🌍 DAY 28 — The Watch That Lost Twenty Minutes

Everyone thought it was broken.

The old watch lost exactly twenty minutes every day.

Not nineteen.

Not twenty-one.

Twenty.

Every single day.

For years, nobody could explain it.

The watch belonged to Professor Viktor Stein, a retired horologist who lived in a small town near the Black Forest in Germany.

Most people in town knew him simply as “the watchmaker.”

Not because he still repaired watches professionally.

Because he never stopped studying them.

His workshop contained hundreds of clocks and watches collected over a lifetime.

Grandfather clocks.

Pocket watches.

Marine chronometers.

Railway clocks.

Tiny mechanical masterpieces from every corner of Europe.

Time fascinated him.

Not merely how it was measured.

How it was understood.

One watch fascinated him more than all the others.

A silver pocket watch inherited from his grandfather.

The watch was beautiful.

Elegant.

Perfectly crafted.

Yet it carried a flaw.

Every day it lost twenty minutes.

Any apprentice could have told him to repair it.

Any customer would have demanded it.

Yet Viktor never corrected it.

The watch remained exactly as it was.

Visitors found this confusing.

Students found it even more confusing.

One afternoon a young apprentice named Lukas finally asked.

“Why don’t you fix it?”

Viktor smiled.

He had heard the question many times before.

“Perhaps it doesn’t need fixing.”

Lukas looked at him as though he had lost his mind.

“It’s a watch.”

“Yes.”

“It tells the wrong time.”

“Yes.”

“Then it’s broken.”

The old man laughed.

A deep, warm laugh.

“That’s what everyone thinks.”

The answer frustrated Lukas immediately.

But Viktor refused to explain.

At least not then.

Years passed.

Lukas continued studying under him.

The strange watch remained on the workbench.

Every day it lost twenty minutes.

Every day Viktor wound it carefully.

Every day it accompanied him wherever he went.

The mystery remained.

Until one winter evening.

Snow drifted gently outside the workshop windows.

The streets were quiet.

Most people had gone home.

Only Viktor and Lukas remained.

The old watch sat on the bench between them.

Lukas pointed toward it.

“You’re eighty-two years old.”

Viktor nodded.

“You’ve had that watch longer than I’ve been alive.”

Another nod.

“If you’re ever going to explain it, now seems like a good time.”

For several moments the old man said nothing.

Then he picked up the watch.

Turned it over in his hands.

And smiled.

“My grandfather gave me this when I was twelve.”

The workshop grew quiet.

“It belonged to his father before him.”

Lukas listened carefully.

“The watch lost twenty minutes every day back then too.”

Now the mystery deepened.

“You mean it has always been wrong?”

Viktor shook his head.

“No.”

The old man leaned back.

“It has always been teaching.”

Lukas waited.

The explanation finally came.

When Viktor was a boy, he became obsessed with punctuality.

Schedules.

Deadlines.

Appointments.

Efficiency.

Everything revolved around time.

He measured life constantly.

How much time remained.

How much time was wasted.

How much time was gained.

His grandfather noticed.

One afternoon, after watching the boy anxiously check clocks for the tenth time, the old man handed him the watch.

Then he said something unusual.

“Carry this every day.”

Viktor obeyed.

Soon he discovered the problem.

The watch lost twenty minutes daily.

Frustrated, he complained.

His grandfather simply smiled.

Then spoke words Viktor never forgot.

“If your life depends entirely on your watch, you will miss what matters.”

At first, the lesson made no sense.

But years passed.

Gradually he understood.

The watch forced him to stop trusting time completely.

It forced him to pay attention.

To people.

To moments.

To conversations.

To life itself.

Because life cannot always be measured.

The most important moments rarely fit neatly into schedules.

A conversation that changes a life.

A prayer that restores hope.

A sunset that silences the soul.

A child asking an unexpected question.

A friend who needs listening.

Love does not operate efficiently.

Neither does grace.

Neither does God.

Lukas remained silent.

The old man continued.

“My grandfather believed modern people would become prisoners of clocks.”

He smiled.

“He was right.”

The statement lingered.

The workshop seemed unusually still.

Outside, snow continued falling.

Inside, the old watch ticked softly.

Twenty minutes behind.

As always.

Viktor pointed toward it.

“People think time is the most valuable thing they possess.”

Lukas nodded.

“Isn’t it?”

The old man considered the question.

Then answered.

“No.”

A pause followed.

“Attention is.”

The apprentice frowned.

Viktor continued.

“Most people have enough time for what matters.”

Another pause.

“They simply give their attention elsewhere.”

The words landed heavily.

Because they were true.

People often blame time for problems caused by priorities.

They say they lack time for prayer.

Time for family.

Time for discipleship.

Time for God.

Yet somehow time exists for endless distractions.

The watch had been teaching the same lesson for generations.

Time matters.

But attention matters more.

Years later, after Viktor’s funeral, Lukas inherited the watch.

Several collectors offered large sums of money for it.

He refused.

Several master watchmakers offered to repair it.

He refused that too.

The watch remained exactly as it was.

Twenty minutes slow.

Perfectly imperfect.

Still teaching.

Still reminding.

Still asking the same question.

What are you paying attention to?

Because life is not ultimately measured by how efficiently we manage our schedules.

It is measured by what captures our hearts.

Many people race through life trying to save minutes.

Only to lose moments.

The old watch understood something profound.

Twenty minutes could be lost.

A life could not.

And perhaps God is asking us a question today:

What truly deserves more of your attention than it is currently receiving?

Pray that your family will prioritize God, one another, and the things of eternal significance.

Pray for people overwhelmed by busyness and distraction. Ask God to draw their attention back to Him.

Pray for spiritual awakening throughout Germany. Ask God to strengthen believers, renew churches, and raise disciple-makers.

Unreached Peoples

Pray that those who have never heard the Gospel will encounter Jesus Christ and that workers will be sent into the harvest.
