons is to assume God has stopped working.

That progress has ended.

That hope has died.

That the story is over.

Yet God’s work often happens beneath the surface long before it becomes visible.

Joseph spent years in prison before becoming a ruler.

Moses spent decades in the wilderness before leading a nation.

David spent years tending sheep before sitting on a throne.

The disciples spent years learning before changing the world.

The seed beneath the snow wasn’t dead.

It was developing.

Not visible.

Not celebrated.

Not obvious.

But alive.

Very much alive.

Perhaps that is why Scripture repeatedly encourages believers not to lose heart.

Because what appears inactive may actually be preparation.

What appears delayed may actually be development.

What appears buried may actually be growing.

Years after the flower first bloomed, Elias found one of his grandfather’s journals.

Inside was a sentence written beside a sketch of the garden.

It read:

“Never judge a seed by winter.”

He smiled when he read it.

Then he understood.

His grandfather had not merely planted a flower.

He had planted a lesson.

And perhaps God is asking us a question today:

What area of your life have you declared dead that God may still be developing beneath the surface?

Personal

Father, help me trust You during seasons when I cannot see visible progress. Strengthen my faith and remind me that You are always working, even beneath the surface.

Pray for growth, healing, and God’s purposes to flourish within your family.

Community

Pray for those in difficult seasons of waiting, uncertainty, or discouragement. Ask God to renew their hope.

Pray for spiritual awakening throughout Switzerland. Ask God to strengthen believers, renew churches, and raise disciple-makers.

Unreached Peoples

Pray that those who have never heard the Gospel will encounter Jesus Christ and that workers will be sent into the harvest.

I trust God’s timing.

I trust God’s process.

I trust God’s wisdom.

Even when I cannot see immediate results.

God is working.

God is preparing.

God is developing what He has planted.

I will remain faithful.

I will remain patient.

I will remain hopeful.

I will see like an eagle.

I will lead like a lion.

I will serve like Christ.

In Jesus’ name.
