Kingdom Focus: Economy, Prosperity and Inequality in Oceania, Asia and the Middle East
Big Question: Who gets left behind when nations prosper?
The city had never been richer.
At least, that was what the newspapers said.
New skyscrapers seemed to appear every few months. International companies established regional offices. Construction cranes dominated the skyline. Luxury apartments rose where older buildings once stood. Restaurants remained full. Airports grew busier. Investors praised the city’s economic growth and development.
Government reports celebrated record levels of investment. Business leaders spoke enthusiastically about opportunity. Economic analysts described the city as one of the fastest-growing regions in the world.
By almost every measurable standard, the city was succeeding.
Yet not everyone experienced the success in the same way.
Every morning before dawn, an elderly fruit seller named Hassan pushed his wooden cart through the streets toward the central market. He had worked there for more than thirty years. From the same corner stall, he had watched generations grow up, businesses open and close, and neighbourhoods transform beyond recognition.
In many ways, he knew the city better than the experts who analysed it.
Because he knew its people.
Over the years, Hassan noticed something changing.
The city was becoming wealthier, but many ordinary families seemed to be struggling more than before. Housing costs increased. Food prices rose. Transportation became more expensive. Small businesses found it difficult to compete with larger corporations. Young couples delayed starting families because they could not afford homes. Elderly residents worried about rising expenses.
The prosperity everyone talked about seemed unevenly distributed.
One afternoon, while arranging fruit at his stall, Hassan met a young university graduate named Lina. She had completed her studies with distinction and was searching for work. Like many young people, she carried both hope and uncertainty about the future.
As they talked, she shared her frustration.
“Everywhere I look, people say the economy is growing,” she said. “But many of my friends are struggling to find opportunities. Some have left the country. Others work jobs unrelated to their education. Some are simply trying to survive.”
Hassan listened carefully.
Then he pointed toward the market.
“Do you see all these stalls?” he asked.
Lina nodded.
“A healthy market is not measured only by how much money changes hands. It is measured by whether people can participate. If only a few prosper while many struggle, eventually the market begins forgetting who it exists to serve.”
The comment stayed with her.
Several months later, Lina began working for an organisation studying economic development across Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East. Her role allowed her to travel extensively. She visited thriving cities, remote villages, industrial centres, agricultural communities, and rapidly expanding urban regions.
Everywhere she went, she encountered the same tension.
Economic growth often brought tremendous benefits. Infrastructure improved. Healthcare expanded. Education became more accessible. Businesses created jobs. New technologies transformed industries. Millions of people experienced rising living standards.
Yet growth also created difficult questions.
Who benefits most?
Who benefits least?
Who is being overlooked?
Who remains excluded from opportunity?
In one community she visited, local fishermen struggled because environmental changes affected traditional livelihoods. In another, farmers faced increasing costs despite strong national economic performance. In a growing city, young professionals earned higher salaries than previous generations but found housing increasingly unaffordable. Elsewhere, rural communities felt disconnected from development occurring in major urban centres.
Each story revealed a similar truth.
Economic success is not only about growth.
It is also about inclusion.
One evening, during a regional conference, Lina listened as an economist addressed government officials, business leaders, educators, and community representatives.
After presenting various statistics, graphs, and projections, he concluded with a statement that captured the attention of the room.
“The true test of prosperity,” he said, “is not how wealthy a nation becomes. The true test is whether ordinary people can build hopeful futures within it.”
The audience remained silent.
Because everyone understood the significance of what had been said.
Scripture repeatedly reflects this concern. Throughout both the Old and New Testaments, God expresses deep concern for the poor, the vulnerable, the worker, the widow, the orphan, the foreigner, and those living at the margins of society. Economic activity is not condemned. Wealth itself is not condemned. Rather, God consistently calls people to steward resources responsibly, pursue justice, create opportunity, and care for those who might otherwise be forgotten.
Years later, Lina returned to the market where her conversation with Hassan had begun.
The city had continued growing.
New buildings filled the skyline.
Businesses thrived.
Yet she now understood something she had not understood before.
An economy is ultimately about people.
Not numbers.
Not reports.
Not statistics.
People.
Families trying to build better lives.
Workers seeking dignity.
Entrepreneurs creating opportunity.
Communities pursuing hope.
The question remains.
When nations prosper, who gets left behind?
And what kind of prosperity does God’s Kingdom invite us to pursue?
Deuteronomy 15:7-11
Proverbs 14:31
Luke 12:15
Across Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, economies are experiencing significant transformation. Many nations have achieved remarkable progress in infrastructure, technology, education, healthcare, trade, and investment. Millions of people have been lifted out of poverty, and new opportunities continue to emerge.
At the same time, economic inequality remains a challenge. Differences in access to education, employment, housing, healthcare, capital, technology, and opportunity can leave some communities behind. Sustainable prosperity requires not only growth but also inclusion, stewardship, justice, and long-term investment in people.
The Kingdom of God calls us to see economic life through the lens of human dignity. Prosperity should strengthen families, create opportunity, encourage stewardship, and enable communities to flourish together.
Identify one practical way to support someone seeking economic opportunity. This may involve mentoring, encouragement, training, networking, employment assistance, or financial generosity.
My Action Step: __________________________
Father, we pray for the economies of Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. Bless businesses, workers, farmers, entrepreneurs, educators, innovators, and leaders who contribute to economic wellbeing. Grant wisdom to governments and institutions as they seek to create environments where people can flourish.
Help communities address poverty, inequality, unemployment, and barriers to opportunity. Raise up leaders who pursue economic growth with justice, stewardship, and compassion. May prosperity benefit not only a few but many. Let Your Kingdom come through systems that honour human dignity and create pathways for hope and flourishing.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Today I choose to steward resources wisely, pursue generosity faithfully, and value people above profit. By God’s grace, I will help create opportunity, encourage dignity, and contribute to the flourishing of others.
