Artificial intelligence can expand access to explanations, ideas, feedback, translation, research support, coding assistance, and creative experimentation. Yet a tool that produces answers quickly can also weaken learning when it replaces curiosity, independent effort, verification, reflection, and personal responsibility. Wisdom lies not in rejecting AI or depending on it blindly, but in using it to strengthen human understanding rather than surrendering the mind God has entrusted to us.
Chidi was a second-year engineering student who had always considered himself intelligent. He understood concepts quickly, participated confidently in class, and often helped his friends prepare for examinations. However, university life had become demanding. Several assignments were due within the same week, he was serving in a student fellowship, and he had recently begun working part-time to support his expenses.
One evening, his lecturer assigned a report on the environmental and economic implications of small-scale solar energy systems in rural communities. Students were expected to examine technical limitations, installation costs, maintenance, local conditions, community adoption, and long-term sustainability.
Chidi opened an artificial-intelligence application and entered the assignment question. Within seconds, the tool produced a structured report containing an introduction, technical analysis, recommendations, and references.
The answer sounded impressive.
Chidi adjusted a few sentences, added his name, changed the headings, and submitted it. The process took less than thirty minutes.
He felt relieved. What might have required several days of reading, note-taking, comparison, and writing had been completed before midnight. He began using the same method for other assignments. Sometimes he asked the tool to simplify the response, make it sound more academic, add examples, or increase the number of references.
His productivity appeared to improve. His submissions were longer, more polished, and better organised.
Yet something was disappearing beneath the quality of the language.
Chidi was no longer wrestling with ideas.
Several weeks later, the lecturer returned the reports and asked selected students to explain their recommendations before the class. When Chidiβs name was called, he stood confidently.
The lecturer pointed to a section of his report proposing a particular financing mechanism and asked why it would be suitable for the communities described.
Chidi repeated part of the paragraph from memory, but the lecturer interrupted gently.
βWhat assumptions are behind that recommendation?β
Chidi hesitated.
The lecturer then asked how the maintenance costs in the report had been calculated and whether one of the cited studies had examined the same geographical context. Chidi could not answer. He had not read the cited papers, checked the figures, or considered whether the recommendations matched the realities of the communities.
When the lecturer searched for one of the references, it could not be found. The title sounded credible, the journal name appeared professional, and the authorsβ names looked realistic, but the source did not exist.
The artificial-intelligence system had generated a confident-looking citation without reliable evidence that it was real.
Chidiβs report was fluent, but he did not understand what he had submitted.
The lecturer did not humiliate him before the class. He asked him to remain afterward.
βYou used a tool to produce this, didnβt you?β she asked.
Chidi admitted that he had.
She replied, βYour greatest problem is not that you used artificial intelligence. Your problem is that you submitted claims you had not examined and represented understanding you did not possess.β
The lecturer, Dr Amina Yusuf, explained that assignments were not given merely to produce documents. They were designed to develop research, reasoning, judgment, communication, problem-solving, and the ability to defend conclusions.
If a student obtained a polished answer without engaging those processes, the document might be complete while the education remained unfinished.
Chidi defended himself by saying that AI was becoming part of every profession. Engineers, doctors, lawyers, accountants, writers, and businesses were using it. He believed learning to use the technology was itself an important skill.
Dr Yusuf agreed.
βUsing AI is a skill,β she said, βbut accepting whatever it produces is not intelligence. A calculator can strengthen mathematical work, but it cannot decide whether you entered the right problem. A navigation system can suggest a route, but you remain responsible for where you are going. Artificial intelligence can assist your thinking, but it must not become a substitute for having a mind of your own.β
She asked Chidi to rewrite the report. This time, he would keep a short record showing how he had used AI, which sources he had verified, what conclusions were his own, and where the toolβs suggestions had been rejected or corrected.
The assignment suddenly became more demanding than it had been before.
It also became an opportunity to learn properly.
Chidi changed his process. Before asking AI for anything, he wrote down what he already understood about the assignment. He identified key terms, questions, assumptions, and areas where his knowledge was weak.
He then searched the university library, reviewed lecture materials, read credible reports, and examined evidence from relevant organisations. He compared the different ways rural energy projects were financed, maintained, and managed.
Only after developing an initial understanding did he return to the AI tool.
Instead of asking it to write the entire report, he used it to generate questions that might expose gaps in his reasoning. The tool suggested that he examine equipment lifespan, technician availability, battery replacement, theft, household affordability, community ownership, payment collection, and the disposal of damaged components.
Some suggestions were useful. Others were too general or unsupported.
Chidi investigated them rather than copying them.
He asked the AI to explain technical concepts in simpler language, then compared the explanation with his textbooks and verified sources. When the system provided statistics, he searched for the original reports. If he could not verify a figure, he did not use it.
The technology became a starting point for inquiry rather than the final authority.
As Chidiβs understanding improved, he noticed weaknesses in several AI-generated recommendations. The tool sometimes assumed stable internet connectivity, easy access to replacement parts, or financing structures that were uncommon in the communities being considered.
Earlier, these confident answers would have impressed him. Now he could recognise when they were detached from local conditions.
He challenged the system by asking what evidence supported a claim, what assumptions might make the recommendation fail, and how the answer would change in a community with limited technical support.
The responses improved, but they still required human judgment.
Chidi discovered that AI became more useful as he became more knowledgeable. A person who knew little could be easily misled by polished language. A person developing genuine understanding could use the tool to compare possibilities, test arguments, identify missing questions, and improve communication.
The quality of the output depended partly on the quality of the userβs thinking.
Chidi had previously treated prompting as a way of commanding the tool to produce what he wanted. Dr Yusuf taught the class that a strong prompt should reflect clear purpose, relevant context, appropriate constraints, and awareness of what the system could not know.
However, she warned them not to confuse prompting skill with subject knowledge. A well-written prompt could still produce a wrong answer. Detailed instructions could increase relevance, but they could not guarantee truth.
Students needed to ask several kinds of questions: What is the assignment actually testing? What evidence is required? Which sources are authoritative? What assumptions are hidden? What information should not be entered into a public tool? What parts of the work must demonstrate the studentβs independent competence?
These questions came before the prompt.
AI literacy was not merely knowing how to obtain a response. It included knowing when not to ask, what not to upload, how to test the answer, and when qualified human guidance was necessary.
During another course, Chidi joined a student team working with a local business. The company shared sales information and operational challenges so the students could propose improvements.
One team member suggested uploading the entire document into an AI system to obtain a quick analysis. Chidi was about to agree when he remembered Dr Yusufβs warning about privacy and confidentiality.
The information included customer details, internal pricing, staff records, and business data that the students had received for a limited academic purpose. They did not have permission to submit it to an external system.
The team stopped and consulted their supervisor. They created an anonymised dataset containing only information approved for analysis, removed identifying details, and used university-authorised tools where appropriate.
Chidi understood that convenience did not cancel consent, confidentiality, intellectual property, or data protection. A useful tool could still be used irresponsibly.
Responsible AI use required asking not only, βCan this tool process the information?β but also, βDo I have the right to give it this information?β
Chidi did not become anti-technology. He began using AI more frequently, but with clearer purposes.
When he struggled with a mathematical concept, he first attempted the problem himself, then asked the tool to explain where his reasoning had gone wrong. He requested alternative examples and compared the methods with his course materials.
When learning programming, he used AI to interpret error messages, suggest tests, and explain unfamiliar code. He refused to submit code he could not describe. If the system generated a solution, he worked through each part, tested edge cases, and rewrote sections where necessary.
For presentations, he used the tool to simulate difficult questions an examiner might ask. In group study, he generated quizzes and case studies, but the students verified the answers before using them.
He also used AI to improve grammar and structure after writing his own first draft. He reviewed every change to ensure that the final work still expressed his intended meaning and did not introduce false claims.
The tool saved time, widened access, and supported practice.
It no longer replaced the work his mind needed to perform.
Some classmates continued generating complete assignments and submitting them with minimal revision. They teased Chidi for spending hours verifying sources when the tool could produce an answer instantly.
For a while, their grades remained acceptable. The weakness became visible during practical work, interviews, oral examinations, and group projects. Some students could not explain concepts contained in their own submissions. Others depended on AI even for simple decisions and became anxious whenever the tool was unavailable.
They had increased output without building capacity.
Chidi realised that speed could hide intellectual debt. Every time he avoided learning something essential, he carried the weakness into the next task. Eventually, the accumulated gaps would appear in professional work where errors could affect buildings, finances, systems, organisations, and human lives.
Education was not only about passing the current assignment. It was preparation for responsibilities that might one day have serious consequences.
Dr Yusuf invited the students to develop a responsible-use guide for their course. She did not impose a complete ban because AI was already affecting the profession they were entering. Instead, the class discussed which uses supported learning and which uses misrepresented competence.
They agreed that AI could assist with brainstorming, explanations, practice questions, language improvement, coding feedback, comparison of structures, and preliminary exploration, provided the work remained within course rules.
Students were expected to verify factual claims, use genuine sources, protect confidential information, disclose significant AI assistance when required, and remain able to explain and defend everything submitted in their names.
Certain assessments prohibited AI because the purpose was to measure independent competence under controlled conditions. Other assignments permitted it but required documentation.
The rules were not identical for every task. They depended on the learning objective.
This distinction helped the students understand that responsible AI use was not a single universal formula. Context, institutional policy, professional standards, and the purpose of the work all mattered.
Chidiβs revised solar-energy report contained fewer dramatic claims than the first version. He removed unverifiable statistics, acknowledged limitations, and distinguished evidence from assumptions.
He proposed a pilot rather than presenting one financing model as a guaranteed solution. The report recommended that communities participate in ownership decisions, that maintenance capability be assessed before installation, and that long-term costs be explained clearly rather than hidden behind the initial purchase price.
Chidi included a short statement describing how AI had been used to generate questions, clarify selected concepts, and review the structure of the draft. He also stated that sources had been checked independently and that the final analysis and recommendations were his responsibility.
When Dr Yusuf asked him to defend the report, he could explain every section. He could also identify areas where his conclusion might change if new evidence emerged.
The report was no longer merely impressive.
It belonged to him.
Chidi later formed a small study group called Mind Before Machine. The name was not intended to reject AI but to establish the order of responsibility.
Members followed a simple process: attempt the task, identify the gap, use the tool intentionally, verify the response, apply the learning, and explain the result without assistance.
They compared inaccurate AI outputs, discussed fabricated references, examined bias, and practised turning broad questions into stronger research problems. They also shared free tools and learning resources with students who could not afford premium subscriptions.
The group recognised that AI access could itself become unequal. Students with better devices, paid accounts, faster internet, and stronger digital literacy could gain advantages. The answer was not to deny the technology to everyone but to expand responsible access, teach critical use, and ensure that assessment systems did not reward hidden privilege.
Chidi had once used AI to avoid learning. He was now using it to help others learn more effectively.
Chidi did not lack access to information. He lacked a disciplined process for converting information into understanding.
Artificial intelligence can generate fluent responses, but fluency is not proof of truth. It may produce outdated information, inaccurate claims, fabricated references, biased assumptions, weak reasoning, insecure code, or advice detached from local conditions.
The user remains responsible for what is accepted, submitted, published, built, recommended, or acted upon.
Rejecting AI entirely may also create unnecessary limitations. The technology can support people who need translation, alternative explanations, writing assistance, accessibility, practice, rapid prototyping, and new forms of creative or professional work.
The central question is not whether AI is good or bad. It is whether the user remains truthful, competent, thoughtful, accountable, and capable of acting when the tool is absent.
Understand what the task is designed to develop or measure. Identify what you already know, what you need to learn, and which parts must demonstrate independent competence.
Check facts, calculations, quotations, code, references, and assumptions against credible sources, course materials, experiments, or qualified professionals. Confidence of language is not evidence of accuracy.
Do not upload confidential, personal, copyrighted, restricted, or organisational information without appropriate permission. Follow institutional rules and disclose significant AI use where required.
Remain able to explain, defend, adapt, and apply everything submitted in your name. Use AI to support your thinking, not to impersonate knowledge you do not possess.
Responsible AI creates opportunities in education, research, coding, translation, accessibility, design, data analysis, business operations, communication, agriculture, healthcare administration, public service, publishing, and creative production. The greatest value will often come from people who combine subject expertise with the ability to use AI critically and ethically.
Students and professionals should develop foundational knowledge, prompt design, source verification, data literacy, privacy awareness, bias detection, cybersecurity, documentation, and clear communication. They should also know when a task requires licensed, regulated, or professionally qualified human judgment.
AI can accelerate work, but acceleration increases the importance of direction. Producing more mistakes faster is not progress.
Choose one learning task and make an independent first attempt before opening an AI tool. Record what you understand and where you are genuinely stuck.
Write down whether you need explanation, feedback, practice, comparison, translation, research support, coding help, or idea generation. Do not begin with a vague demand for the complete answer.
Select three facts, references, calculations, or recommendations produced by AI and confirm them through credible independent sources.
Review what you normally upload. Remove personal, confidential, copyrighted, or organisational data unless you have clear permission and an approved system.
Close the application and explain the concept, solution, argument, or code in your own words. Any part you cannot explain requires further learning.
Keep a brief record of what the tool contributed, what you changed, what you rejected, and what you verified. Follow the disclosure rules of your institution or profession.
Show someone how to use AI for questioning, practice, feedback, or explanation without submitting unverified work or surrendering independent thought.
God instructed human beings to love Him with heart, soul, strength, and mind. The mind is not an inconvenience to be bypassed; it is part of our stewardship.
Daniel and his companions received knowledge and understanding, yet they also exercised judgment, discipline, courage, and faithfulness. Their wisdom was not merely the possession of information but the ability to understand and act responsibly.
The Bereans were commended because they received teaching with openness and examined the Scriptures to determine whether what they heard was true. They combined receptivity with verification.
Technology can extend human capability, but it should remain under truth, love, justice, humility, and accountability. No machine can bear our moral responsibility before God and other people.
Within the next seven days, complete one assignment or professional task using the MIND framework. Begin independently, use AI for a clearly defined purpose, verify the output, protect sensitive information, document the assistance received, and explain the final work without reopening the tool.
Do not surrender your mind for the convenience of receiving an answer.

Helping a student or professional use artificial intelligence without surrendering personal understanding is an important act of Kingdom multiplication.
