Learning to See

🌍 DAY 7 — The Mountain Guide

Lukas almost turned back—not because of the weather or the mountain, but because of one person.

The group had been climbing for nearly five hours through the Swiss Alps when he noticed Anna beginning to fall behind. Earlier that morning, the hikers had left the village full of excitement. Cameras clicked constantly, conversations flowed easily, and everyone talked about the summit waiting above the clouds. Now the atmosphere had changed. The air was thinner, the trail steeper, and each step required more effort than the last.

Anna was sixty-eight years old and considerably older than most members of the group. Several climbers had quietly questioned whether she should attempt such a demanding ascent. Yet she had trained for months and insisted she was ready. What they did not know was why she had come.

The previous evening, while the group shared dinner at the lodge, Anna had told Lukas about her husband. Twenty years earlier, they had planned to climb the same mountain together. They had saved money, studied maps, and dreamed about the journey for years. Then, only months before the trip, her husband died unexpectedly. The tickets were never used. The dream remained unfinished.

As the climb continued, Lukas remembered the photograph she had shown him the night before—a younger version of the two of them standing beside a map of the Alps, smiling at a future they believed would arrive together.

Now, as he watched her struggle against the steep incline, he understood that this climb meant far more to her than reaching a summit. It was the completion of a promise.

Ahead of them, the rest of the group continued climbing. Some occasionally looked back and waved encouragement. Others focused entirely on the trail ahead. No one was being selfish; they were simply pursuing the goal they had come for.

The summit.

But Lukas knew something many climbers eventually learn. Reaching the top is only one part of the journey. How you reach it—and who reaches it with you—matters just as much.

When Anna stumbled for the third time, he made a decision. He handed part of his equipment to another guide and slowed his pace to match hers. The gap between them and the others widened almost immediately.

“You don’t have to do this,” Anna said between breaths.

Lukas smiled.

“Neither do you.”

For a moment she laughed.

Then they continued.

The next two hours were slow. There were frequent stops, careful steps, and moments when Anna wondered aloud if she should turn back. Each time, Lukas listened patiently before encouraging her forward. He never pushed. He never pressured. He simply stayed beside her.

As the afternoon wore on, clouds drifted across the peaks and shadows stretched across the valley below. The summit that had seemed so close earlier in the day now felt impossibly distant.

Yet step by step, they moved forward.

When they finally reached the top, most of the group had already arrived. Some were taking photographs. Others sat quietly enjoying the view. No one paid much attention as Anna took the final few steps onto the summit.

For several minutes she said nothing.

She simply stood there.

The wind moved gently across the mountain ridge as she stared at the horizon. Snow-covered peaks stretched endlessly into the distance. Slowly, she reached into her jacket pocket and removed the worn photograph she had shown Lukas the night before.

Holding it in both hands, she looked at the image and whispered, “We made it.”

Tears filled her eyes.

Not because she had conquered a mountain.

Because she had fulfilled a promise.

As the group began preparing for the descent, Anna turned toward Lukas.

“Thank you,” she said quietly.

“For what?”

“For not leaving me behind.”

Years later, Lukas would struggle to remember many details about that particular climb. He guided hundreds of people up mountains throughout his career. Names faded. Dates blurred together. Even the weather became difficult to recall.

But he never forgot Anna.

Not because she reached the summit.

Because she almost didn’t.

That evening, after the group returned safely to the lodge, Lukas sat alone on a wooden bench overlooking the valley. The mountain that had dominated everyone’s attention all day was now hidden in darkness. The summit could no longer be seen.

Yet he found himself thinking about something far more important.

Most people spend their lives focused on destinations. They chase goals, achievements, promotions, milestones, and dreams. There is nothing wrong with any of those things. But somewhere along the way, many forget to notice the people struggling beside them.

The summit had been important.

Helping someone reach it had mattered more.

And perhaps God is asking the same question today:

Who have you been moving too quickly to notice?

🙏 PRAYER

Personal

Father, help me slow down enough to see the people around me. Give me a heart that notices those who are struggling and the courage to walk beside them. Teach me to value people more than achievements and relationships more than recognition.

Family

Pray for your family members. Ask God to strengthen your relationships and help you become a source of encouragement and support to one another.

Community

Pray for those in your community who may be carrying burdens silently. Ask God to surround them with people who will walk beside them and help them move forward.

Nation of the Day — Switzerland 🇨🇭

Pray for spiritual awakening throughout Switzerland. Ask God to raise disciple-makers, strengthen churches, and reveal His love to people searching for purpose and hope.

Unreached Peoples

Pray that those who have never heard the Gospel will encounter Jesus and that God will send workers into His harvest fields.

Today I choose people over pace.

I will not become so focused on my goals that I overlook those around me.

I will encourage the discouraged.

I will strengthen the weary.

I will walk with those who need support.

I will lead through service.

I will love intentionally.

I will follow the example of Christ.

I will see like an eagle.

I will lead like a lion.

I will serve like Christ.
