At seventy-eight years old, Samuel had learned that some prayers take longer to answer than most people expect.
When he was a young man, he imagined life would unfold differently. He assumed that if God gave a vision, the results would quickly follow. If people prayed faithfully, revival would come within months. If missionaries worked hard, entire regions would be transformed within a few years. If churches obeyed the Great Commission, nations would soon turn to Christ.
Age had taught him otherwise.
Looking back over five decades of ministry, he could identify many seasons when progress seemed painfully slow. There were years when the number of setbacks appeared greater than the number of victories. Some communities remained resistant to the Gospel. Some churches struggled to survive. Some regions experienced conflict, political instability, persecution, disasters, or economic hardship. More than once, Samuel had wondered whether his prayers were accomplishing anything at all.
Yet he never stopped praying.
Every morning before sunrise, he carried the same worn notebook onto the veranda of his small home. Its pages contained names of nations, cities, people groups, church leaders, missionaries, students, families, and communities he had prayed for over many years. Some entries had been written decades earlier. Others were recent. Many of the names belonged to people he had never met.
One particular page always caught his attention.
It contained a list of islands scattered across the Pacific Ocean.
He first wrote those names during a mission conference nearly forty years earlier. A speaker had shared stories about communities isolated by geography, limited resources, and vast distances. Samuel remembered feeling overwhelmed. The needs seemed enormous. The workers seemed few. The challenges appeared impossible.
After the meeting ended, he copied the names into his notebook and began praying.
At first, he expected reports to arrive quickly.
They did not.
Years passed with little visible change.
Then one day he received a letter.
It came from a missionary serving on one of the islands he had prayed for. The letter described a small group of believers gathering regularly for Bible study. It wasn’t a large congregation. There were no dramatic headlines. Yet for Samuel, it felt like the first green shoot emerging from ground that had seemed barren for years.
Several years later another report arrived.
Then another.
Then another.
Gradually a pattern emerged.
Churches were being planted.
Scriptures were being translated.
Local leaders were being trained.
Young believers were sharing their faith.
Communities were changing.
What had once seemed impossible was slowly becoming reality.
The same thing happened elsewhere.
Reports emerged from regions of Asia where believers met quietly in homes and workplaces. New discipleship groups appeared in cities that many considered spiritually resistant. University students began gathering for prayer. Families started studying Scripture together. Local believers carried the Gospel into communities outsiders could never easily access.
In parts of the Middle East, stories surfaced of individuals encountering Christ through dreams, friendships, acts of compassion, and personal study of Scripture. Small fellowships began appearing where few expected them. Men and women who had never entered a church building found themselves searching for answers and discovering Jesus.
Not every story ended happily.
Some believers faced persecution.
Some communities experienced setbacks.
Some regions remained difficult and resistant.
Yet through it all, God continued working.
The older Samuel became, the more he realised that many Christians made the same mistake.
They focused entirely on what was wrong.
They noticed conflict but missed courage.
They saw darkness but overlooked light.
They measured the size of the problem while forgetting the greatness of God.
One autumn afternoon, Samuel travelled to visit a friend who lived in a farming community several hours away. After lunch they walked together along a ridge overlooking a vast valley. Fields stretched toward the horizon in every direction. Some areas had already been harvested. Others remained untouched.
The sight stirred an old memory.
He remembered Jesus saying, “Lift up your eyes and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.”
For years Samuel had read that verse as an instruction.
That day he saw something else.
It was also an invitation.
An invitation to see what God sees.
To look beyond headlines.
Beyond statistics.
Beyond discouragement.
Beyond delay.
And beyond appearances.
The harvest had not disappeared simply because some people failed to notice it.
God was already at work.
He had been working all along.
As the sun began to set, Samuel stood quietly overlooking the valley. He thought about the islands he had prayed for, the villages he had visited, the believers he had met, the missionaries he had encouraged, and the countless prayers recorded in the notebook resting beside him.
Then he smiled.
Not because every prayer had been answered exactly as he expected.
Not because every challenge had disappeared.
Not because the work was finished.
He smiled because he finally understood something that had taken him most of his life to learn.
The story of the nations is not ultimately a story of human failure.
It is a story of God’s faithfulness.
And the harvest beyond the horizon is often much larger than we imagine.
John 4:35
Psalm 126:5-6
1 Thessalonians 5:18
It is easy to focus exclusively on the challenges facing Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. News reports often highlight conflict, persecution, poverty, environmental concerns, political instability, and social problems. While these realities are important and deserve prayer, they do not tell the entire story.
Across these regions, God is actively transforming lives, raising leaders, planting churches, multiplying disciples, strengthening families, and advancing His Kingdom. Thanksgiving helps us recognize His faithfulness and keeps us from becoming discouraged by the magnitude of the challenges. Hope is not denial of reality. Hope is confidence that God remains at work even when we cannot yet see the full harvest.
Create a thanksgiving list today. Write down at least ten ways you see God working in your life, church, community, nation, or the nations of the world. Spend time thanking Him specifically for His faithfulness.
My Action Step: __________________________
Father, we thank You for Your faithfulness throughout Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East. Thank You for every life transformed, every disciple made, every church planted, every prayer answered, and every act of obedience that advances Your Kingdom. Forgive us for the times we focus only on challenges and fail to recognize Your work.
Open our eyes to see the harvest You are preparing. Strengthen those who labour faithfully in difficult places. Encourage pastors, missionaries, intercessors, disciple-makers, and believers serving throughout these regions. Let hope rise where discouragement has taken root. Let thanksgiving overflow from hearts that recognize Your goodness and Your power.
May Your Kingdom continue advancing across every nation, tribe, language, and people group. We declare that the harvest belongs to You and that Your purposes will stand. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Today I choose thanksgiving over discouragement and hope over despair. I believe God is working throughout the nations, even when I cannot see the full harvest. By faith, I will continue praying, serving, and trusting Him until His Kingdom comes and His will is done on earth as it is in heaven.
