Big Question: How does faith survive when people have learned to speak carefully, live with scarcity, and carry their deepest hopes quietly?
Abuela Mercedes sang only when the windows were closed. Her voice was not loud, but every note carried the weight of memory. The song had been taught to her by her mother during a difficult season, and she had sung it while raising children, waiting in long queues, stretching small meals, and praying for relatives who had left Cuba.
Her granddaughter, Camila, first heard the song one evening when the electricity went out. The family gathered near the open doorway, hoping to catch a breeze. Without the usual noise of television and machinery, Mercedes began singing about God making a path through the sea and keeping a lamp alive during the night.
Camila asked why she had never heard the song in church. Mercedes explained that some songs become private shelters. People carry them quietly because they hold prayers, disappointments, courage, and truths that may be difficult to express openly.
Camila loved music and dreamed of recording her own songs, but she often wondered whether her future remained on the island. Friends spoke about leaving in search of opportunity, and several relatives already lived abroad. Her parents did not want her to go, yet they understood the frustration of young people who possessed gifts but struggled to find the resources, freedom, or pathways required to develop them.
Her church met in a modest building and owned little equipment, but it had become a place where families shared food, encouraged the elderly, mentored young people, and prayed for those living abroad. The pastor taught that faithfulness was not passive acceptance. Christians could honour their nation while praying honestly about hardship, injustice, fear, and the need for change.
One Sunday, Camila introduced her grandmother’s song during worship. She added a new verse asking God to restore families, open doors for young people, strengthen the Church, and let truth be spoken without hatred. Mercedes listened from the second row, weeping quietly.
The congregation joined the chorus. Some sang for children who had emigrated, others for businesses that had failed, and others for opportunities they had waited years to receive. The song did not deny scarcity or separation. It declared that these realities would not have the final word.
Cuba possesses remarkable musical, artistic, educational, agricultural, and cultural gifts. Its people are known for creativity, resilience, strong relationships, and the ability to create beauty even when resources are limited. Yet resilience should never become a reason to normalise hardship or silence legitimate longing.
Economic pressure reaches deeply into family life. When income cannot meet daily needs, people may postpone plans, depend upon relatives abroad, or consider migration. Separation can provide financial relief while leaving emotional wounds, ageing parents, divided households, and children shaped by prolonged absence.
The Church must minister within these realities with wisdom and courage. It is called to proclaim salvation, serve practical needs, disciple young people, strengthen marriages, care for the elderly, and speak truth without becoming an instrument of hatred or political ambition.
Freedom in Christ begins within the heart, but it does not make external injustice irrelevant. The Gospel teaches people to reject fear, deception, oppression, corruption, and every system that denies human dignity. It also calls them to forgive, pursue peace, and refuse to become controlled by bitterness.
After the service, Camila recorded the song on an old phone. She sent it to relatives living in different countries. Within days, voices returned from abroad, adding harmonies and new verses. The family that could no longer gather around one table was reunited through a song.
Mercedes realised that the song had survived because each generation had received it and made it speak to its own circumstances. Faith survives in the same way. It is preserved through memory, but it remains alive through fresh obedience.
Cuba’s future will not be built by silence, despair, or the departure of every gifted young person. It will be built when truth and mercy meet, families are strengthened, leaders serve with integrity, creativity is released, and churches disciple people who can rebuild their communities.
The song that survived the silence had become louder, not because every problem had disappeared, but because hope had found another generation willing to sing.
Consider the prayers, songs, testimonies, and Scriptures that carried previous generations through hardship. Ask whether you have received their faith merely as history or as an inheritance requiring fresh obedience.
Reflect on families separated by migration and economic pressure. Provision sent from abroad may sustain a household, but money cannot replace presence, relationship, and shared life.
Pray for Cuban believers to remain courageous, compassionate, truthful, and free from both fear and political hatred.
Psalm 40:3: “He has put a new song in my mouth—praise to our God.”

Cuba has contributed significantly to music, literature, education, sport, healthcare, agriculture, and Caribbean culture. Its people possess strong creative gifts and family traditions, while Cuban communities abroad remain closely connected to relatives and national life.
Economic difficulties, limited opportunity, migration, shortages, and social restrictions have placed sustained pressure upon many households. Young people may struggle between remaining close to family and pursuing opportunity elsewhere.
Churches play an important role in preserving hope, strengthening families, serving communities, and forming disciples who can contribute to national renewal. Their witness must combine prayer, truth, practical compassion, reconciliation, and spiritual courage.
Cuba’s transformation requires leaders and citizens committed to dignity, honest institutions, economic opportunity, freedom of conscience, peaceful engagement, and the wellbeing of every community.
We thank God for Cuba’s people, creativity, music, families, churches, educators, healthcare workers, farmers, artists, and communities.
We thank Him for believers who continue worshipping, serving neighbours, mentoring young people, and caring for vulnerable families despite limited resources.
We also thank God for the Cuban diaspora and for the prayers, skills, finances, and relationships through which families remain connected across borders.
Ask God whether fear, disappointment, or prolonged waiting has silenced your worship. Invite Him to place a new song of faith and obedience within you.
Listen for a Cuban family, church, young person, artist, worker, or leader whom He may be asking you to carry in prayer. Consider whether you can encourage someone separated from family or support a ministry serving under difficult conditions.

Father, we thank You for Cuba, for its people, families, churches, creativity, music, cities, farms, coastlines, and influence throughout the world.
Provide for households facing economic pressure, shortages, unemployment, and uncertainty. Bless workers, farmers, healthcare professionals, educators, entrepreneurs, artists, and all who labour honestly to support their families.
Remember families separated through migration. Preserve marriages, strengthen relationships between parents and children, comfort ageing relatives, and guide those deciding whether to remain, return, or build a life elsewhere.
We pray for Cuba’s leaders and institutions. Grant wisdom, humility, justice, and integrity. Remove corruption, fear, oppression, and every system that weakens human dignity or prevents people from using their gifts responsibly.
Strengthen the Church. Give pastors courage, believers unity, and congregations the resources to disciple young people, serve communities, care for the elderly, and proclaim Christ faithfully.
Release the creativity of Cuba’s young people. Open pathways for education, employment, enterprise, technology, agriculture, art, ministry, and responsible leadership.
Protect the nation from political hatred and social division. Let truth be spoken with courage, justice pursued without vengeance, and reconciliation built without denying legitimate wounds.
Place a new song within Cuba—a song of salvation, freedom, family restoration, righteous leadership, opportunity, and hope. Let Your Kingdom come in every province, city, village, church, institution, family, and heart.

Today, I declare that Cuba belongs to the Lord and that fear, scarcity, separation, and silence will not determine its future.
I declare provision over families, opportunity over young people, courage over churches, wisdom over leaders, and freedom over every heart.
I declare that Cuban creativity will not be buried. Artists, workers, entrepreneurs, pastors, educators, and professionals will use their gifts to serve their communities and glorify God.
Families separated across nations will remain connected, relationships will be restored, and the prayers of previous generations will become songs of hope in the mouths of their children.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
A song survives when someone chooses to remember it, sing it, and pass it forward. Faith also survives through people who refuse to let hardship silence their worship or obedience.
Carry Cuba in prayer today. Remember its families, churches, young people, leaders, workers, artists, and diaspora.
Then pass one testimony of God’s faithfulness to another person.
