366DaysDBS DAY 26 — The Pilgrim Who Asked the Wrong Question

366DaysDBS: The 366-Day Disciple-Making Journey See Like an Eagle. Lead Like a Lion. Serve Like Christ. "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations..." — Matthew 28:19–20

THE 366-DAY DISCIPLE-MAKING JOURNEY
BOOK 2 — LISTENING
Hearing God. Loving People. Responding in Obedience.

See Like an Eagle. Lead Like a Lion. Serve Like Christ.

National Focus: Seeking God with the Right Motives.
Country of the Day: Saudi Arabia
Region: Middle East
Prayer Focus: That people throughout the nations would move beyond seeking God’s gifts to seeking God’s heart and His Kingdom above all else.

Big Question

When you seek God, are you primarily looking for what He can give you, or for the privilege of knowing Him and doing His will?

Story

Nasser had heard stories about the old man for nearly ten years.

People rarely spoke about him publicly, but among believers scattered across the Arabian Peninsula his name was quietly mentioned with deep respect. He was not known for leading large gatherings or writing influential books. He had never built a ministry bearing his own name, nor had he sought recognition beyond the small communities where he faithfully served. Those who knew him simply described him as a man who had spent decades walking closely with God.

Many travelled long distances hoping to spend even a few hours in his company. Some came with difficult questions about Scripture. Others sought wisdom for their families or guidance for important decisions. A few arrived carrying burdens that had weighed heavily upon them for years. Almost everyone returned home saying the same thing.

“I did not receive the answer I expected. I received something far better.”

Those words fascinated Nasser. He had recently launched a successful business and believed God had blessed his efforts. Yet the more successful he became, the more restless he felt. He wanted greater wisdom, greater influence, greater opportunities, and greater success still. When a close friend suggested visiting the elderly disciple-maker, Nasser immediately agreed. Surely, he thought, a man who had walked with God for so many years would know the secret to living an even more blessed life.

The journey took almost two days. As his vehicle crossed long stretches of desert, Nasser rehearsed the questions he intended to ask. How could he make wiser decisions? How could he experience greater favour? How could he know God’s direction more clearly? How could he become more influential? His notebook gradually filled with questions, almost all beginning with the same word.

How…

Late on the second afternoon, he finally arrived at the small stone house where the elderly man lived. The place surprised him. There was no impressive building, no reception area, no assistants managing appointments, and no visible signs that someone respected across the region lived there. A small vegetable garden stood beside the house. A few fruit trees offered welcome shade from the afternoon sun. In the distance, two children laughed as they helped draw water from a well.

The old man was kneeling beside a patch of tomatoes when Nasser arrived. He looked up, smiled warmly, wiped the soil from his hands, and greeted his visitor as though he had been expecting an old friend rather than a stranger.

“Welcome,” he said. “You must be tired after such a long journey. Come inside. We will eat first, and then we can talk.”

The meal was remarkably simple. Fresh bread, vegetables from the garden, dates, and warm tea were placed on the small wooden table. As they ate, the old man asked about Nasser’s family, his work, his church, and his walk with Christ. Nasser noticed something unusual. The elderly disciple-maker seemed far more interested in listening than in speaking. Whenever Nasser expected advice, another thoughtful question gently followed instead.

When the meal ended, Nasser finally opened the notebook he had carried throughout the journey.

He smiled with anticipation.

“I have travelled a very long way,” he said, “because there is something I need to ask you.”

Story Continues

The elderly man nodded gently and folded his hands upon the table.

“Please,” he said. “Ask whatever is on your heart.”

Nasser opened his notebook. Every page was filled with carefully written questions collected during the long journey across the desert. He took a slow breath before speaking.

“People say you have walked with God for many years. I want to know the secret. How can I experience greater blessing? How can I become more successful in what God has entrusted to me? How can I hear His voice more clearly? How can I increase my influence? How can I become more effective?”

The questions came one after another until the notebook was almost empty. When he finally looked up, Nasser expected the old man to begin explaining principles, sharing experiences, or perhaps recommending books to read.

Instead, the elderly disciple-maker smiled quietly.

He reached for the notebook, closed it gently, and slid it back across the table.

“Those are good questions,” he said. “But I wonder if they are the first questions you should be asking.”

Nasser looked puzzled.

The old man continued.

“Nearly every person who visits me asks some version of the same questions. They want God’s direction. They want His favour. They want His blessing. They want His protection. They want His provision. None of those desires are wrong. Our heavenly Father delights in caring for His children.”

He paused for a moment before speaking again.

“But after all these years, I have discovered that many sincere believers begin their journey with the wrong question. They ask, ‘What can God do for me?’ Long before they ask, ‘Lord, what do You desire to accomplish through me?’

The room became very still.

The old man rose from his chair and walked slowly to a nearby window overlooking the small garden. Birds moved quietly among the fruit trees while children from the village laughed in the distance.

“Do you know,” he said softly, “what changed my own life?”

Nasser shook his head.

“For years my prayers sounded very much like yours. ‘Lord, bless me. Guide me. Protect me. Open doors for me. Use me.’ They were sincere prayers, but one day the Holy Spirit quietly interrupted them with a different question.”

He turned and looked directly at Nasser.

“The Lord asked me, ‘If I answered every one of your prayers, would My Kingdom grow… or only your life become more comfortable?‘”

Nasser felt as though the question had travelled across the table and settled deep within his own heart.

For several minutes, neither of them spoke.

Finally, the elderly man returned to the table and said quietly, “Tomorrow morning, before we discuss blessing, influence, success, or purpose, I would like us to pray one simple prayer together.”

Nasser leaned forward.

“What prayer?”

The old man smiled.

Lord… what do You want from me?

For the first time since beginning his journey, Nasser realised he had travelled hundreds of kilometres carrying a notebook full of questions, yet he had never once considered asking the one that mattered most.

Kingdom Insight

Nasser’s questions were not wrong. Every one of them reflected desires that many sincere believers bring before God each day. We pray for wisdom because we need direction. We pray for provision because we depend upon God’s care. We ask Him to protect our families, bless our work, open doors of opportunity, and lead us into His purpose. Scripture encourages us to bring every request before the Lord with thanksgiving. The problem was not the questions themselves. The problem was the order in which they were being asked.

The elderly disciple-maker recognised that Nasser’s attention had become fixed upon what God might do for him before he had considered what God desired to accomplish through him. Like many believers, he had unconsciously placed God’s blessings at the centre of his spiritual life instead of God’s Kingdom. His prayers had become increasingly focused on receiving rather than becoming, on success rather than surrender, and on personal advancement rather than faithful obedience.

Jesus addressed this very issue in the Sermon on the Mount. After speaking about the worries that often consume our lives—food, clothing, security, and the uncertainties of tomorrow—He gave His followers one of the clearest priorities found anywhere in Scripture: “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Jesus did not dismiss our daily needs. He simply restored them to their proper place. God’s Kingdom must always come before our personal comfort, and His will before our own ambitions.

Seeking the Kingdom first changes the way we pray. Instead of asking only, “Lord, bless my plans,” we begin asking, “Lord, reveal Your plans.” Instead of praying merely, “Help me succeed,” we pray, “Help me remain faithful.” Instead of measuring God’s goodness by what we receive, we begin measuring our lives by whether Christ is being formed within us and whether His purposes are advancing through us.

Throughout Scripture, the men and women whom God used most powerfully shared one characteristic. Abraham left his homeland because God called him. Moses surrendered the comfort of Midian to obey God’s commission. Isaiah answered, “Here am I, send me.” Mary responded, “Be it unto me according to your word.” Paul considered everything else secondary to knowing Christ and making Him known. None of these servants pursued God’s Kingdom as a means of obtaining personal success. They pursued God Himself, trusting Him to provide everything necessary for the assignment He had given them.

This remains the invitation Christ extends to every disciple today. God is not merely inviting us to build successful lives with His help. He is calling us to participate in His eternal mission. When we seek Him first, our ambitions are purified, our motives are transformed, and our definition of success begins to resemble His. We discover that the greatest blessing is not found in what God places into our hands but in becoming the kind of people through whom He is pleased to accomplish His purposes.

Reflecting on the Story

  • Why were Nasser’s questions incomplete rather than entirely wrong?
  • What question did the elderly disciple-maker encourage him to ask instead?
  • What does it mean to seek God’s Kingdom first?
  • How does seeking God’s Kingdom reshape our prayers?
  • What motivates most of your prayers today?
  • How do you define success as a follower of Christ?
  • What area of your life needs to come under God’s Kingdom more fully?
  • What truth from today’s story has challenged you most deeply?

Leviticus 4

Psalm 94

Discovery Questions

What worries was Jesus addressing?

What does He command His followers to seek first?

How does this passage reshape our priorities?

What promises accompany obedience?

How can we practically seek God’s Kingdom daily?

What is God saying to you personally?

Exploring Today’s Scriptures

Jesus addresses the temptation to make our needs, ambitions, and anxieties the centre of life. Instead, He calls us to seek God’s Kingdom and righteousness first, trusting that our Father knows what we need and will care for us as we follow Him.

Nasser crossed the desert looking for the secret to a blessed life, but discovered a better question: not merely what God could give him, but what God desired to form within him and accomplish through him.

Leviticus 4 describes the sin offering and reminds us of our need for forgiveness and restored fellowship with God. Psalm 94 declares that the Lord sees injustice, disciplines His people, and remains their refuge. Together with Matthew 6, these passages call us to place God first, walk in righteousness, and trust Him with both our needs and our future.

Today’s Connecting Question:

If every prayer you prayed this week were answered exactly as you requested, would God’s Kingdom advance more powerfully through your life, or would your life simply become more comfortable?

Commands to Obey

  • Seek God’s Kingdom above every personal ambition.
  • Desire God’s will more than His gifts.
  • Pursue faithfulness before success.
  • Pray with a surrendered heart that welcomes God’s direction.
  • Use your gifts, influence, and resources to advance God’s Kingdom.
  • Trust God to provide everything you need as you obey Him.
  • Allow the Holy Spirit to continually examine your motives.
  • Live each day as a servant of Christ and an ambassador of His Kingdom.

Things to Avoid

  • Avoid making God’s blessings your primary pursuit.
  • Avoid measuring success only by wealth, influence, or achievement.
  • Avoid allowing comfort to become more important than obedience.
  • Avoid treating prayer as merely a list of personal requests.
  • Avoid pursuing opportunities that draw you away from God’s purposes.
  • Avoid comparing your journey with that of others.
  • Avoid allowing ambition to replace surrender.
  • Avoid forgetting that the greatest blessing is knowing Christ Himself.

Kingdom Action Step

Set aside an extended time of prayer this week with no agenda other than listening to God. Resist the urge to begin by presenting your requests. Instead, begin with worship, thanksgiving, and surrender. Ask the Lord to reveal His priorities for your life, your family, your work, your ministry, and your relationships. Give Him permission to reshape your plans so that they align more fully with His Kingdom purposes.

Review the major decisions you are currently making. Prayerfully ask yourself whether each decision is primarily advancing your own comfort, reputation, and security, or whether it contributes to God’s eternal purposes. Where necessary, adjust your priorities and take one practical step that places His Kingdom first.

  • What occupies most of my prayers?
  • What does God desire to accomplish through my life?
  • Where have my personal ambitions become greater than my Kingdom assignment?
  • How can I seek God’s Kingdom more intentionally this week?
  • What act of obedience is the Holy Spirit prompting me to take today?

Prayer

Personal
Heavenly Father, thank You for inviting me into Your Kingdom and calling me to participate in Your eternal purposes. Forgive me for the times I have been more concerned about my own plans than Yours, or more focused on receiving blessings than becoming the person You desire me to be. Teach me to seek Your Kingdom first. Shape my desires until they reflect Your heart. Direct my steps, strengthen my faith, and help me to live each day in joyful obedience. May my life bring glory to You and become a blessing to others.

For Saudi Arabia
Father, we pray for the people of Saudi Arabia. Reveal Yourself through Jesus Christ to men, women, and children across the nation. Encourage believers who faithfully follow You, protect those who face hardship because of their faith, and give them wisdom, courage, and steadfast hope. Raise disciple-makers who will reflect the love, humility, and truth of Christ through their words and their lives. May many discover the joy of knowing You personally and walking in the freedom of Your Kingdom.

For the Nations
Lord, we pray that Your Kingdom will continue advancing throughout every nation of the earth. Open doors for the Gospel where they remain closed. Strengthen missionaries, pastors, evangelists, church planters, and disciple-makers who faithfully serve in difficult places. Let governments, communities, and families experience the transforming influence of people whose lives are fully surrendered to Jesus Christ.

For the Church Worldwide
Lord Jesus, help Your Church never to lose sight of its true mission. Deliver us from self-centred Christianity and fill us with a passion for Your Kingdom. Raise believers who measure success not merely by attendance, influence, or achievement, but by faithful obedience, holy living, and fruitful disciple-making. Let our churches become communities where Your will is joyfully embraced and Your Gospel faithfully proclaimed.

Prayer for the Unreached
Father, remember every unreached people group throughout the world. Send labourers into every city, village, desert, island, and remote community. Prepare hearts to receive the Gospel, establish healthy disciple-making movements, and hasten the day when every tribe, language, people, and nation will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

Daily Declaration

Today I choose to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. My greatest desire is not merely to receive God’s blessings but to know His heart and accomplish His purposes. I surrender my plans, my ambitions, my resources, and my future to His Lordship. I will pursue faithfulness above popularity, obedience above comfort, and eternal significance above temporary success. I belong to Jesus Christ. I will see like an eagle. I will lead like a lion. I will serve like Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Share the Journey

Share today’s lesson with someone who is seeking God’s direction or making important life decisions. Encourage one another to remember that the greatest question is not simply, “What does God want to give me?” but “What does God desire to accomplish through me?” Lives that seek His Kingdom first become instruments through which He blesses families, communities, and nations.

“The greatest discovery in the Christian life is not finding what God can do for us. It is discovering what God can accomplish through a life that is fully surrendered to Him.”
