Big Question: How do we value human life?

The letter arrived on a Monday morning.

For nearly ten years, Dr. Miriam Hassan had worked in the same regional hospital. The facility served a vast area that included farming communities, fishing villages, isolated settlements, and rapidly growing towns. Resources were often limited. Equipment occasionally failed. Staff shortages were common. Yet despite the challenges, she loved her work.

Most days were unpredictable.

A routine clinic could suddenly become an emergency. A quiet afternoon could be interrupted by an accident. Newborn babies entered the world while grieving families said goodbye to loved ones. Joy and sorrow frequently occupied neighbouring rooms.

It was demanding work.

Meaningful work.

Sacred work.

The letter sitting on her desk represented something many of her colleagues dreamed about.

A prestigious hospital in a major international city had offered her a position. The salary was several times greater than what she currently earned. The facilities were modern. The opportunities for research and advancement were significant. Friends congratulated her. Family members encouraged her to accept the offer.

From a professional perspective, the decision appeared obvious.

Yet something troubled her.

Over the following weeks, she carried the letter with her while continuing her normal responsibilities. She visited patients. Conducted consultations. Assisted surgeries. Met worried parents. Comforted grieving families. Delivered difficult news. Celebrated recoveries.

The more she reflected, the more complicated the decision became.

One afternoon, she treated a young fisherman who had travelled several hours by boat after suffering a serious injury. Without access to timely medical care, the outcome could have been very different. A few days later, she met a mother who had brought her child from a remote village for treatment. The journey had required considerable sacrifice, but the family had few alternatives.

These encounters were not unusual.

They happened every week.

In many communities throughout Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, access to healthcare remained uneven. Some regions enjoyed world-class facilities and highly specialised services. Others struggled with shortages of doctors, nurses, medicines, equipment, infrastructure, and funding.

The differences could be dramatic.

One evening, while reviewing patient notes after a particularly long day, Miriam found herself thinking about a conversation she had once shared with an elderly physician who had mentored her early in her career.

At the time, she had asked him what he considered the most important lesson in medicine.

She expected him to mention knowledge.

Or skill.

Or experience.

Instead, he had surprised her.

“Never forget that every patient is someone’s entire world,” he said.

The words had remained with her for years.

Now they returned with renewed clarity.

Every patient represented a story.

A family.

A future.

A life of immeasurable value.

Several months later, Miriam attended a healthcare conference bringing together professionals from across the region. Discussions covered medical innovation, disease prevention, workforce shortages, public health systems, emerging technologies, and healthcare access.

The presentations were informative.

The statistics were important.

Yet one speaker shifted the entire conversation.

Instead of beginning with data, she shared a story.

She described a child whose life had been saved because a nurse refused to give up.

She described a surgeon who travelled regularly to underserved communities.

She described volunteers delivering healthcare to isolated populations.

Then she asked a question.

“What makes healthcare different from other professions?”

The answer emerged gradually.

Healthcare is ultimately about people.

Technology matters.

Research matters.

Infrastructure matters.

But at its heart, healthcare is an expression of human dignity.

It reflects what societies believe about the value of life.

When Miriam returned home, her decision became clearer.

She eventually declined the international offer.

Not because it was a bad opportunity.

It was an excellent one.

But because she believed her work was not finished.

There were still communities needing care.

Patients needing treatment.

Young doctors needing mentorship.

Lives needing hope.

Years later, when people asked why she stayed, Miriam often smiled before answering.

“Because every life matters,” she would say.

It sounded simple.

Yet perhaps few truths are more important.

Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, healthcare professionals serve millions of people every day. They work in major hospitals and small clinics. In cities and remote villages. During crises and ordinary moments. Their work often goes unnoticed, yet it reflects something deeply aligned with the heart of God.

The healing of the sick.

The protection of life.

The restoration of hope.

Because the way a society treats its most vulnerable people reveals much about what it truly values.

And every human life carries immeasurable worth.

Understanding the Issue

Healthcare remains one of the most important challenges and opportunities across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. While many nations have achieved remarkable progress in medical science, disease prevention, public health, and healthcare delivery, significant disparities remain. Millions of people continue to face barriers related to affordability, access, workforce shortages, infrastructure limitations, and geographic isolation.

Healthcare is about more than treating illness. It involves prevention, education, mental health, maternal care, child health, emergency response, rehabilitation, and the protection of human dignity. Effective healthcare systems strengthen families, communities, economies, and nations.

The Kingdom of God consistently demonstrates compassion toward the sick, vulnerable, and suffering. Followers of Christ are called to value every human life and support efforts that promote healing, dignity, and human flourishing.

Reasons to Thank God

• Thank God for doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, researchers, and caregivers.
• Thank God for advances in medicine and public health.
• Thank God for hospitals, clinics, and healthcare ministries serving communities.
• Thank God for lives restored through treatment, care, and compassion.
• Thank God for the value and dignity He gives to every human life.

Prayer

Father, we pray for doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, researchers, caregivers, volunteers, and public health leaders throughout Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. Strengthen them physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Grant wisdom, endurance, compassion, and protection as they serve others.

We pray for communities lacking adequate healthcare services. Open doors for improved access, training, infrastructure, medicines, and resources. Bring healing to those who are sick, comfort to those who are suffering, and hope to those who feel forgotten.

May Your Kingdom come through acts of compassion, healing, service, and dignity. Help societies recognise the value of every human life and respond with wisdom, justice, and love. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Today I affirm the value and dignity of every human life. I will choose compassion over indifference, service over selfishness, and hope over despair. By God’s grace, I will become a source of encouragement, healing, and care wherever He places me.
