Big Question

Have we become so focused on helping people succeed that we have forgotten to help them become who God created them to be?

Story

Shanti Secondary School stood on the outskirts of Pokhara, where students from nearby neighbourhoods arrived each morning carrying worn backpacks, exercise books, and dreams that stretched far beyond the classroom. Parents throughout the district hoped their children would one day become doctors, engineers, business owners, civil servants, or teachers. Education was widely regarded as the surest path towards a better future, and every examination carried enormous significance for families who had sacrificed greatly to keep their children in school.

Among the teaching staff, no one was more respected than Mrs. Anjana Rai. She had taught for nearly twenty-five years and was known for her discipline, organisation, and exceptionally high academic standards. Her students consistently achieved some of the best examination results in the province. School inspectors praised her methods, parents requested that their children be placed in her class, and younger teachers often looked to her for advice. Awards lined one shelf in her office, each recognising another year of educational excellence.

Mrs. Rai believed deeply in hard work. Every lesson was carefully prepared, every assignment thoroughly marked, and every report meticulously completed. She knew the academic strengths and weaknesses of every student. She could quickly identify who excelled in mathematics, who struggled with languages, who required additional tutoring, and who was likely to earn a university scholarship. Her records were remarkably detailed, and few teachers matched her commitment to helping students achieve outstanding results.

Years passed, and generation after generation moved through her classroom. Former students returned to thank her for helping them gain admission to prestigious universities or secure respected careers. Whenever people spoke about educational success in the district, Mrs. Rai’s name was mentioned with admiration. She had every reason to believe she had fulfilled her calling well.

Everything changed during the school’s twenty-fifth anniversary celebration.

Former students travelled from different parts of Nepal and from overseas to attend the reunion. As Mrs. Rai welcomed one group after another, she found herself listening to stories she had never expected to hear. One former student had become a successful entrepreneur yet quietly admitted that wealth had cost him his marriage. Another confessed that despite earning a respected professional position, he lived with constant anxiety and loneliness. One young woman spoke about years of depression that no one had recognised while she was still at school. Another former student shared how a teacher from another school—not academic success—had first taught him the importance of compassion, integrity, and serving others.

That evening Mrs. Rai returned home carrying an old box of class registers and report books she had kept throughout her career. One by one she opened them, reading names that immediately brought faces back to memory. Every page contained examination scores, attendance records, behaviour reports, and academic comments. She smiled as she remembered students who had worked hard and those who had overcome significant learning challenges.

Then a troubling thought settled upon her heart.

She knew every student’s grades.

She could not remember the burdens many of them had been carrying.

She knew who had passed every examination.

She did not know who had gone home each afternoon to broken families, financial hardship, fear, loneliness, or silent struggles that never appeared on a report card.

For the first time in twenty-five years, Mrs. Rai quietly asked herself a question no award had ever required her to answer.

“Have I prepared my students to pass examinations, or have I prepared them to live wisely?”

Mrs. Rai hardly slept that night. The reunion had filled her with gratitude, but it had also unsettled her in ways she could not explain. Long after the house had grown quiet, she remained seated at the dining table surrounded by old attendance registers, report cards, class photographs, and fading notebooks from students she had taught over the years. Every page testified to years of careful work. There were examination scores, classroom rankings, attendance percentages, discipline reports, and teachers’ comments. Everything expected of an excellent educator was there.

Yet as she slowly turned the pages, another reality became impossible to ignore. She knew which students had excelled in mathematics, science, and literature. She remembered who had represented the school in competitions and who had earned scholarships to universities. She even remembered the dates many of them had graduated. But she could not remember who had quietly carried grief after losing a parent, who had struggled with fear, who had gone home to constant conflict, or who had spent sleepless nights wondering whether life was worth living. Those battles had never appeared on examination papers, and she had never thought to ask about them.

The following Monday, Mrs. Rai returned to school with a question that refused to leave her heart. As students entered the classroom, they expected the usual routine. Exercise books were opened, revision notes were prepared, and everyone waited for the first lesson to begin. Instead of writing the day’s topic on the board, Mrs. Rai quietly turned to face the class and wrote a single sentence.

How is your heart today?

The classroom erupted with puzzled expressions. Some students smiled awkwardly. Others looked at one another, wondering whether it was a trick question. One boy whispered that perhaps their teacher had forgotten which lesson she was supposed to teach. After several moments of silence, a few students simply replied, “Fine,” while others nodded politely without saying a word. Mrs. Rai realised that she had spent years teaching her students how to answer examination questions, but they had never learned how to answer questions about their own lives.

She did not force the conversation. She simply thanked them, taught the day’s lesson, and dismissed the class as usual. The next Monday she asked the same question again. Then the Monday after that. Week after week the question remained unchanged. Gradually the atmosphere within the classroom began to shift. Students realised they were not being examined. They were being invited to speak honestly.

One morning a quiet girl raised her hand and admitted that she found it difficult to concentrate because her parents had been arguing every night. Another student confessed that he was terrified of disappointing his family if he failed his final examinations. A boy who was usually cheerful quietly shared that his father had recently lost his job, and he was considering leaving school to help support the family. One young girl spoke about being mocked by classmates because she struggled to read aloud. As each story emerged, the classroom became noticeably quieter. Students who had competed fiercely for the highest grades suddenly began seeing one another very differently.

Mrs. Rai listened far more than she spoke. She was surprised to discover that many problems solved themselves once people felt heard. Students who had rarely spoken to one another began encouraging each other after class. Those who excelled academically quietly offered to help classmates who were falling behind. Small acts of kindness started appearing without anyone being instructed to do so. The classroom was still committed to excellence, but something more important had begun to grow alongside achievement. Compassion was slowly replacing competition.

At the end of the school year, the examination results remained among the highest in the district. Parents congratulated the students, inspectors commended the school, and the headmaster once again praised Mrs. Rai’s outstanding work. This time, however, she measured success differently. The grades mattered, but they no longer told the whole story. She had watched fearful students become confident, lonely students find genuine friendships, and anxious students discover hope because someone had finally taken time to listen before trying to teach.

During the closing assembly, Mrs. Rai addressed the graduating class one final time. Looking across the faces of young men and women preparing to step into the next season of life, she smiled gently and said, “For many years I believed my responsibility was to fill your minds with knowledge. I now understand that education is incomplete unless it also teaches us how to care for people. Never become so busy pursuing success that you stop noticing the hearts of those walking beside you. The world has many intelligent people. What it desperately needs are wise and compassionate people.”

Years later, former students rarely spoke first about the examination scores they had achieved in Mrs. Rai’s classroom. Instead, they remembered the question that had quietly changed the way they looked at one another.

“How is your heart today?”

Kingdom Insight

Mrs. Rai eventually discovered that the greatest measure of a teacher is not simply the number of students who pass examinations but the number of lives that are shaped with wisdom, integrity, compassion, and truth. Academic success has tremendous value, yet knowledge alone cannot produce godly character. Information may fill the mind, but only truth applied to the heart transforms a life. That is why the Bible consistently points beyond intelligence to wisdom, beyond achievement to obedience, and beyond outward success to inward transformation.

Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus demonstrated this principle repeatedly. He certainly taught crowds, explained the Scriptures, answered difficult questions, and challenged false ideas. Yet He always saw the person before He addressed the problem. He noticed Zacchaeus hiding in a tree before anyone else cared about him. He saw the woman at the well beyond her broken relationships. He recognised the fears hidden behind Nicodemus’ questions and understood the sorrow carried by Mary and Martha before speaking words of comfort. Wherever Jesus went, people discovered that they were known before they were instructed, loved before they were corrected, and heard before they were challenged.

Modern society often measures success through results that can easily be counted—grades, promotions, salaries, attendance, influence, followers, and achievements. God certainly values diligence and faithful stewardship, but He measures success differently. He looks beyond performance into the condition of the heart. He asks whether we are growing in humility, faithfulness, love, mercy, wisdom, self-control, and obedience. Those qualities cannot be captured on a report card, yet they are the evidence of genuine spiritual maturity.

This lesson extends far beyond schools. Parents can become so focused on raising successful children that they overlook the fears their sons and daughters quietly carry. Employers may evaluate productivity without recognising exhaustion or discouragement among their staff. Churches may celebrate attendance and programmes while failing to notice members who are slowly withdrawing in silence. Even within our closest relationships, it is possible to know many facts about a person’s life without truly understanding what is happening in their heart.

Mrs. Rai’s question, “How is your heart today?”, gradually transformed her classroom because it reflected the heart of Christ. Genuine listening creates an environment where people feel safe enough to tell the truth about their struggles. Once people are heard, they become more willing to receive wisdom, correction, encouragement, and hope. Listening does not replace teaching; it prepares the soil in which truth can take root and bear lasting fruit.

Every disciple of Jesus is called to become more than a communicator of information. We are called to become people who notice others, ask thoughtful questions, listen with compassion, and point people toward Christ through both our words and our lives. The world has many experts who can transfer knowledge. The Kingdom of God advances through disciples who invest in people, helping them become all that God has created them to be.

Exploring Today’s Scriptures

The story of the Good Samaritan reminds us that loving our neighbour begins with seeing what others choose to ignore. The priest and the Levite noticed the injured man but continued on their journey. The Samaritan stopped. He interrupted his own plans, drew near, listened to the man’s need without asking whether he deserved help, and responded with practical compassion. His love was demonstrated not merely through sympathy but through sacrificial action.

Mrs. Rai experienced a similar awakening. For years she had looked at her students through the lens of academic achievement. Once she began listening to their hearts, she realised that many were carrying burdens no examination could ever reveal. Like the Samaritan, she learned that truly seeing people requires more than observation. It requires compassion that is willing to stop, listen, and respond.

Exodus 39 records the careful completion of the priestly garments and all the work of the tabernacle according to God’s instructions. Each person’s skill and obedience contributed to a greater purpose, and Moses blessed the workers when he saw that everything had been completed faithfully. This reminds us that every gift within the Body of Christ should be exercised with excellence, humility, and obedience to God.

Psalm 89 celebrates God’s faithfulness, covenant love, and sovereign rule, even while honestly wrestling with disappointment and unanswered questions. It reminds believers that Christian community must be grounded in God’s unchanging character. Whether serving in seasons of joy or difficulty, every member of Christ’s Body can remain faithful because God’s promises and steadfast love endure.

Commands to Obey

• Value people above performance.
• Take time to listen before offering advice.

• Create safe places where people can speak honestly.
• Invest intentionally in the next generation.

• Avoid measuring people only by achievements or results.
• Avoid assuming that a smiling face always reflects a peaceful heart.
• Avoid becoming too busy to notice those who are quietly struggling.
• Avoid correcting people before understanding their situation.
• Avoid comparing one person’s journey with another’s.
• Avoid neglecting opportunities to encourage and mentor others.
• Avoid valuing information above wisdom and character.
• Avoid forgetting that every person you meet is someone deeply loved by God.

Kingdom Action Step

This week, intentionally slow down one meaningful conversation. Whether you are speaking with your spouse, your child, a colleague, a neighbour, or a fellow believer, resist the temptation to rush toward solutions. Ask thoughtful questions, listen patiently, and allow the other person to finish speaking before you respond. Your willingness to listen may become the greatest encouragement they receive this week.

Choose one young person or one individual whom God has placed within your influence. Spend time encouraging them not only to pursue success, but also to pursue wisdom, integrity, humility, and faithfulness. Help them understand that while achievements may open doors, it is character that sustains a life of lasting influence.

Prayer

Personal
Heavenly Father, thank You for knowing me completely and loving me perfectly. Thank You that You see beyond my achievements, my failures, and the image I present to others. Forgive me for the times I have been more concerned with outward success than with the condition of my own heart or the hearts of those around me. Teach me to become more like Jesus, who always saw people with compassion, listened with patience, and spoke words that brought healing and hope. Fill me with Your wisdom so that my life may help others grow in faith, character, and love.

For Families, Schools and Communities
Lord, we pray for parents, teachers, mentors, youth leaders, and all who influence the next generation. Help them to nurture not only knowledge but also wisdom, humility, integrity, and compassion. May homes become places where children feel heard, schools become communities that value every student, and neighbourhoods become environments where people genuinely care for one another. Raise a generation whose hearts are firmly rooted in Your truth.

For Nepal
Father, we lift before You the people of Nepal. Bless its families, schools, universities, churches, and communities. Give wisdom to educators, strength to parents, and hope to young people facing uncertainty about the future. Raise disciple-makers throughout the nation who will model Christ’s love through faithful service, compassionate listening, and lives of integrity. May many come to know Jesus Christ and experience the transforming power of Your grace.

For South Asia
Lord, remember every nation throughout South Asia. Strengthen believers, encourage churches, and open doors for the Gospel where they remain closed. Protect those who faithfully follow Christ, equip them to make disciples with wisdom and courage, and raise communities that demonstrate Your love through practical service and genuine compassion.

Prayer for the Unreached
Father, we pray for every unreached people group throughout South Asia and across the nations of the world. Send labourers who will faithfully proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ with humility, wisdom, and love. Prepare hearts to receive Your Word, establish multiplying disciple-making communities, and let every language, tribe, and nation have the opportunity to hear and respond to the Gospel.

Daily Declaration

Today I choose to see people as Jesus sees them. I will value character above achievement, people above performance, and faithfulness above recognition. I will listen with compassion, encourage with wisdom, and speak words that bring life. I will invest in others with patience and humility, helping them grow into the people God has created them to become. I will see like an eagle. I will lead like a lion. I will serve like Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
