The altar stood behind the hardware shop, hidden by a curtain the colour of dark red wine.
Every morning before opening the metal shutters, Rafael Guzmán stepped into the narrow room, lit a candle, opened his Bible, and prayed. On the wall hung a wooden cross, several family photographs, a framed Scripture, and a faded picture of his mother holding him outside the village church where he had been baptised.
The smell of candle wax mixed with cement dust, machine oil, rope, paint thinner, and the salt air that drifted inland from the coast.
Rafael’s shop had begun as a small wooden stall selling nails, padlocks, buckets, and roofing sheets. Over twenty years, it had grown into one of the busiest hardware businesses in the district. Builders, electricians, farmers, mechanics, and householders arrived from early morning until closing time.
People considered Rafael religious. He contributed to church repairs, paid for food during community celebrations, and often reminded customers that everything he possessed had come from God.
Yet those who worked closest to him knew another side.
He delayed wages whenever cash flow was tight, although his own household expenses were always paid first. He shouted at employees in front of customers, recorded debts inconsistently, and expected workers to remain after closing without additional pay.
His younger brother, Esteban, had not entered the shop for six years. Their disagreement began after their father’s death when property boundaries and inheritance were divided. Each brother accused the other of dishonesty. Church elders had attempted reconciliation, but Rafael refused to reopen the discussion.
“God knows my heart,” he would say.
Behind the curtain, he prayed for blessing. In front of it, he avoided obedience.
One of the shop’s employees was a quiet young man named Josué, who had migrated from Haiti with relatives several years earlier. He spoke Spanish well, understood construction materials, and could often identify what a customer needed before Rafael did.
Josué’s employment arrangement had never been written down. Rafael paid him less than some newer workers and occasionally withheld part of his wages, claiming that documentation difficulties made everything complicated.
When Josué asked for a clear record of what he was owed, Rafael became irritated.
“You should be grateful you have work,” he said. “Many people would take your place.”
That evening, Rafael entered the altar room and prayed for protection over the business. He asked God to increase sales, keep thieves away, and bless the work of his hands.
As he left, he passed Josué, who was still carrying bags of cement into storage.
“Finish before you go,” Rafael said.
The following week, Rafael invited several men from church to begin a Discovery Bible Study in the shop after closing. He imagined the altar room would create the right atmosphere, but it was too small, so they arranged plastic chairs among stacked paint cans and coils of electrical cable.
Their first passage was Acts 7:37–53.
Stephen continued his defence before the council by recounting Israel’s history. Moses had received living words from God, yet the people refused to obey him. Their hearts turned back towards Egypt, and they made a golden calf.
Later, Israel carried the tabernacle through the wilderness, and Solomon built the temple. Yet Stephen reminded his hearers that the Most High does not dwell in temples made by human hands.
The group became quiet when they reached Stephen’s accusation:
“Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost.”
One man asked, “How could people carry the tabernacle, preserve the Law, honour the temple, and still resist God?”
The facilitator, a teacher named Daniela, replied, “Because it is possible to protect religious things while refusing the God those things point towards.”
Rafael shifted in his chair.
Daniela continued. “The golden calf was not only a statue. It represented worship shaped around what people wanted rather than what God commanded. We may not build calves from gold, but we can still create a religion that blesses our decisions without changing them.”
The words followed Rafael into the altar room.
He looked at the candle, the cross, the family Bible, and his mother’s photograph. None of those things was wrong. They reminded him of faith, sacrifice, and family history.
Yet he began to wonder whether the room had become a shelter from repentance. He came there to feel close to God without allowing God to question the way he treated people outside the curtain.
The following evening, the group studied Leviticus 24. They read about the lamps that were to burn continually before the Lord and the bread placed regularly in His presence. They also read the difficult account of the man who blasphemed God’s name and the command that justice should apply equally:
“Ye shall have one manner of law, as well for the stranger, as for one of your own country.”
Daniela asked, “What does it mean to keep a lamp burning before God while treating a stranger unjustly?”
No one answered immediately.
Josué was working nearby and could hear the discussion through the thin wall. He had not been invited to the DBS because Rafael assumed he would not be interested.
After the meeting, Josué approached him.
“Señor Rafael, may I ask something?”
Rafael expected another question about wages.
“Yes.”
“Does the Bible really say that the law should be the same for the stranger?”
Rafael hesitated. “Yes.”
“Then why is my work recorded differently from everyone else’s?”
The shop seemed unusually quiet. The final customer had left, and the metal shutters were partly lowered. From behind the curtain, the candle still burned.
Rafael felt the familiar desire to explain, defend, and redirect the conversation towards paperwork, immigration, cash shortages, and gratitude. Some of those issues were real, but none fully answered Josué’s question.
“Let me examine the records,” he said.
Josué nodded. “You have said that before.”
The sentence cut more deeply than an accusation.
That night, Rafael remained in the altar room long after everyone had gone. He read Psalm 114:
“The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back. The mountains skipped like rams.”
God’s presence had moved seas, rivers, mountains, and rocks. Yet Rafael had reduced that presence to a candle behind a curtain.
He began to pray, but the usual words would not come. Instead, he opened the wage book.
Several pages were incomplete. Some deductions had no explanation. Josué was owed far more than Rafael had admitted to himself.
Rafael realised that the altar had become the place where he asked God to bless what he had already decided not to surrender.
The next morning, Rafael did not open the shop at the usual time. He asked the employees to gather inside.
He began awkwardly.
“Our records have not been handled properly. Some of you have worked hours that were not recorded, and some wages have been delayed without clear explanation.”
The employees exchanged glances. Rafael rarely admitted mistakes publicly.
He continued, “I have spoken about God while failing to treat some of you justly. I am asking forgiveness, but I also know that words are not repayment.”
He engaged an accountant to reconstruct the wage records. Employees were invited to review their hours, payments, advances, and deductions. Where records were uncertain, the business would not automatically assume the worker was wrong.
Rafael discovered that the total amount owed would place significant pressure on the business. He sold a vehicle he rarely used, reduced household spending, and arranged a repayment schedule that employees could verify.
When he met privately with Josué, Rafael placed the corrected statement between them.
“This is what the business owes you,” he said.
Josué studied the page. “And my job?”
“You will not lose your job for asking for justice.”
Rafael also offered to formalise the employment arrangement and obtain qualified advice on the documentation process.
Josué accepted the repayment plan but did not immediately trust the change.
“I am thankful,” he said, “but trust may take longer than money.”
Rafael nodded. “I understand.”
The transformation of the shop did not happen in one emotional morning. Rafael still became impatient. Some customers complained when new procedures slowed service. A few employees attempted to claim hours they had not worked, and the business had to establish fair processes for resolving disputes.
Justice required more than generosity. It required accurate records, consistent policies, accountability, and equal treatment.
The DBS group also changed. Daniela asked why Josué and the other employees had not been included from the beginning.
Rafael admitted, “I wanted a Bible study for the people I considered spiritually ready. I did not think about the people already standing beside us.”
The group moved from the altar room to the main shop floor. Participation remained voluntary, but every employee and neighbouring trader was invited. Some attended; others did not. No one’s wages, schedule, or standing depended upon participation.
The red curtain remained, but it was usually kept open.
Rafael’s greater struggle concerned Esteban.
Correcting wages was difficult, but it involved numbers. Reconciliation with his brother required reopening grief, pride, and disputed memories.
During one DBS meeting, Stephen’s words returned:
“Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted?”
Daniela explained that Stephen was confronting people who honoured dead prophets while resisting the truth those prophets had proclaimed. They celebrated religious history but rejected present correction.
Rafael realised that he often praised his mother’s faith while ignoring one of her final requests: that her sons reconcile.
He contacted Esteban.
His brother did not answer.
Rafael tried again two weeks later. This time, Esteban sent a message:
“I do not want another meeting where you explain why everything was my fault.”
Rafael replied:
“Then I will begin by listening.”
They met in a public café with a trusted mediator. The first conversation was painful. Both men had distorted parts of the story. Rafael had withheld information about one property sale, while Esteban had removed equipment from their father’s workshop without agreement.
Neither brother was innocent, and neither had been completely truthful.
The mediator helped them separate facts from assumptions. Documents were reviewed, financial values reassessed, and an agreement developed. Some losses could not be reversed, but responsibility could be acknowledged.
At the end of the third meeting, Esteban asked about the altar behind the shop.
“Do you still pray there every morning?”
“Yes,” Rafael replied.
“Did God tell you to call me?”
Rafael considered the question. “God had been telling me for years. I finally stopped using prayer to avoid listening.”
Esteban did not immediately return to close friendship, but the brothers began speaking again. Reconciliation became a process rather than a performance.
Months later, Rafael replaced the old sign outside the altar room. Previously it had read:
“God Bless This Business.”
The new sign said:
The altar remained a place of prayer, but it was no longer treated as the holiest part of the shop. The wage records, customer agreements, employee conversations, business decisions, and reconciliation meetings also became places of worship.
One afternoon, Josué led the DBS. He read Psalm 114 and asked why creation trembled before the presence of the Lord.
A young employee answered, “Because when God is truly present, things cannot remain where they were.”
Josué looked towards Rafael.
“The sea moved,” he said. “The river moved. The mountains moved. Even the rock released water. So if we keep saying God is present but nothing in us can be corrected, perhaps we are only protecting the appearance of worship.”
No one spoke for several seconds.
Then Rafael quietly said, “That is the lesson of the altar behind the shop.”
Acts 7:37–53 continues Stephen’s retelling of Israel’s history. Moses received living words from God, but the people refused to obey him. Although they had been delivered from Egypt, their hearts turned back towards it.
They asked Aaron to make gods who would lead them, and they rejoiced in the work of their own hands. The golden calf gave them a visible form of worship they could control.
Idolatry is not limited to bowing before carved images. It occurs whenever people replace the living God with something more manageable: success, tradition, religious reputation, political loyalty, wealth, comfort, family honour, or a version of faith that never requires surrender.
Stephen then speaks about the tabernacle and the temple. Both had legitimate places in Israel’s story, but neither could contain God.
“Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands.”
The problem was not that the temple was evil. The problem was believing that possession of a sacred structure guaranteed faithfulness while hearts remained resistant.
Stephen’s audience honoured the Law, the temple, Moses, and the prophets, yet they resisted the Holy Spirit and rejected the Righteous One to whom those witnesses pointed.
Religious tradition becomes dangerous when it allows people to feel close to God while remaining far from obedience. A person may attend worship, own several Bibles, maintain an altar, support ministry, observe religious festivals, and speak spiritual language while refusing repentance, justice, forgiveness, sexual integrity, financial honesty, or compassion.
The solution is not to despise tradition. Healthy traditions can preserve truth, strengthen identity, organise worship, and connect generations. The question is whether tradition continues directing people towards living obedience.
Leviticus 24 describes lamps burning continually before the Lord and bread placed regularly in His presence. Worship required careful, faithful attention. God’s name was to be honoured rather than treated carelessly.
The chapter also declares that the same standard of justice applied to both the native-born person and the stranger. Worship and justice belonged together.
A lamp burning in the sanctuary could not compensate for injustice in the community. Likewise, prayer meetings, religious symbols, charitable donations, and spiritual language cannot excuse unequal treatment of workers, migrants, customers, family members, or strangers.
The difficult legal penalties in Leviticus belong to ancient Israel’s covenant and civil order. Christians are not authorised to reproduce those penalties. The enduring principles concern reverence for God’s name, responsibility for harm, proportionate justice, and equal treatment.
Psalm 114 remembers Israel’s departure from Egypt. The sea fled, the Jordan turned back, mountains skipped, and the rock became a pool of water.
Creation responded to the presence of the Lord.
The psalm challenges static religion. When God’s presence is genuinely welcomed, hardened hearts can soften, unjust systems can change, hidden truth can emerge, broken relationships can move towards reconciliation, and tightly held possessions can be released for righteous purposes.
God’s presence does not merely create an atmosphere. It produces movement.
Together, Acts 7, Leviticus 24, and Psalm 114 reveal that worship must lead to obedience. God cannot be confined to buildings, altars, rituals, traditions, or inherited identity. He confronts idols, demands justice, calls for holiness, and moves His people towards repentance.
A disciple should therefore ask:
What religious activity am I using to avoid obedience? What injustice remains outside my prayer room? Which relationship needs reconciliation? Which financial practice needs correction? Which tradition still produces life, and which one merely protects appearances?
An altar is valuable only when something is truly surrendered upon it.

Acts 7:37–53 reveals a people who possessed sacred history but repeatedly resisted God. They remembered Moses while behaving like those who rejected him, honoured the prophets while rejecting their message, and valued the temple while resisting the Holy Spirit.
Stephen’s message warns that religious knowledge can coexist with disobedience. Familiarity with Scripture does not automatically produce surrender.
Leviticus 24 joins worship with justice. The lamps and bread were maintained before God, but the community also needed fair standards for both citizens and strangers.
Psalm 114 presents the presence of God as powerful and active. Seas, rivers, mountains, and rocks respond to Him. His presence moves what appears immovable.
These passages call disciples to examine whether worship is transforming business, family, leadership, finances, relationships, and treatment of vulnerable people.
Worship God in spirit and truth, examine inherited traditions, remove every substitute for obedience, treat workers and strangers justly, keep accurate records, repay what is owed, welcome appropriate accountability, reconcile broken relationships where possible, listen before defending yourself, and allow God’s presence to transform everyday decisions.
Avoid using prayer to delay repentance, donating publicly while withholding wages privately, honouring religious symbols while mistreating people, protecting family reputation above truth, confusing tradition with faithfulness, excluding people because of nationality or social position, forcing reconciliation without accountability, or assuming that sacred spaces guarantee a surrendered heart.
Identify one visible expression of your faith: a Bible, prayer corner, church role, ministry title, giving record, worship routine, family tradition, or public testimony.
Ask what practical obedience it should be producing. Examine your treatment of employees, customers, family members, migrants, neighbours, debtors, leaders, and people with less influence.
Review any unpaid wages, unresolved debts, unclear agreements, broken promises, or financial records requiring correction. Create a verifiable plan rather than offering another vague apology.
Identify one relationship in which religious language has replaced honest conversation. Seek wise mediation where necessary and begin by listening rather than proving your innocence.
Finally, open one previously closed area of your life to the Holy Spirit and pray:
“Lord, do not merely bless what I have built. Correct, move, and surrender everything that resists You.”
Most High God, forgive me for every time I have used worship, tradition, giving, ministry, or spiritual language to hide from obedience.
Show me what lies outside the curtain of my public faith. Reveal injustice, dishonesty, bitterness, pride, prejudice, unpaid obligations, and unresolved relationships.
Give me courage to correct records, repay what is owed, apologise without excuses, and seek reconciliation without controlling the outcome.
Let Your presence move the hardened places within me. May my home, work, finances, relationships, and private decisions agree with the worship I offer publicly.
I surrender not only my words and religious activities but my choices, possessions, reputation, and rights. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Father, we lift the Dominican Republic before You. Pour out Your Spirit across its provinces, cities, towns, rural communities, mountains, coastlands, farms, businesses, schools, churches, and families.
Bring spiritual awakening marked by repentance, holiness, reconciliation, compassion, justice, and multiplying disciples.
Strengthen families and heal relationships damaged by violence, abandonment, addiction, poverty, migration, pride, and unresolved conflict. Protect children and young people from exploitation, trafficking, abuse, hopelessness, and destructive influences.
Bless workers in agriculture, tourism, construction, transportation, education, healthcare, commerce, and informal employment. Give employers integrity and compassion. Let wages be paid fairly, agreements honoured, and workplaces made safe.
We pray for migrants and vulnerable communities. Remove prejudice, exploitation, fear, and dehumanising treatment. Give churches wisdom to uphold truth, justice, compassion, lawful order, and the dignity of every person.
Give national and local leaders integrity, wisdom, humility, and courage. Strengthen institutions responsible for justice, education, healthcare, housing, employment, public safety, and environmental stewardship.
Raise churches that refuse empty religion, welcome accountability, reconcile divided communities, and demonstrate the Gospel through truthful living.
May the Dominican Republic become a centre of worship, ethical leadership, compassion, and disciple-making throughout the Caribbean, the Americas, and the nations. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Lord, expose religious traditions throughout the Americas that preserve appearance while resisting obedience.
Transform churches, families, businesses, governments, and ministries. Let worship produce justice, integrity, reconciliation, compassion, and care for strangers.
Protect migrant workers, informal labourers, domestic workers, agricultural workers, and those whose lack of influence makes exploitation easier.
Raise disciples who honour healthy traditions while rejecting idolatry, hypocrisy, prejudice, corruption, and spiritual pride.
May God’s presence move hardened systems and release streams of renewal throughout the Americas. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Father, purify Your Church. Forgive us where sacred buildings, programmes, titles, doctrines, traditions, and platforms have become substitutes for obedience.
Bring hidden injustice into the light. Where workers have been mistreated, resources misused, complaints silenced, or vulnerable people excluded, bring repentance, restitution, reform, and healing.
Teach us to treasure biblical truth without resisting the Holy Spirit. Let every altar become a place of genuine surrender.
May the Church be known not only for what it professes but for how it treats people, handles money, resolves conflict, protects the vulnerable, and obeys Jesus. Amen.
Lord Jesus, raise disciple-makers who move people from religious familiarity into practical obedience.
Give them courage to ask difficult questions without becoming harsh or self-righteous. Help them confront hypocrisy beginning with their own lives.
Let DBS groups become places where Scripture enters business decisions, family relationships, finances, reconciliation, justice, and everyday service.
May disciples remove idols, open closed curtains, and surrender every area of life to Your lordship. Amen.
Lord of the harvest, remember people who possess religious tradition but have not encountered the transforming Gospel of Jesus.
Reveal Christ beyond rituals, fear, superstition, inherited identity, and empty observance. Provide Scripture in heart languages and raise local disciples who model truth, justice, compassion, and holiness.
Break the power of idols both visible and hidden. Let families, communities, and nations tremble joyfully before Your presence and receive the living water of salvation. Amen.
Today, I refuse to use religion as a hiding place from obedience. I will honour healthy traditions but will not allow them to replace repentance, justice, reconciliation, or surrender.
I will examine my treatment of workers, strangers, family members, customers, neighbours, and people with less influence. Where I have acted unjustly, I will confess, correct, repay, and reform.
I will not ask God merely to bless what I have built. I will allow Him to move, correct, and transform it.
🦅 I will see like an eagle.
🦁 I will lead like a lion.
✝️ I will serve like Christ.
By God’s grace, every altar in my life will become a place of genuine surrender and obedient mission.

Today, Stephen confronted people who honoured sacred history while resisting the Holy Spirit. True worship had to move beyond buildings, symbols, and traditions into justice, surrender, and obedience.
Tomorrow, Stephen’s hearers will become furious. As violence rises around him, he will look towards heaven, see the glory of God, and pray for those taking his life.
