Learning to See

🌍 DAY 24 — The Ticket in the Coat Pocket

The coat had not been worn in twelve years.

It hung quietly at the far end of the wardrobe.

Unnoticed.

Untouched.

Forgotten.

At least that was what Michael believed.

The coat belonged to his father.

A heavy brown wool coat with worn elbows and brass buttons polished smooth by decades of use.

His father wore it every winter.

To church.

To work.

To football matches.

To family gatherings.

Photographs from nearly every season of Michael’s childhood seemed to include that coat.

Then his father died.

And the coat remained where it was.

For twelve years.

Nobody moved it.

Nobody needed it.

Nobody had the heart to give it away.

Life simply continued around it.

The wardrobe remained closed.

The coat remained hanging.

And time moved forward.

One Saturday afternoon, Michael finally decided it was time.

The family home was being sold.

Rooms needed clearing.

Boxes needed sorting.

Decisions needed making.

He spent most of the morning working through old belongings.

Books.

Tools.

Photographs.

Letters.

The ordinary treasures every family accumulates over a lifetime.

Eventually he opened the wardrobe.

The coat was still there.

Exactly where he remembered.

He reached out and touched the sleeve.

Dust rose gently into the sunlight.

For a moment he was ten years old again.

Standing beside his father after church.

Watching him button the coat against the winter wind.

Hearing his laugh.

Remembering his voice.

Memory has a strange way of collapsing time.

A single object can bridge decades.

Michael carefully removed the coat from its hanger.

The fabric felt heavier than he expected.

Older.

Yet strangely familiar.

He intended to place it directly into the donation pile.

Instead, habit intervened.

His father had always checked his pockets before hanging it up.

Always.

Without exception.

Michael smiled at the memory.

Then slipped his hand into the first pocket.

Nothing.

The second pocket contained an old handkerchief.

The third held a few coins.

Then he reached inside the inner pocket.

His fingers touched paper.

He frowned.

Carefully, he pulled it free.

A ticket.

Folded several times.

Yellowed with age.

The edges were worn.

The printing had faded.

For several seconds Michael simply stared at it.

It appeared to be a train ticket.

Dated nearly thirteen years earlier.

One year before his father’s death.

The destination surprised him.

Edinburgh.

His father had never mentioned visiting Edinburgh.

Not once.

The discovery sparked curiosity.

The ticket felt strangely out of place.

His father rarely traveled.

And when he did, he always talked about it afterward.

Yet Michael had no memory of this journey.

That evening he carried the ticket home.

Along with several boxes of family belongings.

The mystery lingered.

Why had his father gone there?

What had happened?

Why had he never mentioned it?

A few days later, while sorting through old papers, Michael found something else.

A notebook.

Not a diary.

Not exactly.

More like a collection of thoughts.

Ideas.

Prayers.

Reflections.

The sort of thing his father occasionally scribbled in during quiet moments.

Most entries were ordinary.

Bible verses.

Observations.

Reminders.

Then Michael found the date matching the train ticket.

His heart quickened.

The entry was brief.

Only a page and a half.

Yet it changed everything.

His father explained that he had received a letter several months earlier.

A letter from someone Michael had never heard of.

A man named Andrew.

The name meant nothing.

The story did.

Years before Michael was born, his father had worked with Andrew at a factory.

The two men became friends.

Then life separated them.

Different cities.

Different careers.

Different responsibilities.

Contact faded.

Eventually disappeared.

Thirty years passed.

Then came the letter.

Andrew was dying.

Cancer.

Advanced.

The doctors had exhausted their options.

He had one request.

Could his old friend come visit?

Michael continued reading.

His father described the struggle.

Work was busy.

Money was tight.

Travel felt inconvenient.

Several times he considered declining.

Several times he almost postponed the trip.

Then he wrote something underlined twice.

“If friendship matters only when convenient, it is not friendship.”

So he boarded the train.

And went.

The next pages described the visit.

The conversations.

The memories.

The laughter.

The tears.

The prayers.

The hospital room.

The goodbye.

The final handshake.

The final conversation.

The final opportunity.

Andrew died three weeks later.

Michael read the final paragraph slowly.

“I almost didn’t go.

Everything important tried to convince me it wasn’t urgent.

Now I realize it was one of the most important journeys of my life.”

The words lingered.

Michael sat quietly for a long time.

The room felt unusually still.

The ticket rested beside the notebook.

A small piece of paper.

Easy to overlook.

Easy to discard.

Yet somehow it had preserved a story.

A decision.

A lesson.

A reminder.

For days Michael found himself thinking about urgency.

Not the urgency of deadlines.

Or schedules.

Or business.

The urgency of relationships.

The opportunities that do not remain available forever.

The conversations postponed.

The phone calls delayed.

The visits rescheduled.

The encouragement never spoken.

Most people assume there will always be another opportunity.

Another week.

Another month.

Another year.

Sometimes there is.

Sometimes there isn’t.

His father understood something during that train journey.

Life is not measured only by what we accomplish.

It is also measured by who we love.

And whether we act while the opportunity still exists.

Years later, Michael framed the ticket.

Not because it was valuable.

Not because it was rare.

But because it reminded him of something essential.

A small decision had become a lasting memory.

A simple journey had become a sacred one.

The ticket remained on his office wall.

A quiet reminder.

Do not wait too long.

Call.

Visit.

Encourage.

Forgive.

Show up.

Some journeys cannot be taken tomorrow.

And perhaps God is asking us a question today:

Who have you been meaning to reach out to while assuming there will always be more time?

Pray for those who feel forgotten, isolated, or disconnected. Ask God to surround them with encouragement and care.

Pray for spiritual awakening throughout Scotland. Ask God to strengthen believers, renew churches, and raise disciple-makers.

Unreached Peoples

Pray that those who have never heard the Gospel will encounter Jesus Christ and that workers will be sent into the harvest.

I will not postpone love.

I will not ignore opportunities to encourage others.

God has given me this day.

I will use it wisely.

I will love intentionally.

I will serve faithfully.

I will see like an eagle.

I will lead like a lion.

I will serve like Christ.
