Big Question: How can a nation surrounded by natural wealth recover when ordinary families struggle to meet basic needs?
Each evening, Teresa placed five plates on the table even though only three members of the family remained at home. The two empty places belonged to her eldest children, Andrés and Valentina, who had left Venezuela in search of work. Their earnings helped the household purchase food and medicine, but their absence could be felt during every meal.
Teresa’s husband, Rafael, had once worked near an oil facility. He remembered a time when the industry represented stability, national pride, and the promise of development. Yet the family now lived beside evidence of wealth while struggling with irregular income, rising costs, and uncertainty.
Their teenage son, Samuel, could not understand how a nation rich in oil, fertile land, water, minerals, professional skill, and human creativity could contain so many empty tables. Rafael explained that resources alone do not feed a nation. Wealth must pass through honest leadership, functioning institutions, productive businesses, reliable infrastructure, responsible management, and systems that serve the public.
One afternoon, the family’s church organised a shared meal. Some brought rice, others vegetables, bread, cooking oil, or whatever they could spare. The portions were modest, but no family ate alone. The church also connected unemployed members with farming cooperatives, repair work, healthcare assistance, and small-business training.
A farmer named Luis attended the gathering. He told Samuel that Venezuela should not depend only upon what lay beneath the ground. The nation also possessed soil, rivers, skilled workers, universities, entrepreneurs, artists, and young people capable of creating new industries. Oil could provide revenue, but it should never replace agriculture, enterprise, manufacturing, education, or innovation.
The pastor warned the congregation against reducing every national problem to a political argument. Leaders and policies mattered greatly, but ordinary citizens also needed truth, responsibility, forgiveness, integrity, and courage. National recovery would require more than changing personalities. It would require rebuilding trust, institutions, productivity, and a shared commitment to the common good.
Migration had created another wound. Families depended upon money sent from abroad while grieving the loss of daily relationships. Doctors, teachers, engineers, businesspeople, artisans, pastors, and young professionals had carried their abilities into other nations. Many longed to return, but they needed confidence that their children could live safely and build stable futures.
Teresa never criticised her children for leaving. She understood why they had gone, yet she prayed that migration would one day become a choice rather than an escape from necessity. She wanted the empty places at the table filled again, not because overseas relatives had failed, but because the nation had recovered enough to welcome their gifts home.
Months later, Samuel joined the farming cooperative. He learned irrigation, food processing, bookkeeping, and distribution. The work was difficult and could not solve the national crisis, but it changed his sense of helplessness. He realised that rebuilding a nation begins when people stop waiting for distant systems to do everything and start restoring what lies within their reach.
The first harvest was small. Teresa prepared part of it for dinner and placed food on all five plates before remembering that two chairs were still empty. This time, however, the sight did not produce only sorrow. The food before her represented honest work, cooperation, and a beginning.
Venezuela’s empty tables cannot be filled by slogans. They require peace, accountable leadership, productive institutions, agriculture, enterprise, healthcare, education, reliable infrastructure, and the restoration of trust. They also require a Church that serves people without becoming captive to political hatred.
The oilfield may symbolise national wealth, but the family table reveals whether that wealth has become human wellbeing. A nation is not truly prosperous until children are nourished, workers are valued, families can remain together, and resources are stewarded for the benefit of generations.
Consider the difference between possessing resources and stewarding them well. Natural wealth can be wasted when corruption, poor planning, division, or institutional weakness interrupts its benefit.
Reflect on the emotional cost of migration. Money sent home may sustain families, but empty chairs reveal losses that financial support cannot fully replace.
Ask God to move Venezuela beyond political hostility towards truth, justice, responsible leadership, productivity, and reconciliation.
Psalm 33:12: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”
Proverbs 29:2: “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice.”
Isaiah 58:10: “If you extend your soul to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light shall dawn in the darkness.”

Psalm 126:5: “Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy.”
Venezuela possesses vast natural resources, fertile agricultural regions, educated professionals, cultural creativity, and a large diaspora. Yet prolonged economic and institutional difficulties have placed pressure upon food security, healthcare, employment, infrastructure, and family life.
Migration has helped many households survive through remittances, but it has also separated parents, children, spouses, and ageing relatives. The departure of skilled professionals can further weaken essential services and national productivity.
Sustainable restoration requires responsible resource management, strong institutions, productive agriculture, private enterprise, education, healthcare, transparent government, and peaceful political engagement.
Churches can contribute by feeding families, supporting small businesses, discipling leaders, caring for migrants and relatives left behind, and refusing to deepen political hatred.
We thank God for Venezuela’s families, churches, workers, farmers, healthcare professionals, educators, artists, entrepreneurs, and young people.
We thank Him for diaspora communities that continue supporting relatives and for neighbours who share food, medicine, skills, and encouragement.
We also thank God for every farm, business, church, school, and community initiative preserving hope and rebuilding productive life.
Ask God whether political anger has weakened your compassion or prevented you from praying fairly for an entire nation.
Listen for a Venezuelan family, migrant, farmer, pastor, healthcare worker, young person, or leader He may be asking you to carry in prayer.
What I sense God saying to me:
Support a credible ministry or initiative providing food, healthcare, discipleship, agricultural training, entrepreneurship, or family assistance to Venezuelans.
Contact someone living far from home and offer encouragement. Remember the relatives who migrated and those who remained behind.

Father, we thank You for Venezuela, for its people, land, rivers, oil, farms, cities, villages, churches, skills, creativity, and national potential.
Provide food, medicine, employment, housing, and stability for families under economic pressure. Strengthen farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, teachers, healthcare professionals, and all who labour honestly.
Give wisdom, humility, justice, and integrity to national and local leaders. Expose corruption, misuse of resources, political manipulation, and every decision that places private power above public wellbeing.
Restore productive institutions, agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare, education, manufacturing, enterprise, and responsible management of oil and natural resources.
Remember families separated through migration. Preserve marriages, strengthen parents and children, comfort ageing relatives, and create conditions in which skilled citizens can return or contribute meaningfully from abroad.
Protect Venezuelan migrants from exploitation, trafficking, discrimination, dangerous journeys, and abusive labour. Bless the nations and communities receiving them with wisdom and compassion.
Strengthen the Church to remain united under Christ. Deliver congregations from political captivity, fear, rivalry, and hatred. Make them centres of food provision, discipleship, healing, enterprise, reconciliation, and hope.
Raise a generation that will reject corruption and rebuild with integrity. Let empty tables be filled, families reunited, farms productive, hospitals strengthened, businesses restored, and communities renewed.
Let Your Kingdom come across Venezuela and let Your will be done in every state, city, village, institution, church, family, and heart.

I declare that Venezuela’s oil, land, water, knowledge, creativity, and human talent will be stewarded responsibly for the benefit of its people.
Families will reconnect, the diaspora will contribute to restoration, and young people will discover reasons to build rather than despair.
The empty table will be filled through righteousness, honest work, wise leadership, national reconciliation, and the sustaining grace of God.

The true measure of prosperity is not what lies beneath the ground, but whether families can eat, work, learn, heal, and remain together.
Carry Venezuela in prayer today. Remember the mother dividing a meal, the professional living abroad, the farmer trying to plant, and the young person deciding whether hope remains.
