
Education, Technical Skills and the Circular Economy β’ Story 7 β’ 8 min read
A young personβs unusual curiosity may be the beginning of a valuable skill, profession, business, ministry, or solution. Wise parents, teachers, leaders, and communities do not merely stop risky behaviour; they identify the ability beneath it, provide structure, connect it to responsible mentorship, and create a pathway through which curiosity can become competence and service.
From the time David was eleven, broken things seemed to find him. Old radios, damaged fans, abandoned chargers, cracked extension boxes, faulty torches, discarded speakers, and mobile phones that would no longer switch on gradually accumulated beneath the table in his room. Some belonged to neighbours who had already replaced them. Others came from rubbish piles, repair shops, or relatives who assumed they had no remaining value.
David did not collect the devices because he expected to sell them. He wanted to understand what was inside them and why they had stopped working. He removed screws carefully, arranged components on pieces of cardboard, traced wires, examined circuit boards, and compared one damaged device with another. Sometimes he succeeded in making a torch light again or restoring sound to a small radio. More often, he created a collection of parts that nobody else could identify.
His mother, Ruth, found the habit frustrating. She worried about electrical shocks, fire, sharp metal, leaking batteries, and the growing disorder in his room. When a neighbourβs extension socket failed after David attempted to repair it, her concerns increased. She confiscated his tools and instructed him to stop bringing broken equipment into the house.
βFace your schoolwork,β she told him. βYou are not a repairer.β
David obeyed for a while, but the curiosity did not disappear. He watched online repair videos when he had access to data, asked technicians questions when passing their shops, and continued studying damaged devices whenever an opportunity arose. His school results were average, and because he struggled to remain interested in lessons presented only through notes and memorisation, several adults concluded that he was unserious.
What they did not see was how long he could concentrate when solving a practical problem. He could spend hours tracing why a wire no longer carried power, comparing components, or testing different explanations. The same boy who appeared distracted in class became patient, observant, and persistent when working with his hands.
The ability was present, but it had no structure.
One Saturday afternoon, the standing fan in the family sitting room stopped working. Ruth planned to replace it because two repairers had previously collected money without solving the problem. While she was discussing the cost with a neighbour, David asked whether he could examine it.
Her first response was no. The fan used mains electricity, and she remembered the damaged extension socket. David then said something she did not expect: βI will not connect it to power. I only want to see whether the wire or switch is loose.β
Ruth noticed that his approach had changed. He was no longer rushing to prove himself. He had begun thinking about safety.
She agreed on the condition that an adult technician would inspect anything he touched before the fan was connected again. David unplugged it, opened the control section, photographed the wire positions, and found a visibly damaged connection. He did not attempt to complete the repair. Instead, he showed it to Mr Emmanuel, an electrical technician who lived nearby.
Mr Emmanuel inspected the fan, confirmed Davidβs observation, and repaired the connection properly. He then asked how David had located the fault.
The boy explained his process with unusual clarity.
Mr Emmanuel turned to Ruth and said, βYour son should not be experimenting with electricity alone, but this interest should not be destroyed. He needs training.β
That statement changed the conversation. Until then, Ruth had seen only danger and disorder. Mr Emmanuel saw curiosity that required discipline, safety, and mentorship.
He offered to allow David to visit his workshop for a few hours on Saturdays, provided that he followed instructions, wore appropriate protection, and did not handle live equipment without supervision.
David arrived at the workshop expecting to begin fixing devices immediately. Instead, Mr Emmanuel spent the first sessions teaching him how not to get injured. They discussed electrical isolation, battery hazards, capacitors, damaged cables, fire risks, ventilation, protective equipment, safe tools, and the difference between low-voltage electronics and equipment connected to mains electricity.
He learned that curiosity without knowledge could endanger him and others. He also learned that repairing something badly could cause more harm than leaving it broken.
Mr Emmanuel made him practise identifying tools, organising components, reading labels, cleaning work surfaces, and documenting what had been dismantled. David was disappointed by the slow beginning, but his mentor explained that a professional technician is not recognised merely by the ability to open equipment. Competence includes diagnosis, safety, documentation, honesty, quality control, communication, and knowing when a task exceeds oneβs training.
David began with low-risk devices such as battery-powered torches, small radios, toys, and chargers that were tested under supervision. He learned to distinguish between a damaged cable, failed connection, weak battery, broken switch, and component-level fault. He also learned that not every device should be repaired. Some were unsafe, counterfeit, severely damaged, or more expensive to restore than replace.
The workshop taught him another lesson: what people called βrubbishβ often contained usable parts. Screws, switches, housings, connectors, speakers, motors, and cables could sometimes be recovered responsibly. Other materials required safe disposal because burning or dumping them carelessly could release harmful substances.
Broken electronics were not simply a technical problem. They were also a health, environmental, and economic problem.
After several months, a neighbour brought a rechargeable lamp that no longer held power. David examined it under Mr Emmanuelβs supervision and discovered that the battery had reached the end of its useful life. He explained the fault, provided the replacement cost, and made it clear that the new battery was not included in his service charge.
The neighbour agreed. David replaced the battery correctly, tested the lamp, cleaned it, and returned it with simple instructions on charging and safe use.
The payment was small, but it mattered because it was connected to a complete service. David had not merely touched a device. He had identified a problem, communicated with the owner, estimated the cost, obtained permission, completed the work, tested the result, and explained proper use.
He recorded the repair in a notebook: the device, reported problem, diagnosis, replacement part, cost, time spent, and outcome. Over time, that notebook became evidence of his learning.
Davidβs mother began seeing the interest differently. The workshop had not distracted him from responsibility; it had given him a reason to take learning more seriously. Mathematics became useful for measurement and calculation. Science helped him understand current, resistance, materials, and energy. English helped him read manuals and explain faults. Digital literacy helped him research models and document repairs.
Education stopped feeling like an unrelated set of subjects. It became a collection of tools for understanding real problems.
At school, David was still not the highest-scoring student. He sometimes struggled with long written explanations and examinations that rewarded memorisation. Yet during a science exhibition, he and two classmates built a simple rechargeable reading light from responsibly recovered components. Mr Emmanuel supervised the electrical work, while a science teacher helped them present the project safely.
The project attracted attention because many students lived in homes where unreliable power affected evening study. David explained how damaged devices could sometimes be repaired, how reusable components might be recovered, and why batteries should not be thrown into ordinary waste or burned.
A teacher who had previously described him as distracted saw a different student. David was able to answer detailed questions, explain limitations, and admit what he did not know. He was not careless; he had become disciplined.
The school later introduced a small technical club where students could learn basic tool use, repair awareness, design, coding, maintenance, and responsible electronic-waste handling. The club did not encourage children to open dangerous appliances at home. It created supervised exposure and connected interested students with vetted professionals.
Davidβs curiosity helped reveal a broader educational gap. Some students learn best when ideas are connected to practical activity, but many schools offer limited access to workshops, laboratories, apprenticeships, tools, or skilled mentors. As a result, young people with technical, creative, agricultural, mechanical, or entrepreneurial abilities may be labelled weak simply because only one form of intelligence is being measured.
As David gained experience, he noticed how many damaged electronics were discarded within the community. People threw away phones because of broken charging ports, replaced fans because of loose connections, and abandoned solar lamps because nobody nearby could obtain suitable batteries. Some devices were repairable. Others contained reusable parts. Many were simply dumped with household waste.
With support from Mr Emmanuel, the school, and a local environmental group, David helped organise a small electronic-repair and collection day. Residents brought damaged low-risk devices for assessment. Qualified technicians handled repairs, while students observed, recorded common faults, learned about maintenance, and separated items that required specialist recycling.
The event revealed several opportunities. Families saved money by repairing equipment that still had useful life. Young people gained exposure to technical careers. Technicians met potential apprentices and customers. The community became more aware of environmental hazards. Reusable devices were restored and donated to people who needed them.
David had begun by opening broken radios out of curiosity. He was now participating in a wider system involving repair, education, environmental stewardship, youth development, and community service.
His path was not guaranteed to become easy. He still required formal education, certifications, tools, discipline, and wider experience. Technology would continue to change, and some repairs would require specialised equipment beyond his reach. Yet he was no longer merely the boy who collected rubbish. He had begun building competence from what others overlooked.
The community thought it was throwing away broken devices, but it was also at risk of throwing away curiosity, practical intelligence, repair knowledge, materials, environmental responsibility, and the potential of a young person whose abilities had not yet found a pathway.
Many valuable interests first appear inconvenient. A child who constantly asks questions may become a researcher. One who enjoys arranging events may develop operational ability. A young person who draws on every available surface may become a designer, architect, animator, or visual communicator. Someone who spends hours editing videos may need guidance toward storytelling, media production, or responsible digital creation. A child who enjoys negotiating prices may possess early commercial instincts that require integrity and financial education.
Not every interest will become a profession, and not every hobby should be commercialised. Some interests will change as a child matures. The responsibility of adults is not to predict the entire future but to observe carefully, protect the child from harm, provide exposure, establish discipline, and connect curiosity to learning.
The alternative is dangerous in two directions. Unsupervised experimentation can produce injury, waste, illegality, or destructive habits. Excessive restriction can suppress ability, confidence, and initiative. Wise access provides both opportunity and boundaries.
Observe what repeatedly captures the young personβs attention, what problems they enjoy solving, how they use free time, and where unusual persistence appears. Do not confuse poor structure with lack of potential.
Define what the learner may handle, where the activity can occur, which tools require supervision, and what risks must be avoided. Curiosity should never become an excuse for unsafe electrical work, data theft, environmental harm, or experimentation beyond competence.
Connect the learner with a trustworthy technician, artisan, teacher, engineer, creative professional, farmer, entrepreneur, or skilled practitioner. Exposure helps transform imagination into informed understanding.
Create supervised projects that connect theory to service. Begin with manageable tasks, document the process, obtain feedback, and allow competence to grow gradually.
Encourage courses, apprenticeships, certifications, technical reading, portfolios, competitions, and practical experience. Interest becomes more valuable when supported by standards and demonstrated work.
Use part of the knowledge, income, tools, or opportunity gained to help another learner. Repair skills can become employment, environmental stewardship, community service, entrepreneurship, and a pathway through which others are trained.
Technical curiosity can develop into electrical installation, electronics repair, renewable-energy maintenance, telecommunications, automotive diagnostics, refrigeration, appliance servicing, industrial maintenance, computer hardware, networking, robotics, fabrication, coding, product design, assistive technology, recycling, quality control, or technical education. The circular economy also creates opportunities in collection, refurbishment, spare parts, resale, maintenance subscriptions, waste sorting, materials recovery, environmental compliance, and public education.
These pathways require different levels of training and regulation. Electrical, medical, automotive, and industrial systems can cause serious harm when handled by unqualified people. Access Ministry does not encourage careless experimentation or the imitation of online instructions without supervision. The purpose is to help people move from curiosity to competent, ethical, and safe practice.
Notice what repeatedly captures the personβs attention, what activities produce sustained concentration, and what kinds of problems they attempt to solve without being forced.
Identify what is valuable in the interest and what requires restriction. Stop unsafe behaviour without destroying the curiosity beneath it.
Look for a competent and responsible practitioner who understands both the skill and the importance of safeguarding young people. Verify the personβs character and working environment before creating access.
Choose a low-risk task that can be completed safely, documented, reviewed, and explained. The purpose is learning, not proving that the beginner already knows everything.
Show how mathematics, science, language, technology, design, business, and communication support the practical interest. Education becomes more meaningful when learners understand its application.
Keep photographs, notes, repair records, designs, project reports, certificates, feedback, and lessons learned. A portfolio makes development visible.
Identify approved collection, repair, donation, refurbishment, or recycling pathways for broken electronics and other hazardous materials. Never burn batteries, cables, circuit boards, or electrical components.
When Samuel first heard Godβs voice, he did not yet understand what was happening. Eli eventually recognised that the boyβs experience required guidance and taught him how to respond. The calling was from God, but mature support helped Samuel recognise and steward it.
Jesus also saw potential in people others underestimated. He called fishermen, tax collectors, political outsiders, and ordinary men whose present occupations did not reveal the full scope of what they would become. He did not leave them untrained; He brought them close, taught them, corrected them, gave them responsibilities, reviewed their experiences, and eventually sent them to serve others.
In Exodus, Bezalel and Oholiab were entrusted with practical craftsmanship, design, construction, and teaching. Scripture does not treat skill with the hands as spiritually inferior. Wisdom may appear in administration, creativity, engineering, agriculture, caregiving, trade, design, repair, and countless forms of useful work.
A discarded object may still contain value, and a misunderstood child may carry an ability that has not yet been named. Kingdom stewardship teaches us to look again.
Within the next seven days, identify one young person whose curiosity or practical interest is being overlooked, speak with them about what they enjoy doing, separate the potential from the risks, and connect them to one safe learning opportunity, mentor, workshop, project, course, or community.
Do not merely tell the person to stop.
Help them discover how to begin responsibly.

Helping a young person discover, develop, and responsibly apply an overlooked interest is an important act of Kingdom multiplication.
