Big Question

Can people sincerely pray to the same God while allowing walls to remain between one another?

Story

The stone wall stood only two metres high.

Visitors often assumed it marked the boundary between two neighbouring properties. Few realised that, years earlier, no wall had existed at all. The small courtyard had once belonged to a single Christian fellowship where believers gathered for worship, shared meals, prayed together, and welcomed travellers passing through the old town.

Then came a disagreement.

At first it seemed small enough to resolve. Strong opinions were exchanged. Hurt feelings went unaddressed. Conversations became shorter. Assumptions replaced honest dialogue. Before long, families began choosing sides. Eventually the fellowship divided into two congregations.

Years later, someone built the wall.

It was intended simply to define property boundaries after the separation. Yet over time the stones began representing something much larger. Each congregation repaired its own building, maintained its own garden, organised its own ministries, and held its own worship services. Every Sunday morning, songs of praise rose from both sides of the wall at almost exactly the same hour.

People prayed for revival.

People prayed for their communities.

People prayed for missionaries.

People prayed for peace.

But very few prayed about the wall.

Children growing up in both congregations accepted the separation as normal. Many had never played together. Some did not even know the names of families worshipping only a few metres away. When visitors asked why two churches stood side by side, different explanations were offered depending upon whom they happened to ask.

One spring morning a tour group visited both congregations. Among them was a little girl no older than eight. While the adults listened to historical explanations, she quietly wandered into the courtyard.

She looked at the wall for several moments.

Then she asked the guide a question that none of the adults had considered for many years.

“If everyone here is praying to Jesus… why are they praying from opposite sides of a wall?”

No one answered immediately.

Sometimes the simplest questions reveal the deepest wounds.

Story Continues

The little girl’s question lingered in the courtyard long after the tour group had departed.

Several people smiled politely at the innocence of childhood and returned to their conversations. Yet one man could not dismiss what he had heard.

His name was Eliav.

For more than forty years he had worshipped in one of the congregations. He had been a young man when the fellowship divided. He remembered the meetings, the arguments, the accusations, and the painful departure of families who had once shared meals around the same tables. He also remembered something that troubled him even more.

He could no longer remember what had started the disagreement.

The reason had faded.

The wall had remained.

That evening, Eliav sat alone in the courtyard after everyone else had gone home. The evening breeze carried the sound of laughter from homes on both sides of the property. Lights shone through windows only a few metres apart. Children who attended different churches chased one another through nearby streets, unaware that adults still carried burdens from another generation.

Opening his Bible, Eliav began reading from the Gospel of John. His eyes rested on Jesus’ prayer:

“…that all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in Me and I am in You… Then the world will believe that You sent Me.”

He read the words again.

Then a third time.

For years he had prayed for revival.

He had prayed for young people.

He had prayed for missionaries.

He had prayed for the city.

But he had never once prayed, “Lord, begin reconciliation with me.”

The following Sunday, before the morning service began, Eliav did something that surprised everyone.

He walked slowly to the gate separating the two properties.

An elderly man from the neighbouring congregation happened to be unlocking his own gate at exactly the same moment.

The two men looked at one another in silence.

Years of history stood between them.

Eliav finally spoke.

“Brother,” he said quietly, “I don’t know everything that happened all those years ago. I don’t know who was right or who was wrong anymore. But I know this.”

He paused, his voice trembling.

“I don’t want my grandchildren to inherit my unfinished quarrels.”

The other man lowered his head.

For a long moment neither of them spoke.

Then, without another word, he stepped forward and embraced Eliav.

People arriving for worship stopped where they were.

Some began to cry.

Others simply stood in silence.

Nothing about the property had changed.

The wall was still standing.

But for the first time in decades, there was no wall between two brothers.

Sometimes God begins rebuilding His Church long before anyone removes a single stone.

Kingdom Insight

The wall between the two congregations was built with stone, but it had first been built within human hearts. Long before anyone stacked one stone upon another, misunderstanding, wounded pride, unspoken disappointment, and unresolved conflict had quietly created distance between brothers and sisters who once worshipped together. Physical walls often reveal spiritual walls that have existed for years.

Eliav realised something many believers eventually discover. Time does not automatically heal broken relationships. Years may pass while memories fade, yet bitterness, suspicion, and separation quietly remain. Sometimes we remember the offence more clearly than the reason behind it. In other cases, we no longer remember the disagreement at all, yet we continue living with its consequences. Reconciliation rarely begins because circumstances change. It begins when someone humbly allows God to change the heart.

On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus prayed one of the most remarkable prayers recorded in Scripture. He prayed that all who believed in Him would be one, just as He and the Father are one. This unity was never intended to erase every difference of personality, culture, language, or gifting. Rather, it was to demonstrate the supernatural love of God working among people who chose to place Christ above personal preference, pride, and past hurts.

Jesus also revealed why this unity matters. He declared that when His followers live in genuine love and oneness, the world will recognise that the Father sent the Son. In other words, unity is not merely an internal blessing for the Church. It is part of our witness to the world. Division weakens our testimony, while reconciliation displays the transforming power of the Gospel.

This does not mean Christians will agree on every secondary issue. Throughout the New Testament we find believers discussing difficult questions, working through disagreements, and exercising wisdom in matters of conscience. Biblical unity is not built upon identical opinions but upon a shared Lord, a shared Gospel, a shared mission, and a shared commitment to love one another as Christ has loved us.

The Apostle Paul repeatedly urged believers to make every effort to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Notice his wording. Unity is something God creates through Christ; our responsibility is to preserve it through humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and love. Every act of reconciliation strengthens the Body of Christ and honours the prayer Jesus Himself prayed.

The wall in the courtyard did not disappear overnight. Yet something far more important happened first. Two brothers embraced. Forgiveness replaced suspicion. Humility overcame pride. The first stones removed were not from the wall but from human hearts. Whenever that happens, genuine reconciliation has already begun.

Many of the walls that divide families, churches, workplaces, and communities today are not made of concrete or stone. They are built from words left unsaid, apologies never offered, forgiveness withheld, assumptions believed, and conversations avoided. Christ continues inviting His people to become builders of bridges rather than guardians of walls.

Exploring Today’s Scriptures

Jesus prayed that all believers would be united in love, truth, and purpose, reflecting the relationship between the Father and the Son. This unity is produced as followers of Christ walk in humility, forgiveness, obedience, and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.

Eliav’s story reminds us that reconciliation often begins with one courageous step. Someone chooses to forgive, listen, cross the distance, and trust God with the outcome. The first barrier God asks us to remove may be the one within our own hearts.

Leviticus 7 explains the regulations for offerings and emphasises gratitude, fellowship, holiness, and faithful worship. Psalm 97 declares that the Lord reigns and calls those who love Him to reject evil and rejoice in His righteousness. Together with John 17, these passages remind us that true unity is built upon holiness, truth, love, and submission to God’s reign.

Today’s Connecting Question:

If Jesus prayed for the unity of His followers before He went to the Cross, what step might He be inviting you to take today so that someone else can experience His love through your willingness to pursue reconciliation?

Commands to Obey

• Make every effort to preserve the unity of the Body of Christ.
• Pursue reconciliation quickly when relationships become strained.
• Speak the truth with humility, grace, and love.
• Forgive others as Christ has forgiven you.
• Pray for those with whom you disagree.
• Choose humility above personal pride.
• Protect the witness of the Church through your relationships.
• Become a builder of bridges rather than walls.

Things to Avoid

• Avoid allowing unresolved conflict to become permanent division.
• Avoid gossip, suspicion, and assumptions.
• Avoid allowing pride to prevent reconciliation.
• Avoid speaking about people instead of speaking with them.
• Avoid treating fellow believers as opponents.
• Avoid confusing secondary issues with the Gospel itself.
• Avoid passing unresolved conflicts to the next generation.
• Avoid becoming comfortable with walls Christ never intended to exist.

Kingdom Action Step

Prayerfully ask the Holy Spirit to reveal whether there is anyone from whom you have become spiritually or relationally distant. If possible, take the first step toward restoring the relationship. That may involve making a phone call, arranging a conversation, offering an apology, asking forgiveness, extending forgiveness, or simply expressing a desire for peace. You cannot control another person’s response, but you can choose to obey Christ by pursuing reconciliation.

Look beyond your immediate church or fellowship this week. Pray intentionally for another congregation in your community. Thank God for the work He is doing through them, and ask Him to strengthen their leaders, bless their ministry, and advance His Kingdom through their witness. When we celebrate what God is doing through others, we strengthen the unity of Christ’s Body.

Prayer

Personal
Heavenly Father, thank You for reconciling me to Yourself through Jesus Christ. Forgive me for every attitude, word, or action that has contributed to division rather than unity. Remove pride, bitterness, unforgiveness, and selfish ambition from my heart. Fill me with the love, humility, patience, and gentleness of Christ. Help me become a peacemaker who reflects Your heart and honours Your Church through faithful obedience.

For Israel
Father, we pray for the people of Israel. May Your peace rest upon the land and upon all who call upon Your name. Strengthen believers throughout the nation to live as faithful witnesses of Jesus Christ. Build relationships marked by humility, truth, compassion, and reconciliation. Raise disciple-makers who will proclaim the Gospel with courage and grace, and may Your Church reflect the unity for which Christ prayed.

For the Church Worldwide
Lord Jesus, answer the prayer You prayed before going to the Cross. Make Your people one. Heal divisions caused by pride, misunderstanding, tradition, prejudice, and unforgiveness. Help us to preserve the unity of the Spirit while remaining faithful to Your truth. May our love for one another become a powerful testimony that points the world to You.

For Church Leaders
Father, give pastors, elders, ministry leaders, and missionaries wisdom to lead with humility and courage. Help them model forgiveness, servant leadership, and biblical reconciliation. Protect them from discouragement and division, and use them to strengthen unity within the Body of Christ.

Prayer for the Unreached
Lord of the harvest, send faithful labourers into every unreached nation, tribe, language, and people group. Let those who hear the Gospel encounter communities of believers whose unity reflects the love of Christ. May many come to know Jesus through both the message we proclaim and the lives we live together.

Daily Declaration

Today I choose to walk in the unity of the Spirit. I will pursue peace, practise forgiveness, and protect the fellowship of God’s people. I will not allow pride, offence, or bitterness to build walls within my heart. By the grace of God, I will become a bridge-builder, a peacemaker, and a faithful ambassador of Jesus Christ. I will see like an eagle. I will lead like a lion. I will serve like Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
